9 Things That Shut Down in a Colorado Mountain Town Between Seasons
Colorado’s mountain towns close for business between summer and ski season, and the shutdown starts earlier than many visitors expect.
These are the things that shut down in a Colorado mountain town between seasons.
1. Breckenridge’s Peak 8 Fun Park
Breckenridge’s Peak 8 Fun Park runs the Alpine Slide, the Gold Runner Coaster, and a 40-foot climbing wall all summer, and none of it survives past Labor Day.
Vail Resorts’ 2026 schedule keeps the BreckConnect Gondola and every ride at Peak 8 open daily only through September 7.
No autumn stretch.
Three of Breckenridge’s sister resorts squeeze a few more weekends out of late September, but Peak 8 just stops.
Downtown Breckenridge keeps its shops and restaurants running, but the mountain above town goes still at the same hour it does every Labor Day.
2. Steamboat’s Howler Alpine Slide
Steamboat Springs’ Howler Alpine Slide sits right on Howelsen Hill, a short walk from downtown, not off at a resort miles away.
The ride’s 2026 calendar states it’s closed for the season after September 20.
Gone.
The slide had already dropped to weekends-only by late August, so the crowds thin out well before the final closing date arrives.
Steamboat’s ski season isn’t projected to open until late November, which leaves Howelsen Hill’s summer track sitting empty for roughly two months.
3. Vail’s Tuesday Night Concerts
Vail’s Bulleit Hot Summer Nights concert series has filled the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater on free Tuesday nights for nearly 40 years.
The Vail Valley Foundation closed the 2026 season with its final free show on September 15, a Beatles tribute act built from the crowd’s requests.
Free every time.
Folding chairs and picnic blankets fill that lawn all summer, and by mid-September the amphitheater sits empty on the nights it used to draw a crowd.
Not Every Mountain Closes the Same Day
Vail Resorts owns Breckenridge, Keystone, Vail Mountain, Beaver Creek, and Crested Butte, and its 2026 summer schedule doesn’t treat them the same.
Breckenridge’s Peak 8 stops on Labor Day, while Vail Mountain, Beaver Creek, and Crested Butte squeeze out three more weekends before closing in late September.
Keystone splits the difference and shuts down in the middle of September.
A trip planned for the third week of September can hit a wide-open mountain in one town and a locked gate an hour away.
4. Keystone’s Gondola and Lake
Keystone Resort keeps its River Run Gondola and Keystone Lake paddleboards running longer than Breckenridge does, but not by much.
Vail Resorts’ 2026 schedule has Keystone open Thursday through Monday until Labor Day, then Friday through Sunday only, before it closes for good on September 20.
Then it’s done.
Keystone’s golf courses at The River Course and Keystone Ranch follow a separate calendar.
The lake and the gondola go still while a few holes stay open a while longer.
5. Breckenridge’s AirStage Concerts
Breckenridge runs a second summer program apart from the ski mountain, a free outdoor concert series called AirStage Summer Après.
Breck Create’s event page ran the Thursday shows through September 17, 2026, then nothing until next summer.
The Airstream stays parked.
Beer, crafts, and a band on a converted 1975 Airstream trailer filled Ridge Street Arts Square every week.
The lawn empties out two weeks before the calendar even reaches October.
6. Winter Park’s Trestle Bike Park
How much longer does Winter Park Resort’s Trestle Bike Park have this season?
The lift-hauled bike park runs daily through September 27, 2026, then goes dark until next summer.
That’s one weekend left.
Friday and Saturday hours run until 6:30 p.m., an hour and a half later than the rest of the week.
Trestle’s Twilight night-riding sessions, added for extra evening laps each summer, already ended on September 6.
7. Crested Butte’s Lift-Served Trails
By the time Labor Day passes, Crested Butte Mountain Resort’s lift-served mountain biking already runs on a shorter week.
The bike park operates daily through September 7, then Saturdays and Sundays only through September 27, when the whole summer program ends.
Weekdays go first.
Downtown Crested Butte’s Elk Avenue keeps its restaurants and bars open on weekday afternoons that used to be full of riders coming down off the mountain.
8. Vail Mountain’s Two Gondolas
But Vail Mountain’s two gondolas, Gondola One out of Vail Village and the Eagle Bahn Gondola from Lionshead, cut from daily service to Friday-through-Sunday hours on September 11.
That’s four idle weekdays.
Vail Mountain’s schedule ends the whole run on September 27, the gondolas’ last day before ski season.
Vail’s hiking trails above the village stay open on foot, but reaching the summit gets a lot harder once the gondolas stop turning midweek.

Crested Butte's bike shop and rental counter keep seven-day hours while the lift tickets that get riders up the mountain go to Saturdays and Sundays only.
