8 Hy-Vee Bakery Buys Missouri Shoppers Grab Every Week

A once-a-year birthday cake isn’t the only reason shoppers head to Hy-Vee’s bakery case.

These are the Hy-Vee bakery products that bread and sweets-loving Missouri shoppers grab every week.

1. 10-Inch French Silk Pie

Missouri has been part of Hy-Vee’s story since the beginning, back when fifteen Iowa and Missouri stores incorporated together in 1938.

That was before the name Hy-Vee even existed.

That history still shows up in the bakery case, and the French Silk Pie is where many regulars start.

It comes topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate curls, and the everyday size runs six inches across, small enough that many shoppers grab it without a second look.

That’s not the full pie.

A ten-inch Gourmet version sits right behind it, sized for a Kansas City watch party or a Sunday table in Springfield instead of two people on a Tuesday.

Ask for it by size at the counter, or the six-inch pie lands in your cart instead.

2. Bread off the Artisan Line

Hy-Vee’s bakery case in Missouri isn’t only sandwich bread in a plastic sleeve.

A separate Artisan bread line comes out hearth-baked, with a crust the bagged loaves never get.

The lineup includes a French Boule, an Asiago cheese loaf, and a ciabatta, each baked directly on stone instead of in a pan.

The stone gives the crust its snap, the same way a pizza turns out crisper off a stone than out of a regular pan.

Missouri already has a piece of bread history worth knowing.

Sliced bread first rolled out of a bakery in Chillicothe, Missouri, on July 7, 1928, using a machine built by an Iowa jeweler named Otto Rohwedder.

Chillicothe still has a Hy-Vee.

Grab a loaf off the Artisan shelf instead of the bagged aisle, and it’s the closest thing Missouri’s bakery case has to that original crust.

3. Ten Cookie Flavors, Mixed in One Dozen

Hy-Vee bakes fresh cookies in ten named flavors, and many shoppers stick with chocolate chip without ever checking what else is in the case.

The full lineup runs chocolate chip, coconut pecan, homestyle brownie, M&M, monster, oatmeal chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, sugar, and snickerdoodle.

They’ll mix it for you.

Ask the bakery case to build a dozen across flavors instead of grabbing the pre-packed container, and the same box works for a house with different tastes at the table.

The case runs the same flavor lineup at every Missouri Hy-Vee on the store locator, whether that’s Kansas City, Springfield, Columbia, or Chillicothe.

It’s a five-minute ask that turns one flavor into a full variety box.

4. Cookie Cake, Not Sheet Cake

A full sheet cake takes planning, and Hy-Vee’s custom bakery cakes typically need at least a day’s notice.

A decorated cookie cake skips that wait at many stores.

The bakery case turns them around fast, in designs like Happy Birthday Neon Candles or a Build Your Own 12-inch round, without the full sheet-cake wait.

Order it and it’s ready fast.

It’s sized for an office party or a smaller birthday gathering, not a wedding-sized crowd, and it’s often ready as soon as the next day, well ahead of a full custom sheet cake.

Question 1 of 9

Before he won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams, quarterback Kurt Warner worked a night shift stocking shelves at a Hy-Vee. In which Iowa city?

5. Your Photo, Baked Into the Cake

Hy-Vee's bakery does more than write a name in frosting.

An Edible Image cake takes an actual photo, a team logo, or a favorite cartoon and prints it onto a sheet that goes right on top of the cake.

It's you, in frosting.

Order it through Aisles Online, pick the round or sheet size, and the image comes out clean enough to photograph before anyone cuts into it.

That beats a plain "Happy Birthday" scrawled in gel icing.

6. Free Tasting Before You Order

Hy-Vee's bakery offers a free cake tasting with a decorator, and many shoppers only ever hear about it from someone planning a wedding.

Free means free.

The same tasting and consultation works for a milestone birthday, an anniversary, or a graduation, not only a bride picking a flavor.

Sit down with a decorator, taste a few options, and settle on a flavor and filling before committing to a full order.

Call ahead to book the tasting, since a decorator's time fills up fast around graduation season and the holidays.

Nobody checks for a ring.

7. Gluten-Free Picks, Dietitian-Approved

Hy-Vee keeps a dietitian on staff at many of its stores, a service that goes back to the company's HealthMarket push in the early 2000s.

Ask before you order.

Hy-Vee's own store locator lets a Missouri shopper filter for a registered dietitian on staff before they even walk in, at stores from Kansas City and Columbia to Jefferson City and St. Joseph.

Its Good Graces brand covers gluten-free pasta, pizza dough, and granola, but the bakery case doesn't always spell out which items are safe for every allergy.

Dairy-free and nut-free requests come up just as often, and a dietitian is the person trained to sort out which bakery items fit a given restriction.

A store dietitian can walk the case with you and point out a substitution the label alone won't explain.

That's a resource sitting inside the store, free, and many shoppers never ask for it.

8. Custom Orders Placed a Day Ahead

Walking up to your Hy-Vee bakery counter and hoping for a good custom cake on the spot is a gamble.

Skip the counter.

Hy-Vee's Aisles Online lets shoppers pick a flavor, a frosting, and a written message from home, then schedule pickup once the order clears the bakery's notice window.

It beats standing at the case describing a design out loud while a line builds behind you.

A shopper in Blue Springs or St. Joseph can place the same order a shopper in Kansas City does, without ever picking up the phone.

The bakery case still runs on that 48-hour window for anything decorated, so the move is placing the order a few days before the party, not the morning of, and picking flavor and frosting from a phone while the coffee's still brewing.

Retire to Anchorage, and Alaska does something no other state bothers with.

It pays you a yearly dividend from the state's oil savings, and it never touches a pension, a 401(k) withdrawal, or a Social Security check either.
