7 Harris Teeter Secrets Employees Wish Virginians Knew
Even a store you know well can have rules you’ve never run into.
Virginians who shop at Harris Teeter may be missing details that change what they pay and how smoothly their trip goes.
These are the store rules Harris Teeter employees wish shoppers understood.
1. Your e-VIC Home Store
Harris Teeter’s e-VIC weekly special email, sent to Very Important Customer (VIC) card members, bases sale prices on your home store.
The store you picked at sign-up decides what you see.
If you’ve moved or switched stores, a link in the email lets you change it.
Check your home store once.
Those emails also carry e-VIC-only discounts that come off automatically at the register, with no coupons to clip.
The coupon policy leaves e-VIC promotions out of its scan guarantee, which gives you one item free when an item scans above its shelf tag.
When Harris Teeter’s e-VIC Sign-Up Fails
Harris Teeter’s e-VIC FAQ lists three reasons the sign-up can reject you.
Your name may no longer match the one you gave when you first got your VIC card.
A misspelling in your registration or in Harris Teeter’s records can block it too.
A brand-new VIC card can fail as well, since e-VIC runs on shopping history.
You’ll see an error message, and Harris Teeter’s Customer Relations team can help at 1-800-432-6111, option 2.
2. Rain Check Limits
Harris Teeter writes a rain check for an out-of-stock item during a coupon promotion or event, and the check covers the sale price only.
Each rain check has a limit of three items or three deals, unless the ad says otherwise.
Redeem fewer than that, and the store won’t reissue a rain check for the rest.
Use all three.
For deals where the price varies, you pay the higher amount.
You also can’t combine a rain check with an item’s current sale price.
Orders you place through third-party delivery sites such as Instacart or DoorDash don’t qualify for rain checks either.
3. Pickup Substitutions
If you order Harris Teeter groceries for pickup, the pickup FAQ says you can refuse any substitution before an associate loads your order into your car.
Your associate reviews each swap with you when the order comes out.
Speak up then.
If you keep a substitute and change your mind at home, you can return it to a store at any time for a full refund.
You can also tell Harris Teeter at checkout whether to allow substitutions at all.
4. Delivery Through Instacart
Paper coupons don’t work on a Harris Teeter delivery order, but digital coupons do, the delivery FAQ says.
Only digital counts.
Third-party services such as Instacart fulfill those orders.
Clip your digital coupons before you check out, and the discount shows up at delivery or as a payment adjustment within 48 hours.

5. Recall Alerts
Harris Teeter's recall page says VIC card members can hear about recalls by email or phone, not only by visiting the page.
To get Class I recall notices that way, you have to add your VIC card number to your profile.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines a Class I recall as one where a product has a reasonable probability of causing serious health consequences or death.
Add your VIC number once.
Past recalls are listed by date, and the entries include store-made items such as sushi in May 2025.
6. Mobile Pay Limits
Harris Teeter's Mobile Pay FAQ says the app creates a one-time code you scan, and one scan sends your payment and loyalty information together.
Mobile Pay works at attendant lanes, self-checkout and the in-store pharmacy checkout at participating stores.
Check your store first.
Harris Teeter Fuel Centers and pharmacy drive-thru lanes don't take Mobile Pay.
Mobile Pay doesn't give cash back right now.
The best results come from scanning the code at the start of the transaction, the way you would with your VIC card.
7. Excluded Coupons
Percent-off coupons, whether they cover one item or your whole order, don't work at Harris Teeter, the coupon policy says.
Leave percent-off coupons at home.
Digital coupons also don't apply to closeout items, to items on sale as a manager's special, or to coupons worth more than the item's price.
Competitor coupons depend on the store because each store's management team decides who counts as a competitor.
For paper coupons, Harris Teeter adjusts anything worth more than your item down to the item's price, with no cash back.
Order Ahead Subs
Sub and deli orders at Harris Teeter can be ready in as little as 15 minutes, according to the Order Ahead FAQ.
They're same-day orders.
Party platters and cakes work differently, since they need at least 24 hours of notice.
You can order online or in the store, or call 1-800-432-6111 and ask to be transferred to your local store.
Payment happens at the store, since there's no online payment option right now.
Canceling goes through the store too because there's no online option.
Ask your store which options it offers because not every store offers every option.
Special Order Requests
Harris Teeter's products FAQ says you can request an item the store doesn't carry by filling out a form in the store.
The store introduces about 20,000 new items each year and moves products around to make room for them.
If you can't find your favorite, just ask, and an associate will walk you there or hand you a store directory.
Some favorites disappear for good.
It comes down to supply and demand, since the store replaces slow sellers and suppliers sometimes retire products.
