7 Secrets Harris Teeter Employees Wish North Carolina Shoppers Knew
Some of the best Harris Teeter savings don’t come with a sign over the aisle.
You just have to know where to look.
These are the secrets Harris Teeter employees wish North Carolina shoppers knew.
1. Skipping the Physical VIC Card
Harris Teeter’s Very Important Customer (VIC) card unlocks the sale prices printed in the weekly ad.
Many shoppers assume they need the plastic card in hand to get those prices.
They don’t.
Harris Teeter’s VIC benefits page says the card is free to join.
The chain’s VIC FAQ adds that a shopper can give the cashier a phone number instead of the card.
Give the cashier your number, and the VIC prices ring up the same as if you’d brought the card.
A lost or forgotten card costs shoppers nothing at the register.
Harris Teeter also automatically enters VIC members into store sweepstakes and offers 4x fuel points during select promotions, on top of the everyday sale prices.
2. Fuel Points’ Short Shelf Life
Harris Teeter’s Fuel Points program pays shoppers back in cents off a gallon, and it runs on a stricter clock than many people expect.
Every 100 points earned on groceries, gift cards, or prescriptions knocks 10 cents off a gallon at a Harris Teeter fuel center or a participating BP or Amoco gas station.
Filling a prescription counts toward points the same as filling a cart.
Harris Teeter’s fuel program page says points earned this month expire at the end of next month, whether a shopper spends them or not.
Points don’t roll over twice.
A shopper who racks up points all spring and forgets to fill up can watch a season’s worth of savings expire unused.
The Math on Harris Teeter’s Fuel Cap
Harris Teeter caps the fuel discount at 1,000 points redeemed at once, worth a full $1 off every gallon.
That discount applies to a maximum of 35 gallons per fill-up.
Hit both caps on the same trip, and the savings top out at $35 off one tank.
3. Double Refunds on Store Brands
Harris Teeter backs its store brands with two separate guarantees.
Buy an H.T. Traders or Harris Teeter Naturals item and dislike it, and the refund policy promises a full refund plus a free replacement of the same item.
That’s a refund and a replacement, not one or the other.
Harris Teeter backs select store-brand meat and seafood lines with an even bigger promise.
Rancher, Reserve Angus Beef, Farmers’ Market, Fisherman’s Market, and Fresh Foods Market items pay double the purchase price back.
That works with a receipt, or a VIC card that’s been active for more than 30 days and matches the shopper’s ID.
Either way, the refund policy covers purchases made within the past 60 days.
A bad steak still qualifies.
4. Doubled Coupons at the Register
Harris Teeter still doubles manufacturer coupons at the register.
Per the store’s coupon policy, any manufacturer coupon worth up to 99 cents doubles at checkout.
That caps out at $1.98 on one item.
Still, it adds up.
VIC cardholders can double up to 20 coupons a day per household.
Twenty doubled coupons in one trip changes the total fast.
Every coupon has to match the item’s exact size, variety, and flavor.
Splitting one order into several smaller ones to squeeze past the 20-coupon limit doesn’t work, either.
5. Digital Coupons Over Paper Coupons
Harris Teeter’s app lets shoppers clip digital coupons ahead of a trip, and the store’s rules decide which one wins when a shopper carries both kinds.
The coupon policy applies a digital coupon to the total automatically, ahead of any paper coupon.
A digital coupon and a paper coupon can’t stack on the same item, either.
Only one applies.
Harris Teeter’s policy redeems whichever coupon is the better value.
A bigger paper coupon only counts if the shopper hands it over.
Digital coupons also never double the way paper coupons can.
6. One Competitor Coupon a Day
Harris Teeter takes a rival grocer’s coupon, within limits.
A money-off-your-order coupon from a competitor’s circular or direct-mail flyer works at Harris Teeter’s register, capped at one per customer per day.
That coupon won’t double the way a manufacturer coupon can.
It counts at face value.
The policy draws a hard line at internet coupons from other retailers, though.
Harris Teeter doesn’t accept any of them, so a coupon from a rival’s app or website won’t work.
7. ExpressLane’s Fee Workaround
Harris Teeter charges a service fee on ExpressLane pickup orders, and the fee has a threshold worth planning around.
An order between $25 and $49.99 carries a $4.95 fee.
Between $50 and $99.99, the fee drops to $2.95.
Push the same order past $100, and Harris Teeter waives the fee.
One extra item does it.
Harris Teeter also sells an annual ExpressLane membership, which its membership FAQ prices at $99 a year.
That FAQ lists free delivery on orders of $35 or more and 2X fuel points on groceries.
The membership runs for 365 days.
It doesn’t renew automatically.

A New Store for Kannapolis
Harris Teeter's $253 million investment covers renovations at existing stores plus a handful of brand-new ones.
Kannapolis is one of three communities getting a Harris Teeter built from scratch, alongside Fort Mill and Lake Wylie in South Carolina.
No opening dates were announced.
The Kannapolis and Clemson stores are each planned at about 53,000 square feet, smaller than the roughly 61,000-square-foot locations planned for Jacksonville, Florida, Fort Mill, and Lake Wylie.
Harris Teeter expects each new store to bring 100 to 200 retail jobs to its community.
Grand reopenings for the renovated stores begin this fall, according to Harris Teeter's announcement, with the new Kannapolis store following once construction wraps.
It will be Harris Teeter's only store in Kannapolis once the doors open.
