9 Grocery Items That Shrank, and North Carolina Shoppers Are Upset
You reach for the same box you always buy.
It looks about the same, and the price tag might too.
But there can be less inside, and your grocery bill doesn’t shrink with it.
Here’s a look at everyday staples that now hold less than they used to for North Carolinians.
1. Great Value Ground Coffee
Great Value ground coffee has shrunk from an 11.3-ounce can to a 9.6-ounce can, according to Mouse Print’s June 2026 roundup.
That’s a drop of about 15%.
Mouse Print estimates the loss at about five cups of coffee.
Walmart’s listing for Great Value Classic Roast shows a 9.6-ounce canister, which matches the smaller size.
At 9.6 ounces, a can weighs 60% of a pound, down from about 71%.
If you buy that can again, you’re getting 1.7 ounces less each time.
2. Hungry Jack Syrup
Hungry Jack syrup now gives you 3.6 fewer ounces in a large bottle than it used to.
Mouse Print’s January 2026 report says Hungry Jack cut its large bottles from 27.6 ounces to 24 ounces.
That’s a 13% drop.
3. Thomas’ Bagels
Mouse Print’s June 2026 roundup shows Thomas’ bagels at 18 ounces in a six-pack, down from 20 ounces.
That works out to a 10% cut since the 20-ounce six-pack.
Mouse Print says factory-made bagels once weighed 24 ounces in a six-pack, then 22 ounces, then 20 ounces.
It also notes the smaller Thomas’ package comes with 30 fewer calories.
If you eat a Thomas’ bagel for breakfast, you’re getting about 3 ounces, down from roughly 3.3.
4. Kellogg’s Corn Pops
Kellogg’s Corn Pops fell from 18.1 ounces to 16.4 ounces a box, according to Mouse Print.
Mouse Print puts that at about two fewer cups of cereal per box, or roughly 9% less by weight.
The cereal maker’s Corn Pops page lists a 16.4-ounce size.
Mouse Print says the new box is narrower.
If you scan the aisle for the box you know, it looks about the same size head-on.
Many shoppers probably wouldn’t catch that from the shelf.
5. Premier Protein Cereal
If you buy Premier Protein cereal from Post, your box now has 9 ounces instead of 11, according to Mouse Print’s January 2026 report.
That’s an 18% cut.

6. Oscar Mayer Beef Franks
Oscar Mayer lists its classic beef franks as a 15-ounce, 10-count pack on its product page.
Mouse Print's June 2026 roundup says Oscar Mayer's beef franks used to weigh a pound.
The drop is one ounce, or about 6% of the old pound.
Divide 15 ounces by 10 franks, and you get 1.5 ounces a frank.
If you're feeding a crowd, you'd need 16 of the new packs to match the weight of 15 of the old pound packs.
7. Krusteaz Pancake Mix
Mouse Print's January 2026 report says Krusteaz pancake mix was downsized by over 20% without any reduction in price, a change one of its contributors spotted.
That means you aren't paying any less for more than a fifth less mix.
8. Hershey's Dark Chocolate Assortment
Hershey's dark chocolate assortment went from 29 ounces to 23.9 ounces in its party size bag, according to Mouse Print's June 2026 roundup, which credits a retail store worker with spotting it.
Mouse Print says both bags were priced at $19.99.
That's 5.1 ounces less candy.
If you buy it for company, you get less for the same $19.99.
Hershey's Dark Chocolate by the Ounce
Hershey's dark chocolate party bag shrank at the same $19.99 price at both weights, according to Mouse Print, so each ounce of candy costs more.
Divide the price by the ounces on the label, and at 29 ounces, $19.99 works out to about 69 cents an ounce.
At 23.9 ounces, the same $19.99 works out to about 84 cents an ounce.
That's roughly 21% more for every ounce you bring home.
9. Atkins Protein Bars
Atkins protein bars went from a five-pack to a four-pack, according to Mouse Print's January 2026 report.
The report covers products that were downsized over roughly the previous six months.
One bar is a fifth of five, so that is a 20% cut in count.
If you keep a box of Atkins bars at your desk, you now get four bars where you used to get five.
What the GAO Found
Shrinking grocery items show up in federal data too, in a July 2025 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).
GAO looked at seven product categories, including cereal and coffee.
In 2021 to 2023 data, it found that less than 5% of the items it checked were downsized.
That sounds small.
But in cereal over those years, 1.1% of items were downsized, and those items made up 8.6% of sales.
So you can run into a smaller box in your cart more often than the item count suggests.
Popularity and Downsizing
GAO found that popular grocery items were more likely to be downsized within a product category.
On average, the price of each unit in downsized products rose between 12% and 32%.
Coffee topped the range.
Studies GAO reviewed found that shoppers react less to a smaller package than to a higher price.
If you buy one of the most popular items in its category, GAO found those items were more likely to be downsized.
Size Cuts Over Time
Downsizing of everyday products peaked in 2015, according to GAO.
It fell to its lowest point in 2020 and 2021, during the first two years of the pandemic.
Then the trend reversed.
Reports of downsized items rose again starting in early 2022, as inflation rose.
