5 South Dakota Roadside Stops That Close Before Anyone Expects

South Dakota’s tourism office says the 61st annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup drew thousands of spectators on September 25.

Several roadside stops nearby had already shut down for the season.

These are the South Dakota roadside stops that close before anyone expects.

Storybook Island

Storybook Island closed its gates for the year on September 7, weeks before many fall travelers would think to check.

The free, nursery-rhyme-themed park in Rapid City had already trimmed its weekday hours down to four a day in mid-August, well before the gates locked for good.

There’s no goodbye tour.

Anyone planning a Black Hills trip around fall break usually assumes a park built for kids stays open as long as Mount Rushmore does, just a short drive away.

Storybook Island simply doesn’t wait around to correct them.

Mount Rushmore’s Different Clock

Mount Rushmore’s grounds close for exactly one day a year, on Christmas, according to the National Park Service.

Even then, the parking structure and grounds stay open, and only the buildings shut.

The smaller businesses that ring the memorial run on a shorter, summer-built clock instead.

Several call it quits the same week many families’ school year starts.

Broken Boot Gold Mine

Broken Boot Gold Mine finishes its walking tours for the season on Labor Day, which landed on September 7 this year.

Deadwood’s casinos don’t observe the holiday the same way.

The same highway that empties out at the mine keeps carrying gamblers into Deadwood well past dark.

The mine closes first.

A stop built around Deadwood’s gold rush history might seem like it would run as long as the town’s casinos do.

Broken Boot Gold Mine doesn’t share that logic, and its tour guides are gone for the winter well before the last blackjack table empties out downtown.

Black Hills Caverns

Black Hills Caverns wraps its cave tours for the season on September 21, according to the region’s tourism association’s 2026 closing-dates calendar.

That’s four days before the Buffalo Roundup, the single morning each fall when cowboys drive the park’s bison herd across the valley for pen-side branding and health checks.

The state’s Game, Fish and Parks Department says the event has drawn crowds as large as 20,000 people in past years.

By afternoon, they’ve scattered back onto the same highways the roadside stops sit on.

The cave beat them to the exit.

The official tourism guide puts the state’s best fall color between mid-September and mid-October, which means the caverns close while that window is still wide open.

Holy Terror Mini Golf

Holy Terror Mini Golf locks its putters away for the season on September 30, according to the course’s website.

Keystone, the small town built up around Mount Rushmore, keeps its restaurants and gift shops going well past that date.

The memorial next door keeps drawing visitors deep into fall.

The course stops well before the town does.

The National Park Service also wraps Mount Rushmore’s evening lighting ceremony around the same week.

The sculpture itself stays lit at dusk every night straight through the winter.

A visitor timing an October trip around the show could find one dark and the other still glowing.

Fort Hays Old West Town & Dinner Show

Fort Hays Old West Town & Dinner Show serves its last chuckwagon supper of the year on October 10, according to the same regional tourism calendar.

Fort Hays keeps its cowboy music show and chuckwagon suppers running many nights through early October, right up until the date arrives.

Then the season ends.

A family driving up from Rapid City for one last cowboy supper a week or two later will find the gates already locked.

Staff put the picnic tables away until spring.

October’s Late Closers

Not every roadside stop near Mount Rushmore packs it in early, and the contrast is exactly what catches visitors off guard.

It comes down to where each stop sits.

Big Thunder Gold Mine in Keystone runs its primary season from the second weekend in March through the end of October.

It also takes reservations for tours through the winter besides.

South Dakota’s Original 1880 Town, out along I-90 near Murdo, keeps its doors open from May 1 clear through October 31.

Rush Mountain Adventure Park, home to Rushmore Cave, runs May through October too, before it closes for the winter and reopens on spring weekends.

Three roadside stops with nearly identical October closing dates sit within an hour of five roadside stops that shut down weeks or even a full month earlier.

The Tourism Association's Closing List

The Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association publishes an official closing-dates calendar every year, and its existence says something on its own.

Enough visitors get caught off guard by an early closure that the region's tourism office maintains a running list just to keep the confusion down.

The list runs dozens of entries long, and the dates on it move earlier or later by a week or two many years, depending on staffing and weather.

The same tourism association publishes an opening-dates calendar every spring, timed to when those seasonal businesses reopen.
