12 Crazy Facts About Earth North Carolinians Never Learned in School
Your school probably covered plate tectonics and maybe a volcano diagram.
But few teachers gave North Carolina kids a fuller picture of what this planet is doing underground, underwater, and overhead.
These are the facts about Earth that never made it into any North Carolina classroom.
1. Earth’s Hidden Underground Ocean
North Carolina’s earth-science classes usually get as far as labeling Earth’s crust, mantle, and core on a worksheet, then move on to the next unit.
Nobody mentions that the mantle may hold nearly an ocean’s worth of water, locked inside a blue mineral called ringwoodite roughly 320 miles underground.
This isn’t a swimmable ocean.
The water sits chemically bound inside the mineral’s crystal structure, dragged down over millions of years as old seafloor slides into the mantle through plate tectonics.
How Ringwoodite’s Water Was Found
Ringwoodite’s hidden water surfaced by accident.
A diamond mined near Juina, Brazil trapped a microscopic grain of the mineral on its way up from Earth’s mantle transition zone, the layer running from about 254 to 410 miles beneath the surface.
That single grain is still the only confirmed sample of ringwoodite ever recovered from inside Earth, which is why no well or drill could ever bring the water up as a lake.
2. Earth’s Core Runs Sun-Hot
Iron staying liquid in Earth’s outer core is as far as North Carolina’s earth-science standards go. They never put a number on the heat driving it.
Here’s the number.
Earth’s inner core runs somewhere between 9,000 and 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to match the surface of the sun.
Not a rounding error.
Pure iron melts under 2,800 degrees at the surface, but the weight of the entire planet pressing down raises that melting point far higher, which is the only reason Earth’s core stays solid instead of turning to liquid.
3. Chimborazo Beats Everest to Space
North Carolina geography units file Mount Everest away as “tallest point on Earth” and stop right there, never mentioning there’s more than one way to measure a mountain against the planet.
Here’s the other way.
Ecuador’s Mount Chimborazo sits farther from Earth’s center than Mount Everest does, even though Everest stands taller by roughly 8,500 feet, or about a mile and a half.
Blame the bulge.
Earth isn’t a perfect sphere. Spinning stretches it wider at the equator, and Chimborazo sits almost exactly on that line, so its summit pushes about 6,800 feet farther from the planet’s center than Everest’s peak does.
Climbers on Chimborazo stand closer to the stars than anyone who has ever summited Everest.
4. Earth’s Waterfall Hides Underwater
The Denmark Strait, between Iceland and Greenland, holds Earth’s tallest waterfall completely out of sight.
No postcard has ever captured it.
North Carolina’s earth-science standards cover ocean currents in the abstract, as a diagram and a vocabulary word, and never mention this is where one of them ends up.
Never any mention of it.
Cold, dense water sinks off an undersea ridge there and drops 11,500 feet, more than three times the height of Angel Falls, moving well over 123 million cubic feet of water every second.
5. Point Nemo Sits Impossibly Alone
The Gulf Stream and the Outer Banks are as far as North Carolina’s ocean unit ever travels. Earth’s water goes a lot farther than that.
Not this far, though.
Earth’s most remote ocean point, called Point Nemo, sits about 1,670 miles from the nearest land in any direction.
Nobody’s out there.
When the International Space Station passes overhead, the astronauts aboard are often the closest human beings to that patch of water, closer than anyone standing on solid ground.
Nearly 300 retired spacecraft, including the old Mir space station, rest on the seafloor beneath it because space agencies use that empty patch of ocean as a graveyard for equipment that’s done its job.
6. Part of North Carolina Formed Thousands of Miles Away
North Carolina’s plate-tectonics lessons cover continents drifting apart across Earth’s surface and slamming back together, but nobody ever names the actual pieces that moved.
Here’s one that did.
A wide strip of North Carolina’s own Piedmont, what geologists call the Carolina terrane, started out as a chain of volcanic islands off the coast of Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent that once included South America and Africa, roughly 550 million years ago.
Nowhere near North America.
An ancient ocean called the Iapetus separated that island chain from the continent for tens of millions of years before plate movement finally dragged it into place and welded it onto Laurentia, the core of ancient North America.
Charlotte and a long stretch of North Carolina’s central Piedmont sit on rock that formed thousands of miles from where it rests today, long before there was a North Carolina to sit on it.

7. Lightning Strikes Nonstop Worldwide
Getting inside at the first rumble of thunder is standard advice in North Carolina schools, but nobody ever puts a number on how much lightning is striking Earth at any given moment.
Here's the number.
Lightning strikes somewhere on Earth roughly 40 times every second, day and night, all year long.
Nonstop.
Many of those flashes cluster over land in the tropics, where warm, moist air rises fast enough to build a thunderstorm on an almost daily schedule.
By the time you finish reading this sentence, lightning has already struck somewhere on the planet more than a hundred times.
8. Space Dust Falls Constantly
Comets and the occasional meteor shower are as far as North Carolina's solar-system unit goes, treating debris falling into Earth's atmosphere like a once-a-year event.
It's not once a year.
Earth picks up about 5,200 tons of space dust every year, drifting down from comets and asteroids passing through the solar system.
You've breathed some in.
Researchers traced it in Antarctica by melting clean snow and filtering out the microscopic grains left behind, particles small enough to settle without anyone ever noticing.
That dust rains down on every rooftop in North Carolina too, and nobody's ever swept a single flake of it off a porch.
9. Sahara Dust Feeds the Amazon
The Sahara, one of Earth's most famous deserts, is North Carolina geography class's go-to example of "hot and dry," and the lesson rarely goes any further than that.
It goes much further.
The Sahara sends roughly 28 million tons of dust across the Atlantic Ocean to settle over the Amazon rainforest every year.
Not something you'd expect.
Much of that dust starts in an ancient dried lakebed in Chad and carries phosphorus the Amazon's soil needs badly to keep growing.
Without that yearly delivery, the soil under the rainforest would slowly run short of one of the nutrients it depends on most.
10. Dinosaurs Lived Shorter Days
Naming which dinosaur lived in which era is where North Carolina's fossil unit usually stops, long before anyone gets to what a single Earth day was like back then.
It was shorter.
Earth's day lasted about 23.5 hours around 70 million years ago, back when dinosaurs still walked around.
A year ran 372 days.
Scientists worked that out by lasering through the growth rings of an ancient clam shell that added a new microscopic layer every single day of its life.
Earth's spin has been slowing down that whole time, stretched out bit by bit by the moon's steady pull.
11. Antarctica Is Earth's Biggest Desert
There's exactly one example North Carolina's earth-science classes use for Earth's deserts: Hot, dry, and sandy, usually illustrated with the Sahara.
That's not the whole definition.
Antarctica, not the Sahara, holds the title of Earth's biggest desert.
Ice counts as dry.
A desert is defined by rainfall, not temperature, and Antarctica averages under 2 inches of precipitation a year across its 5.4 million square miles.
The Sahara only wins on heat. Antarctica wins on space, ice included.
12. Earth's Boring Billion Years
The Precambrian gets a line on North Carolina's geologic time scale poster and nothing else, even though it covers most of Earth's history.
Here's why it's skipped.
Earth spent about a billion years, from roughly 1.8 billion to 800 million years ago, stuck in a stretch scientists nicknamed the boring billion.
Barely anything changed.
Oxygen levels stayed nearly flat, the climate held mild and steady, and complex life sat mostly still while the planet waited for conditions to shift.
Then, starting around 800 million years ago, oxygen levels began rising again and ice sheets crept all the way to the equator during a stretch geologists call Snowball Earth, the jolt that finally broke the billion-year stall.
