8 Precautions Virginians Should Take When Shopping at Food City
If you’re stocking up at Food City for Thanksgiving, every coupon feels like a small win.
But not all of them lower your total the way you’d expect.
Here are the precautions Virginians should take when shopping at Food City.
Note: This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Store policies, sales tax rules and program details are subject to change.
1. Loading Coupons Early
Loaded Food City coupons should be available within one hour after loading, according to the FAQ.
A coupon you tap in the parking lot may not be ready when you reach the register.
Then you may not get the savings on that item.
Plan on an hour.
Your account holds up to 250 loaded coupons, so we’d load ahead at home.
If a coupon still doesn’t redeem, speak to someone at the Customer Service desk in the front office.
2. Spending Fuel Bucks on Time
Food City’s Fuel Bucks expire on the last day of the month after you earn them.
Earn them in November, and they expire on December 31, unless a promotion says otherwise.
Expired Fuel Bucks save nothing.
At the pump, 150 Fuel Bucks currently save 15 cents a gallon on up to 20 gallons, so letting that many expire costs you up to $3.
Your balance is visible on a register receipt or online in your dashboard.
Your ValuCard has to be scanned at the pump or shown to the cashier to redeem Fuel Bucks.
3. Checking Recalls Yourself
Food City posts a recall list on its site.
It isn’t complete.
Food City sends shoppers to the Consumer Product Safety Commission or recalls.gov for full details.
If that list is your only source, a recall on something in your pantry could slip past you.
When a recalled product makes the news, we’d search recalls.gov first.
4. Enrolling in Auto Refills
Food City’s pharmacy portal and app can’t enroll you in Auto Refills at this time, according to the FAQ.
To enroll, contact your local Food City Pharmacy.
If you assume the site handled your monthly prescription, you could miss a refill.
Set a reminder.
5. Online Sale Prices
Food City won’t let you lock in a sale price by ordering before the sale ends.
Advertised prices change every Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. in stores.
Pickup updates at 3:01 a.m.
That leaves about three hours on Wednesday mornings when store and pickup prices can differ.
Build your pickup order after the update, and you’ll see the new sale prices.
If an item is priced above its listed price, Food City may contact you for instructions before completing your order.
Prices can slip at any grocer, so keep your phone close on pickup day.

6. Linking Your ValuCard
A ValuCard won't link to your Food City account if the last name and address don't match.
If you've moved or changed your last name, that could be the cause.
For help, call 276-623-5100.
7. Reading Gift Card Terms
Food City sells gift cards from restaurants, department stores and specialty shops at the gift card center in each store.
Virginia law bars dormancy, inactivity and service fees on a gift certificate issued by a merchant in the state.
The exception is a certificate given away through a loyalty, award or promotional program.
If the certificate has an expiration date, it has to state that date or give a phone number or web address where you can find it.
Not every card qualifies.
A card issued by a business outside Virginia may not fall under that law, so the terms printed on your card carry more weight.
As of Nov. 2, 2026, the limited-time offer of 2 Fuel Bucks a dollar on gift cards excludes Food City store gift cards, Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
8. Returning Discounted Items
Returning something to Food City?
Any offer you used on that item can't be used again, according to the FAQ.
So use an offer on an item you're sure you'll keep.
Tax on Coupon Items
Food City makes you responsible for the sales tax on digital coupon items and manufacturer coupon items.
The catch?
On a manufacturer coupon, the tax is calculated on the full value of the item being purchased.
So a manufacturer coupon doesn't lower the tax you owe.
What a $1 Coupon Does to Your Tax
Virginia's tax regulation treats a manufacturer's coupon and a retailer's coupon differently at a Food City register.
The regulation counts the value of a manufacturer's coupon as part of the sales price.
So with a $1.00 manufacturer coupon on a $5.00 item, you pay $4.00 at the register, but the tax is figured on the full $5.00.
A retailer's coupon works the other way, since the regulation says its value isn't included in the sales price.
With the same $1.00 off from a retailer's coupon, the tax applies only to the $4.00 you pay.
Your Data After Checkout
Food City combines your personal information with your purchase history, according to its privacy policy.
It may share your information with third parties.
That's the trade behind a ValuCard's savings.
You're responsible for all activity under your account or password.
Guard that password.
Scanner Inspections
Virginia's Office of Weights and Measures inspects and tests the scanners at Food City, along with all other commercially used weighing and measuring equipment.
In fiscal year 2024, its point-of-sale price verification inspections covered 58,742 items using store checkout scanners.
Those checks are the state's, so your receipt is the check you can run yourself.
State testing covers grocery scales.
The office investigates consumer complaints about alleged violations involving weighing and measuring devices.
