There’s still no senior discount at Aldi in 2026, and the answer holds the same in Erie as it does in Bensalem.

Aldi sets every price centrally, so a store manager in Altoona can’t invent a Tuesday markdown for shoppers over 60 even if every regular asked for a discount.

Asking gets you nowhere.

AARP put the question to grocers directly for its 2026 roundup, and Aldi said only that it typically doesn’t offer discounts.

Aldi’s counterargument is the price on the sticker, and the company calls itself the lowest-priced national grocer based on its own annual price study.

Run the math, and Aldi’s position gets easier to follow: A 5 percent senior discount on a $120 grocery run saves $6, and the company’s argument is that a lower shelf price hands you that much with no sign-up at all.

The savings turn up in other places instead, and shoppers over 60 stroll past several Aldi perks every week without spotting them.

Why Aldi Says No

Every shopper who walks through the door pays the same price at Aldi.

Aldi guards that idea hard enough to turn down every coupon.

Manufacturer coupons don’t work at Aldi, in Pennsylvania or anywhere else.

Leave the coupon envelope home.

The store skips a pharmacy counter, a bank window, and check cashing on purpose, and Aldi says dropping those services is part of how it holds prices down.

Then there’s the quarter in the cart handle, the move that confuses many first-timers in the Wegmans crowd.

You get the quarter back when you walk the cart to the cart corral, and Aldi’s own explanation is blunt: The deposit means the company never has to pay anyone to round up carts in the parking lot.

None of that leaves room for a senior discount.

Aldi has even less reason to add a senior tier in 2026.

This is the chain’s 50th year in the United States, and it plans to open more than 180 new stores before the year ends.

Pennsylvania Stores With a Senior Day

Three chains with Pennsylvania stores give what Aldi won’t, and two of them picked Tuesday to do it.

Weis Markets, headquartered up in Sunbury along the Susquehanna, takes 10 percent off participating Weis brand items every Tuesday for shoppers 60 and older, according to AARP’s supermarket roundup.

You register once at the checkout by showing a valid ID.

Weis loads the discount onto your card after that.

Cheerios never qualifies.

Tops Markets, which runs stores across the northern tier, calls the first Tuesday of every month Young at Heart Day and gives shoppers 60 and older 6 percent off the grocery bill plus their out-of-pocket pharmacy purchases.

You enroll at the customer service desk or the pharmacy on a Young at Heart Day, and Tops adds the discount to your BonusPlus card from there.

Gas, gift cards, alcohol, tobacco, and online orders all sit outside the deal, and Tops leaves out anything Medicare or Medicaid pays for.

Albertsons, the company behind the Acme stores scattered around the Philadelphia suburbs, turns up on AARP’s list of supermarkets that do give a senior discount, with the caveat that it runs at select stores only.

The age and the amount both vary by location, and AARP tells shoppers to check with the store first.

Ask for the store manager.

Acme’s answer changes by ZIP code, which is why the call matters.

Chains With No Senior Day

Giant, Wegmans, ShopRite.

AARP reports that Giant keeps no company-wide senior day on the books, though a single store may still extend something to a regular who asks.

Wegmans and ShopRite never answered when AARP asked them about a senior policy.

Trader Joe’s, which runs stores from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, told AARP it skips senior discounts and promotions to keep everyday prices low for everybody.

A Rebate Worth $1,000

No grocery discount in Pennsylvania comes close to what the Department of Revenue mails out.

Pennsylvania's Property Tax/Rent Rebate program pays older homeowners and renters up to $1,000 a year, and the income limit now sits at $48,110 after a 2023 expansion tied the cap to inflation.

Homeowners and renters 65 and older qualify, along with widows and widowers 50 and older and people with disabilities 18 and older.

Half your Social Security counts.

The Department of Revenue counted about 511,000 rebates worth $314 million in the last full claim year, and roughly 165,000 of the filers since the expansion had never claimed a rebate before.

One date moved, which is the part most people miss: Applications for rent or property taxes paid in 2025 now run through December 31, not the old June 30 cutoff.

Filing costs nothing, and Revenue district offices, Area Agencies on Aging, and your state legislator's office all help with the form at no charge.

Prescription Help Through PACE

A grocery discount saves a few dollars a week, and Pennsylvania's prescription program can save a few hundred a month.

The Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE) and its higher-income tier, PACENET, cover medication costs for residents 65 and older, and Pennsylvania Lottery revenue funds both.

PACE takes a single person earning $14,500 or less, or a married couple bringing in $17,700 or less together.

PACENET picks up the next tier, from $14,501 to $33,500 for one person and from $17,701 to $41,500 for a couple.

That's a narrow window.

Both work alongside a Medicare Part D plan rather than replacing it, and eligibility runs off your gross income from the previous year.

A newer law protects the people already holding a card.

Gov. Josh Shapiro signed Act 49 on November 24, 2025, which extends a cost-of-living moratorium through the end of 2027 so a Social Security raise can't push more than 20,000 enrollees over the income limit.

The Department of Aging counts more than 250,000 older Pennsylvanians already carrying a PACE or PACENET card.

Free Rides to the Store

Getting to Aldi costs some Pennsylvanians nothing, which is a discount by any honest definition.

Anyone 65 or older rides free on participating fixed-route public transit, and that covers buses, trolleys, subway lines, and commuter rail.

You need a senior citizen transit identification card, and PennDOT says participating local transit operators hand it over free once you show a driver's license or another proof of age.

Ask your transit operator first.

SEPTA in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Regional Transit in Allegheny County each issue their own senior card.

Lottery money pays for the rides, and in 2024-25 that came to $168.7 million covering more than 25.8 million free trips.

Checks for Fresh Produce

August is the month this program pays off, since Pennsylvania hands older residents checks to spend on produce that never touches a grocery shelf.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program gives eligible residents 60 and older five checks worth $5 apiece.

Income has to land under $29,526 for a one-person household or $40,034 for two.

Fruits, vegetables, and edible herbs grown in Pennsylvania qualify, while jam, honey, cider, baked goods, and citrus don't.

Bring cash for the rest.

The Department of Agriculture keeps the list of growers cleared to take the checks, from the stands along Route 30 in Lancaster County to the Saturday markets in the Lehigh Valley.

Your County Aging office distributes the checks first come, first served.

Growers have to reapply for that clearance every season, so a stand that took the checks last August may not take them this year.

Call the farmers market before you drive out.
