11 Ordinary Things Middle-Class North Carolinians Are Getting Priced Out Of

Ground beef in the South averaged $6.41 a pound in August. That’s a pricey burger night.

If you’re a middle-class North Carolinian, you’ve probably felt that squeeze in more places than the meat case.

Here are the ordinary things middle-class North Carolinians are getting priced out of.

Note: This is general information, not financial or insurance advice. Prices, rates and premiums are subject to change.

1. Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance base rates in North Carolina rose an average of 7.5% on June 1, 2025, under a settlement the state Department of Insurance announced.

A second average 7.5% step took effect on June 1, 2026.

If you stack the two, average base rates end up about 15.6% above where they started.

The North Carolina Rate Bureau had asked for an average 42.2% increase.

Where you live shifts the math, since the settlement set a first step averaging about 16% in the beach areas from Carteret to Brunswick counties, but only 4.4% in Buncombe, Watauga and Yancey counties.

In Charlotte, the settlement set steps of 9.3% and 9.2%.

The settlement bars the Rate Bureau from seeking another increase before June 1, 2027.

2. Mortgage Payments

North Carolina’s median sales price was about $370,000 in September, roughly flat from a year earlier, according to North Carolina Realtors.

Mortgage rates didn’t stay flat.

Nationally, Freddie Mac’s 30-year fixed mortgage rate averaged 7.40% on Oct. 8, against 6.30% a year earlier.

If you put 20% down on a $370,000 home, you’d borrow $296,000.

In our math, which covers principal and interest only, the payment on a 30-year loan at 6.30% is about $1,832 a month.

At 7.40%, it’s about $2,049.

That’s $217 more every month, or about $2,600 a year, on the same loan.

The house didn’t change.

3. Family Health Coverage

Family health coverage through an employer cost an average of $26,993 nationwide in 2025, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), a nonprofit health policy research organization.

That’s 6% higher than in 2024, while workers’ wages rose 4%.

Workers paid $6,850 of the total, on average.

If you cover only yourself, single coverage averaged $9,325, up 5% from the year before.

Those are national averages.

Your plan may differ.

4. Dental Care

Dental services rose 5.0% nationwide over the 12 months ending in August 2026, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports in its Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Prices for everything combined rose 3.4% over the same stretch.

That’s 1.6 points faster than the prices you pay overall.

Physicians’ services rose 2.0% in that stretch, so dental prices rose faster than physician prices.

5. Hospital Services

Hospital services were 5.2% pricier nationwide in August 2026 than a year earlier.

Medical care as a whole rose 1.6% over the same 12 months.

That puts hospital prices 3.6 points ahead of medical care overall.

Who Counts as Middle Class

Pew Research Center treats a household as middle income when it earns two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income, adjusted for household size.

For a three-person household in 2022, that worked out to about $56,600 to $169,800.

North Carolina’s median household income was $72,388 in Census Bureau estimates covering 2020 through 2024.

Apply the same two-thirds-to-double rule to that figure, and you get roughly $48,300 to $144,800.

That range is our math, not Pew’s, and it skips the household-size adjustment.

6. Ground Beef

Ground beef in the South, a region that includes North Carolina, averaged $6.41 a pound in August 2026.

A year earlier, it averaged $5.96.

That’s 7.6% more, or about 45 cents a pound.

Prices across the South overall rose 3.1% over those 12 months, so ground beef rose more than twice as fast.

Nationwide, ground beef averaged $6.92, up from $6.32.

If you buy 5 pounds in a month, you’d pay about $2.25 more than last August, at 45 cents more a pound.

7. Coffee

A pound of ground coffee averaged $9.30 nationwide in August 2026, up from $8.87 a year earlier, a gain of 43 cents or 4.8%.

The broader coffee index rose 6.1%, faster than the 3.4% rise in prices overall.

If you buy a pound a week, that gain comes to about $22 over a year.

8. Natural Gas Service

Piped natural gas in the South, a region that includes North Carolina, averaged $2.10 a therm in August 2026, up from $1.96 a year earlier.

That’s about 14 cents more a therm, a rise of roughly 7%.

That’s above the $1.71 national average.

The South region’s price index for the same service rose 7.7% over those 12 months.

If your furnace or water heater runs on piped natural gas, you may have seen a similar rise, though your utility’s rate can differ from the regional average.

9. Car Repairs

Car repair prices rose 5.2% nationwide over the 12 months ending in August 2026, in the CPI’s category for motor vehicle maintenance and repair.

Motor vehicle parts and equipment rose 0.9% in the same stretch.

Prices overall rose 3.4%, so what you pay for repairs rose 1.8 points faster.

10. Water, Sewer and Trash

Prices for water, sewer and trash collection were up 4.8% nationwide from a year earlier in August 2026.

Electricity was up 3.8% in the same comparison.

That puts the water, sewer and trash prices you pay a full point ahead of electricity.

Nationwide, gasoline averaged $4.35 a gallon, up from $3.43.

If you fill a 15-gallon tank at the American Automobile Association's Oct. 11 North Carolina average of $3.98 a gallon, it costs about $59.70, against $42.90 at last year's $2.86.

That's about $17 more per fill-up.

If you fill that tank once a week, the difference comes to about $874 over a year.
