6 Giant Eagle Secrets Employees Wish Ohioans Knew

Giant Eagle has a few rules that can change your total in ways you might not expect.

Ohioans who shop there can take advantage of more savings by knowing the fine print.

Here are the Giant Eagle details employees wish you knew before checkout.

1. Curbside Card Holds

Giant Eagle’s Curbside Pickup & Delivery checkout may place a temporary hold on your card for the order total plus a 15% buffer.

That buffer covers item weights, sales, cancellations, and substitutions.

By that math, a $100 order could mean a $115 hold on your card.

Giant Eagle charges your card after it finishes shopping your order and confirms any out-of-stock items with you.

You’re charged only for the actual value of items you receive.

How fast the extra money frees up depends on your bank, and card reversals can take up to 10 business days.

2. Ad Prices at Pickup

Weekly ad prices may not show on Giant Eagle’s website when you build a Curbside order days ahead, according to the FAQ.

You’re charged the prices and promotions in effect at pickup or delivery, so your final total reflects the current weekly ad.

Digital coupons work on Curbside orders, but paper coupons currently don’t.

3. Coupons Before Rewards

At Giant Eagle, coupons come off your order before the chain figures a percent-off reward, according to the myPerks terms, last updated April 2, 2026.

That reward caps at 20% off your groceries.

At that cap, a $100 order with $10 in coupons saves $18, not $20.

Spend-based bonus perks use your total before taxes and after coupons and Loyalty Card savings.

In the example, spending $25 in Meat and Seafood earns 200 bonus perks, so a $26 cart that drops to $22 after coupons would miss it.

How Giant Eagle Rewards Change What You Earn

According to Giant Eagle’s myPerks terms, a percent-off grocery reward earns no perks on that redemption transaction.

A dollars-off reward is treated differently, since you still earn perks on the items you buy.

In the example, $10 in dollars-off rewards on a $100 order means you earn perks on the $90, less any applicable taxes, deposits, and fees.

4. Delivery App Orders

Orders placed through Instacart, DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Shipt get different treatment under Giant Eagle’s myPerks terms than orders placed in the Giant Eagle app or on its website.

Link your delivery account to myPerks, and you’ll earn 1 perk per $1 spent on eligible Giant Eagle and Market District orders.

That rate is the same for Members and Pros.

Perks earned that way can’t be redeemed on those platforms, since redemptions are limited to in-store or Giant Eagle’s digital platforms.

Those orders also aren’t eligible for in-store promotions, in-store pricing, digital coupons, or Giant Eagle-only offers.

Say you earn myPerks in March and never use them. When do they expire?

5. Digital Coupon Limits

Digital coupons at Giant Eagle have no set expiration date, the FAQ says.

Instead, a coupon stays available until it reaches a maximum number of redemptions, and then it drops out of the gallery.

Coupons close to that limit carry an "Expiring Soon" label.

Once you activate a digital coupon, you can't deactivate it, so clip only what you'll buy.

Giant Eagle still sends printed coupons through direct mail and Catalina printouts at checkout.

Those offers are separate from digital coupons, and not all customers may receive them.

6. First-Item-Free Rule

At Giant Eagle and Market District stores, the price accuracy policy makes the first improperly scanned item free when your receipt shows more than the displayed, posted, or advertised price.

Any additional items of the same product in your transaction ring up at the lower price.

It also lets Giant Eagle limit the free item to one when your order includes several varieties.

The free item tops out at $25, and anything priced above that gets $25 off the lower displayed price.

GetGo works differently, since its policy rings up every improperly scanned item at the lower price.

Items the law prohibits it from covering, including alcohol and tobacco, are excluded.

Store-Brand Perk Changes

At Giant Eagle, you can no longer earn 2x perks, or 3x as a Pro, on every store-brand purchase as of February 15, 2026, according to the myPerks terms.

Store-brand means select Giant Eagle, Market District, and Nature's Basket labeled items, along with a few others.

You can still earn up to 10x perks on a rotating selection of those items every week.

Deli, produce, meat, seafood, prepared foods, and bakery departments are left out of the store-brand discount.

Purchases That Skip Perks

Giant Eagle's myPerks terms say Amazon.com gift cards you buy earn one-half of a perk for each $1 spent, and exclude them from bonus perk offers.

Postage stamps, money orders, and delivery charges are also among purchases that earn you no perks.

Returns Without a Receipt

Giant Eagle's returns policy offers a cash refund on items under $5.

Above $5, a register receipt or the loyalty card you used for the purchase is required.

Your refund then goes back in the same form as your payment.

Without a receipt or that card, you're offered a Giant Eagle gift card for purchases over $5, and customer ID may be required.

For purchases over $25, store management decides whether to offer that gift card.
