6 Pennsylvania Foliage Drives That Aren’t Worth the Weekend Traffic
Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources tracks fall color county by county every autumn.
Its numbers put the northern tier at peak color between October 1 and October 10 most years.
That’s a tight window.
Everyone heads for the same handful of narrow mountain roads during it, so these are the Pennsylvania foliage drives that aren’t worth the weekend traffic.
1. Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe sits at the end of Route 903 through the Lehigh Gorge, a scenic drive that peaks with fall color every October.
The drive is the reward.
Three October festival weekends fill the borough’s downtown parking lot by mid-morning.
One especially bad Saturday from 2023 earned a nickname in local news coverage: “trafficgeddon.”
Police shut down stretches of town and rerouted traffic that day.
The following year, paramedics began staging an ambulance downtown during festival weekends, just to keep response times from disappearing into the gridlock.
This year’s festival runs three weekends: October 3-4, 10-11 and 17-18.
The region’s tourism board already calls those some of the busiest days Jim Thorpe sees all year.
2. Fallingwater
Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s house built over a waterfall, sits along the Route 381 foliage drive near Ohiopyle in the state’s southwest corner.
The site’s booking page tells visitors to plan 4-6 weeks ahead for its peak seasons: July, August, and October.
October means fall color.
Tours run in scheduled time slots, with multiple groups starting together.
The site’s visitor-information page tells guests to allow up to 20 minutes just to park and check in before a tour even begins.
3. Benezette
Benezette draws more elk-watching tourism every foliage season than anywhere else in the state, once the elk herd starts the rut.
Pennsylvania is home to roughly 1,400 elk, the largest free-roaming herd on the East Coast.
Traffic on Winslow Hill Road, the heart of the PA Elk Scenic Drive, can crawl for miles on a good October Saturday.
The Elk Country Visitor Center sees about 5,000 visitors a day during peak rut season.
Longtime residents describe the traffic near town as bumper-to-bumper on the worst weekends.
It’s not a scenic crawl.
The rut and peak color land in the same three or four weeks.
That overlap is exactly why the road fills twice as fast.
What Pennsylvania Calls “The Rut”
The rut is Pennsylvania’s name for elk mating season.
It runs roughly mid-September to mid-October every year.
Bulls bugle and spar for dominance during those weeks.
The display pulls elk out of the woods and into the open fields that sit right along the road.
That is the reason sightings and traffic spike on the same weekends.
4. Kinzua Bridge
Kinzua Bridge State Park sits along the Route 6 drive in McKean County.
The old railroad viaduct there once stood 301 feet above the valley floor and stretched more than 2,000 feet across it.
An F-1 tornado tore out eleven of its twenty towers in 2003, ending 121 years of service in under thirty seconds.
Nobody saw it coming.
Pennsylvania rebuilt what was left into a skywalk that hangs 225 feet over the gorge, with a glass floor at the center.
The skywalk’s renovation started in November 2024 and is on track to finish by fall 2027.
Until then, it reopens this September and October so crews can pause construction through peak leaf-viewing season.
DCNR’s guidance for the park says parking there fills quickly, especially on weekends.
Once the lot fills, DCNR says no more cars get in.

5. Ricketts Glen
Ricketts Glen State Park packs 22 named waterfalls into one hollow along Route 487, with the 94-foot Ganoga Falls as its centerpiece.
The Falls Trail loop is the reason many people make the drive.
The region's tourism authority admits the closest parking, at the Lake Rose trailhead, often fills early on peak fall weekends.
Only early birds win.
The park draws thousands of visitors a year, the same tourism authority says, especially on fall weekends.
Backup parking exists at Beach Lot 2 and the Evergreen Trail area, but neither sits close to the falls.
6. Bucktail Byway
The Bucktail Byway drive follows Route 120 for 100 miles between Lock Haven and Ridgway, tracing the West Branch Susquehanna River through the Sproul and Elk state forests.
Renovo sits at its center.
The town's Flaming Foliage Festival has been called the busiest day of the year for Renovo.
This year it lands October 9-11, right in the same window the rest of the byway usually peaks.
The region's guide to leaf-peeping admits its rural byways get a little more crowded than usual on weekends.
Its advice: Go midweek.
Tracking Fall Color
Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources runs a weekly fall foliage report every autumn, filed county by county.
A new one goes up every Thursday through peak season, with regional notes and photos alongside it.
The pattern repeats almost every year, and it always starts the same way: The color turns north first, then works its way south over the following weeks.
Northern counties, home to five of the six drives above, typically peak one to two weeks ahead of everywhere else in Pennsylvania.
Central counties follow about ten days later.
The gap adds up.
The southeast, including Philadelphia's suburbs, usually doesn't peak until the back half of October or later.
That is the collision in one sentence: The mountains that turn first also have the fewest roads to carry everyone at once.
8 Places That Won't Let a Pennsylvania Grandparent Sign for a Grandchild

A grandparent can spend an entire Pennsylvania afternoon driving a grandchild everywhere that matters and still hit a door that won't accept a signature that isn't a parent's.
Pennsylvania's 2018 guardianship law only covers part of that gap, and many grandparents never find out which doors it opens until they're standing at one.
