7 Food City Secrets Virginia Employees Wish Shoppers Knew
Does a BOGO tag at Food City mean you have to buy two?
It’s one of several things shoppers miss at the register that employees notice.
These are the Food City secrets Virginia employees wish shoppers knew.
1. Single-Item BOGO Rule
Food City writes its BOGO and Fuel Bucks rules once, from that Abingdon office.
Every store runs the same version, whether it’s one of the 28 in southwest Virginia or one three states over in Alabama.
One of the least-understood rules at the register involves a BOGO tag.
Do you need two items to cash in on it?
One will do.
Food City’s FAQ page states that BOGOs are sold at half price if a single item is purchased.
A $6 BOGO item checks out at $3 even when only one makes it into the cart.
Nobody has to grab a second item.
Psst! How many of these Food City money habits do you already use? Check them off and see where you land.
2. Wednesday Fuel Discount
Food City’s Fuel Bucks program pays two different rates at the pump, and the richer one only shows up one day a week.
Not every day.
Every dollar a shopper spends with a ValuCard earns one Fuel Buck toward either rate.
Earn 150 Fuel Bucks and Food City knocks 15 cents off every gallon, any day, up to 20 gallons.
Stack up 300 Fuel Bucks and that discount doubles to 30 cents a gallon, but only on Wednesdays.
Every other day, those same 300 Fuel Bucks still cap out at the everyday 15-cent rate.
The Math Behind Food City’s Wednesday Rate
A 20-gallon fill-up at Food City on a Wednesday with 300 Fuel Bucks saves $6, since the pump takes 30 cents off every gallon up to that cap.
The same 300 Fuel Bucks spent on a Tuesday only saves $3 because the extra 150 Fuel Bucks buys nothing beyond the everyday rate until Wednesday comes back around.
3. Fuel Bucks Without a Pump
Stores without a Gas ‘N Go still hand out Fuel Bucks from Food City, just in a different form.
300 Fuel Bucks there converts into 5% off a grocery order instead of cents at a pump, capped at $100 in savings on one trip.
Nothing about a pump matters.
A shopper who never checks the balance leaves grocery money on the table.
The same ValuCard earns the pump discount at one Food City and the grocery discount at another, depending only on which store rings up the visit.
4. 250-Coupon Ceiling
A single ValuCard account can only hold so many digital coupons at Food City.
The ceiling sits at 250 coupons.
A fully loaded account also can’t stack a digital coupon on top of a paper one for the same item.
Pick one or the other.
A cashier watching two coupons meet on the belt for the same box of cereal only rings up one of them.
5. 15-Day Rain Check
Food City backs its rain checks with an actual window, not just a promise to restock eventually.
The window runs fifteen days.
When a marked-down sale item runs out before a shopper gets there, Food City writes a rain check good for about fifteen days.
The store renews it if the shelf still hasn’t restocked by the time it expires.
6. Store-Brand Guarantee
Every one of Food City’s store brands carries a guarantee many national brands skip.
That covers the whole shelf.
Food Club, TopCare, Simply Done, and Full Circle Market items all fall under the same promise.
Bring back the unused portion, and the store replaces it or refunds the money.
Many shoppers assume a store brand carries no such backup.
7. Custom-Cake Clock
A Food City bakery order moves on one of two different clocks, depending on what a shopper orders.
A standard birthday cake needs 24 hours’ notice.
A custom Celebrations cake, built around one occasion, needs up to five days.
Five days, not one.
A shopper who calls the morning of a party for anything beyond the standard cake is asking the bakery to beat its posted timeline.
School Bucks
Food City turns ordinary grocery runs into cash for local schools through a program called School Bucks.
No extra cost.
A shopper links a ValuCard to one participating school, and every dollar spent earns that school one point toward an $800,000 pool Food City splits every year.
Linking the card to a school doesn’t cut into the Fuel Bucks the same card earns at checkout.
Fuel, gift cards, alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, and Western Union transactions don’t count toward the total.
A family that already shops there every week is a few clicks away from turning that habit into new equipment for a classroom down the road.
