5 Publix Catering Rules Floridians Learn the Week Before a Party

Planning a party is stressful enough without a surprise at the deli counter.

Floridians who order from Publix can save themselves a scramble by knowing a few rules ahead of time.

Here are the Publix catering rules to know the week before your party.

1. 24-Hour Notice

Some Publix orders, including platters and cakes, need a notice of 24 hours or more.

The pickup FAQ also tells you to check the item description before you order, since the notice can run longer.

A platter pickup at 1 p.m. Saturday means placing the order by 1 p.m. Friday, and earlier if the item description asks for more.

The order-ahead page lists subs, wraps and sliced deli meats and cheeses as same-day items.

So your platters need the early order, while subs, wraps and sliced deli items can wait until closer to the party.

2. Noon Order Cutoff

Does the hour you order matter at Publix?

For some platters, it does.

Publix says you can pick up some platters at any time the next day when you order them before noon.

If you order one of those platters after noon, the earliest pickup is after noon the following day.

If you want one of those platters on Friday morning, an order before noon Thursday fits the rule, while a 1 p.m. Thursday order waits until Friday afternoon.

3. Two Cancellation Windows

Publix’s pickup FAQ sets two cancellation windows, depending on what you ordered.

You can cancel platters and cakes up to 24 hours before your scheduled pickup time.

Subs get a tighter window, and you can cancel a sub order while pickup is more than 2 hours away.

On a 1 p.m. Saturday platter pickup, that means canceling by 1 p.m. Friday, while an 11 a.m. sub pickup needs a cancellation before 9 a.m.

Online cancellation is available for select stores and time frames, and your Purchase History shows whether you can cancel an order online.

If you’d rather change an order than cancel it, changes are always welcome even after you submit.

You make them by calling the store at the number in your order summary or email confirmation.

4. Special Instruction Charges

Special instructions at Publix work on select items, and the app FAQ says those include some platters, subs and cakes.

Some special instructions may result in additional charges in-store, so a special request on a party platter could change your total at pickup.

If a special request matters to your party, leave a little room in your budget for pickup day.

5. Payment Options

Publix gives you two payment options for a pickup order, and the app FAQ labels them “Pay now” and “Pay in-store.”

The pricing FAQ says not all items are eligible for online payment.

If any item in your basket is ineligible, you pay for the entire order in the store.

On a big party order, if any item is ineligible for online payment, you pay for the whole order at the register.

Publix charges your payment method when you submit an order, and changing it after you place the order means canceling and resubmitting.

For a platter order, you’d want to make that switch while you can still cancel, which is up to 24 hours before pickup.

Platter Serving Sizes

Party platters at Publix come in four sizes, and the deli platter page ties each one to a guest count.

A mini platter serves about 5 guests, a small about 10, a medium about 18 and a large about 28.

Every count comes with the word “about,” so start with your guest list and treat each count as a planning estimate.

The order-ahead page lists fruit, vegetable, sandwich, meat and dessert platters.

Publix Platter Math for a Crowd

If you pair a large Publix platter with a medium one, the counts add up to about 46 guests.

Two medium platters come to 36 guests on the same counts, so a party of 40 lands four guests short.

A party of 60 needs more than two large platters, which come to 56, and adding a mini platter brings the total to about 61.

Chilled Fried Chicken

According to its platters FAQ, Publix serves platters that contain fried chicken, such as tenders and wings, chilled.

Publix offers chicken tender, chicken wing and popcorn chicken platters.

Hot tenders or wings at your party mean leaving yourself time to warm them before your guests arrive.

Sub Orders for a Crowd

The average wait for one item on a Publix sub order is about 25 minutes, according to the subs FAQ.

Wait time may increase as your order size does, and busier times may run longer than expected.

Publix’s sandwich platters let you customize a selection of subs, sliders, wraps and pinwheels with your choice of meats and cheeses.

For a crowd, we’d order that platter a day ahead instead of stacking same-day subs.

Building Your Order Early

Your Publix pickup order stays in your cart for 30 days when you’re logged in to your Club Publix account, according to the pickup FAQ.

If you aren’t logged in, the order stays in your cart for 24 hours on the same device.

Your order also stays in your Purchase History for three months, so you can reorder it.

If you’re logged in, a 30-day cart leaves you room to start a party order a week ahead instead of the night before.

Full-Service Catering

The deli platter page says Publix also offers full-service catering at select locations.

Publix's catering page sits in its wedding section, but it says the consultants help plan events of any size.

They build a menu that runs from entrees and sides to platters and desserts, and you get help planning your event for free.

Grocery Dive reported in August 2023 that Publix would discontinue the full-service catering that included delivery service and set-up.

The platter page and the 2023 report don't line up neatly, so ask before you count on delivery or setup.
