8 Schnucks Checkout Rules Missourians Should Know Before Their Next Trip
You know where everything is in your Schnucks.
The rules at the register are sometimes another story.
Some come straight from the store, and others come from Missouri’s state agencies.
These are the Schnucks checkout rules Missourians should know before their next trip.
Note: This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Store policies, state rules and tax rates are subject to change.
1. Coupon Limits
Schnucks takes one coupon per item in each transaction, and its digital coupons can’t be doubled.
If you present a printed coupon and a clipped digital coupon for the same item, Schnucks honors the digital one and returns the printed coupon to you.
Schnucks reduces a coupon worth more than the item to the item’s price, with no refund for the difference.
Home-printed internet coupons for free products, or worth more than $5, work only when Schnucks issued them.
On a buy-one-get-one-free item, your coupon goes on the item you buy, and an additional coupon can’t go on the free one because it’s already free.
You can redeem as many coupons as you like at face value, as long as each item gets one.
Schnucks also reserves the right to limit identical coupons to three at any time.
2. Self-Checkout Item Limit
Schnucks has raised its self-checkout limit from 10 items to 15.
The limit began on February 1, 2024, when Schnucks said it was meant to improve efficiency and reduce theft.
Schnucks didn’t announce the increase on its website, but signs around the self-checkout areas posted the new limit.
3. Rewards Points
At a Schnucks register, you earn Rewards Points by scanning the barcode in the Rewards app or giving the cashier your phone number.
Points have to be earned and redeemed at the point of sale, not at a later date.
Only one Rewards membership earns Points on any one transaction.
You redeem Points in 500-Point steps, and each step takes $1.00 off your purchase.
Redemption applies only to what’s left after Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits and coupons have been applied.
Alcohol earns Points, but Points can’t be redeemed on it.
Third-party gift cards, lottery purchases, money orders and wire transfers neither earn nor redeem Points.
4. Gift Card Payments
A Schnucks gift card works at any Schnucks location, but it can’t be cashed in and no cash back is given.
When you pay with the card, you don’t earn Rewards Points on the purchase.
You also can’t use Points to buy a Schnucks gift card.
Buying a Schnucks gift card is different, since Points can be earned on that purchase.

5. Alcohol Hours
When you buy alcohol at Schnucks, Missouri's normal hours for licensees run from 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., Monday through Saturday.
Most licensees must follow those hours.
If you shop on a Sunday, the hours are the same.
The state's license page for grocery stores and other package retailers says a store needs a Sunday license to operate that day.
6. Age Checks for Alcohol
At the Schnucks register, Missouri law bars anyone under 21 from buying or possessing alcohol.
Your ID has to be a valid, unexpired driver's or chauffeur's license from Missouri or another state or territory, or a Missouri ID card.
You can also show a U.S. uniformed service ID or a valid passport.
The state also bars anyone under 21 from selling or helping sell liquor unless Missouri law authorizes it.
7. Healthy SNAP Changes
If you pay with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Missouri's Healthy SNAP limits are set to reach your Schnucks register on February 15, 2027.
The plan blocks SNAP benefits from buying candy, prepared desserts, soda and beverage mixes, according to a public radio report.
Until then, your SNAP benefits still follow the standard list from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which includes snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages.
Why the Healthy SNAP Date Moved
Schnucks shoppers who use SNAP will see Healthy SNAP start later than the Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) first planned, which was October 2026.
DSS announced the February 15, 2027 date on June 5, 2026, and USDA approved the change on June 15, 2026.
A federal judge ruled in June 2026 that USDA lacked the authority to approve similar waivers in five other states, but Missouri's wasn't part of that ruling.
DSS said afterward that it was keeping February 15, 2027.
8. Grocery Sales Tax
Your Schnucks receipt taxes qualifying food at Missouri's reduced state rate of 1.225%, down from 4.225%.
Local sales taxes still apply on top of that.
The reduced rate covers food items that food stamps can buy, so you'll see nonfood items ring up at the regular rate.
Warm donuts from a grocery bakery still get the reduced rate.
Wrong Scanned Prices
When a price rings up wrong at Schnucks, Missouri has a state program for that: Department of Agriculture inspectors verify that items ring up accurately at the register.
Their price checks also confirm that the price on the shelf matches the price at the counter.
If you think a price is wrong, you can call the department's consumer complaint hotline at (573) 751-4278.
Returns After Checkout
You have seven days to bring a Schnucks purchase back for a refund, and it goes to your original form of payment.
A receipt, paper or in the Rewards app, is required for any return of $10 or more.
Returns under the Fresh Guarantee need a receipt every time, whatever the amount.
WIC purchases other than baby formula can't be returned, though you can exchange them for identical food items if the product is defective, spoiled or out of code.
