Swap in name-brand groceries, though, and the answer flips hard: Walmart usually pulls ahead by a wider margin than Kroger ever gave back on store brands.

Which Items Drove Kroger’s Edge

Kroger’s own store brand, plus its premium Simple Truth line, did the heavy lifting in that July study.

Researchers found Kroger’s price beat Walmart’s on 10 of the 15 items compared, including canned diced tomatoes, a box of spaghetti, sugar, and a dozen large eggs.

That’s two out of every three products on the list.

The study, run by Restaurant Furniture Plus and picked up by outlets from Fox Business to Yahoo Finance, skipped Costco, Trader Joe’s, and other chains whose bulk sizing doesn’t compare item for item.

Fair enough.

On the store-brand staples that fill a normal cart, Kroger comes out ahead of Walmart by a slim margin.

Which Items Cost Less at Walmart

Name brands tell a different story than store brands.

A TheStreet price check run in July 2026 found Walmart selling a 24-pack of Coca-Cola for $9.97, while the same case cost $14.99 at Kroger.

Lay’s Classic potato chips followed the same pattern, $2.50 at Walmart against $3.99 at Kroger.

Ground beef stayed close, $5.94 a pound at Walmart versus $5.99 at Kroger, a gap of a nickel.

Mizuho retail analyst David Bellinger tied part of that gap to Walmart’s balance sheet, noting the company is funneling more than $2 billion in tariff refunds straight into store discounts this year.

Kroger has no matching refund.

Consumer Reports’s own February 2026 supermarket study found the same kind of spread nationally, with prices for a shared basket swinging more than 33% between the cheapest and priciest mainstream grocery chains in a given city.

Kroger and Walmart don’t sit at the extreme ends of that range.

Does Cincinnati Change the Answer

Barney Kroger opened his first grocery store on Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati in 1883, investing his life savings of $372.

The company never left.

Kroger’s headquarters still sits in Cincinnati, and the state carries more than 200 Kroger stores today, among the most of any state, behind only California and Texas.

Walmart runs 142 stores across Ohio, fewer locations than Kroger holds on its own home turf.

Neither company is coasting on that history, either.

Kroger is putting $129 million into its Cincinnati suburbs this year, a plan that covers three store conversions, in West Chester and Hamilton, Ohio, and across the river in Cold Spring, Kentucky, plus up to 15 additional remodels in the same market.

Walmart has its own remodel push underway across Ohio this year, with local reports counting anywhere from a handful of stores to more than a dozen depending on the region.

Kroger and Walmart are pouring money into the same neighborhoods this year.

More Kroger stores on the map don’t change the register total, though, since the July study priced its basket from national figures, not a single Ohio zip code.

Which Store Saves You More With a Membership

Both chains also sell a membership, and the sticker price favors Kroger again.

Kroger Boost Essential runs $69 a year, with free delivery on orders over $35, double fuel points, and a free six-month streaming subscription included.

Walmart+ costs $98 a year, a $29 gap.

That fee gets a member free delivery with no minimum order, fuel discounts worth up to 10 cents a gallon, and a free Paramount+ subscription.

Boost wins on sticker price.

Walmart+ erases the $35 order minimum Boost still enforces, so a member can get free delivery on a single can of soup if they want it.

Paying With SNAP at Either Store

Kroger also accepts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at checkout, membership or not, the same as Walmart does.

Federal rules keep it separate.

Neither a Boost nor a Walmart+ subscription touches SNAP dollars, since those benefits stay separate from paid delivery perks.

A shopper paying with SNAP still shops the same shelf prices covered above, store brand or name brand.
