6 Giant Food Perks Marylanders Keep Leaving on the Table

Giant Food’s Bonus Card tracks a lot more for a shopper than the discount that shows up at checkout.

It’s easy to stop at Flexible Rewards and spend them on milk, eggs, or whatever free item shows up in your inbox on Fridays.

The card’s other perks mostly go unused.

These are the Giant Food perks Marylanders keep leaving on the table.

1. One Scan Loads Every Coupon

Giant Food’s Savings Station kiosk turns a single scan into every coupon a shopper has coming.

A Bonus Card scan or a typed-in phone number loads every personalized offer and weekly digital coupon onto that account, and Giant applies all of it automatically at checkout.

Those coupons would otherwise take several minutes to click through one by one in the app.

Giant put a kiosk near the entrance of all 162 of its stores this year.

Many shoppers still walk past it toward the produce.

One tap changes that.

2. 10 Cents off Every Gallon

Giant Food’s loyalty program pays out in gas, too, and many Flexible Rewards members never redeem a single point at the pump.

The math is simple.

Every 100 points a shopper earns is worth 10 cents off a gallon at Giant’s fuel stations or a nearby partner Shell station.

Those points come from the same grocery trips already earning a point per dollar spent.

A single big grocery trip, the kind that stocks a freezer before a holiday, can shave a dollar or more off the next fill-up.

Redeeming takes one extra step at the pump.

That swap rarely happens.

The Math Behind Giant’s Gas Discount

Giant’s fuel discount runs on a simple ratio, and the fastest way to see it is with the numbers.

An $80 grocery trip earns 80 Flexible Rewards points on its own, worth about 8 cents off a gallon at the next fill-up.

Stack a few trips before redeeming, and that discount grows past a quarter a gallon without much effort.

Those points don’t last forever, either.

Giant expires unused points well before many shoppers think to spend them.

3. Cash Back From Another App

Giant Food linked its checkout data to a separate cash-back app called Upside, and many Flexible Rewards members have never even downloaded it.

The two programs run side by side.

A shopper still earns Flexible Rewards points at checkout the normal way.

The Upside app pays separate cash back into a linked debit card or PayPal account for that same trip.

Giant only pays for that cash back when its data confirms the purchase is money the store wouldn’t have made otherwise.

The personalized offers change from shopper to shopper and week to week.

Giant locked in exclusivity around every one of its stores, too, so a competing grocery chain within a mile and a half can’t run the same Upside deals nearby.

Double-dipping isn’t cheating here.

It’s how the deal was built.

4. Double Points on Store-Brand Basics

Giant doubles Flexible Rewards points on its store-brand bread, milk, bottled water, frozen vegetables and cheese, and shoppers chasing name-brand coupons walk past it.

That’s the whole trick.

Two items that already cost less than the national brand earn twice the points on top of the lower price.

A shopper filling a cart with Giant’s bread, milk and cheese instead of Wonder, Organic Valley and Cabot can double a week’s points without changing the route through the store.

Nobody has to hunt for a coupon to make it work.

5. More Points for Healthier Choices

Giant’s shelf tags carry a one-to-three-star Guiding Stars rating, and Guiding Stars-rated items earn double Flexible Rewards points, too.

Many shoppers never notice.

The stars have sat on those tags for years.

Those doubled points started in 2022.

Giant built the bonus to nudge shoppers toward the item with fewer additives or less sodium instead of the item next to it on the same shelf.

A 2024 Grocery Dive report found Giant’s shoppers had already collected more than 500 million points through that bonus, with roughly 115,000 households using it every week.

A shelf tag many shoppers read as a nutrition label is also a point multiplier.

6. Points for Every Pharmacy Visit

Giant credits 100 Flexible Rewards points to a shopper’s account for every new prescription, refill, transfer or immunization filled at its pharmacy.

That happens whether or not the shopper remembers to scan a card at the register up front.

The system does the work.

A flu shot booked as fall settles in, a routine refill, and a prescription transferred in from another pharmacy each trigger the same 100 points on their own.

Those points stack on top of whatever that shopper earned buying groceries the same trip.

No extra app, no extra step at the pharmacy counter.

Giant calls itself the first grocery pharmacy chain in the region to reward transactions this way.

A 2024 Grocery Dive report found 41% of Giant shoppers presenting a loyalty card at the pharmacy counter, up from 35%.

Many shoppers still treat the pharmacy counter as a separate errand from the rest of the store.

The points land in the same account either way.

Order “Maryland-style” crab outside the Chesapeake region, and it rarely tastes like anything a Marylander grew up eating.

The seasoning, the cut, even the bread on the side all come out a little bit wrong.
