4 Florida License Rules That Change for Drivers 80 and Older
Once you turn 80 in Florida, renewing your license means passing a vision test.
You can take it at a driver license office or meet the same standard through your doctor.
Here are the Florida license rules that change for drivers 80 and older, so your next renewal holds no surprises.
Note: This is general information, not legal advice. Licensing rules and fees are subject to change, so confirm the current requirements with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
1. Six-Year Renewals
Once you turn 80, your Florida driver license renewal cycle gets shorter.
The department says a Class E driver license must be renewed every eight years for drivers 79 and younger.
At age 80, the renewal period drops to six years.
A license renewed at 80 expires on the birthday that falls six years after the month your old one expired.
If you’re getting your first Florida license at 80 or older, you get the same six-year term.
2. Required Vision Tests
If you’re 80 or older, renewing means passing a vision test at any driver license office or meeting the same standard through a doctor.
The department sets the minimum at 20/70 in either eye or both eyes together, with or without corrective lenses.
At a Florida driver license service center, the test carries no additional charge.
A Florida-licensed medical doctor, osteopathic physician or optometrist is accepted.
Once you pass, you or your doctor submit the Mature Driver Vision Test form, known as Form 72119.
If your test leads to a referral to an eye specialist, you submit the Report of Eye Exam, Form 72010.
Your eye specialist has to complete it when either eye tests 20/50 or worse, with or without lenses.
That can happen even when you meet the 20/70 minimum.
How Long Form 72119 Stays Good
The Mature Driver Vision Test form stops being valid one year after the date of your exam.
3. Renewing Without a Trip to the Office
Can you still renew your driver license without stepping into an office once you turn 80?
If your records show you’re eligible, the department has to mail your renewal notice at least 30 days before your birthday.
Under the statute, the notice directs you to appear at a driver license office or send the completed notice and fees in through a convenience service.
If you’re under 80, you can send the notice and fees in for an eight-year renewal without reexamination.
At 80, you can’t submit that renewal unless your physician or optometrist has already sent your vision results electronically.
A remote renewal at 80 still earns a six-year license.
The department says some drivers may be eligible to renew online, and its MyDMV Portal shows whether you are.
If you can’t renew online, there’s a Driver License check tool.
You enter your license number there to check your status and download an application if you’re eligible.

4. Failed Vision Tests
If you fail the vision test at 80 or older, the department gives you an identification card at no charge.
Your driving privilege is denied in that case.
An identification card costs $25, but the fee schedule exempts an applicant 80 or older whose driving privilege was denied after a failed vision test.
What Renewal Costs
A Class E driver license renewal costs $48.
You can renew up to 18 months before the expiration date printed on your license.
Let the license expire, and you have 12 months to renew it.
The department adds a late fee of $15 during that window.
The Safe Driver Notation
A clean driving record can earn a "Safe Driver" notation on your license.
To earn it, your record has to show no revocations, disqualifications or suspensions for the preceding 7 years.
Your record also has to show no convictions for the preceding 3 years, with certain nonmoving violations excepted.
Physician Reports to the State
Florida's reporting statute authorizes any physician, person or agency to tell the department about a licensed driver's mental or physical disability that affects driving.
That authority covers your physician.
If your doctor sends one, the report is confidential.
No civil or criminal action may be brought against a physician, person or agency for providing the information the statute requires.
A report also can't be used as evidence in a civil or criminal trial.
Renewing From Out of State
If your license expires while you're out of state, you may be issued a 90-day temporary driving permit without reexamination.
At the end of those 90 days, you must return to Florida or apply for a license where you are.
