9 Food Lion Secrets Employees Wish North Carolina Shoppers Knew

Food Lion has been based in Salisbury, North Carolina, since its founding in 1957, and its employees know the chain’s system from the inside out.

Much of that inside knowledge lives in store policies and loyalty programs, not on the weekly flyer.

Many shoppers never hear it.

These are the Food Lion secrets employees wish North Carolina shoppers knew.

1. MVP Card Unlocks Instant Pricing

Food Lion’s free loyalty card (MVP) is the chain’s rewards program.

Scanning it unlocks the chain’s MVP prices.

A shopper who scans the card at checkout sees the discount apply automatically, with no membership fee.

Signing up costs nothing, and the same card works across the chain’s more than 1,100 stores in ten states.

In 2021, The Loyalty Report, produced by the loyalty firm Bond with Visa, ranked the program second among the best U.S. grocery loyalty programs.

The report had recognized it the year before, too.

Food Lion said at the time that customers had saved more than $130 million through Shop & Earn since its February 2018 launch.

2. Load-to-Card App Coupons

Food Lion’s app puts a digital version of the MVP card on a shopper’s phone, along with weekly ads, a shopping list, and load-to-card coupons.

When the app launched in 2017, the chain said an average month offered more than $250 worth of load-to-card coupons through it.

The app’s MVP Wallet also shows a shopper’s year-to-date savings next to redeemed rewards and coupons.

3. Shop & Earn Rewards That Auto-Redeem

Shop & Earn adds a second layer on top of the MVP card, with personalized monthly offers that Food Lion valued at around $20 a month in 2020.

Earned rewards redeem automatically on the next shopping trip.

Activating a month’s offers takes a single click, and Food Lion tracks the qualifying purchases from there.

The program works alongside the MVP card, paper and digital coupons, and in-store sales, so one purchase can count toward all of them.

In its first two years, the program put more than $58 million back into customers’ pockets, and unused rewards carry through the end of the following month before they expire.

At that 2020 value, a household that earned every month’s rewards would collect about $240 over a year.

4. Savings Center Kiosk

Food Lion stores have a Savings Center kiosk where a shopper enters a phone number to load personalized offers onto the MVP account.

Those offers are based on the shopper’s purchase history, and they come off automatically at checkout.

Nothing needs clipping.

5. First-of-the-Month Offer Refresh

Food Lion refreshes Shop & Earn offers at the beginning of each month, and each offer has to be activated in the app or on the website before it counts.

Each month’s spending window closes on the last day of the month, so a shopper who activates offers late has fewer days to reach the targets.

Rewards earned during the month load straight to the MVP card.

Rewards earned on a Food Lion To Go online order count too, and they come off on a later trip to the store.

None of These Programs Work Best Alone

Food Lion’s MVP card, the app’s load-to-card coupons, and Shop & Earn rewards are three separate systems that can all apply to the same cart.

A shopper who stacks all three on one trip saves more than any single program delivers alone.

6. Scan Guarantee at the Register

If the price that rings up at the register is higher than the shelf tag, Food Lion’s scan guarantee kicks in.

The shopper gets one of that item free, plus any identical items at the shelf price.

The policy covers a sale sign as well as a shelf tag, so a mismatch with either one qualifies.

7. Double-Your-Money-Back on Private Brand

Food Lion backs its private-brand groceries and fresh departments with a Double Your Money Back Guarantee.

A shopper who isn’t satisfied with a store-brand item, or with something from produce, meat, deli, bakery, or dairy, can return it for a refund of double the purchase price.

8. Rain Checks on Sold-Out Sale Items

Food Lion has offered rain checks when a sale item sells out before a shopper gets to it.

An empty shelf doesn't have to mean a missed sale price.

A Raleigh TV station's roundup of grocery coupon policies, last updated in 2018, reported that Food Lion's rain checks didn't expire.

9. Food Lion Feeds and the Round-Up Program

Food Lion Feeds has donated more than 1.5 billion meals since the hunger-relief program started in 2014, funded partly by shoppers who round up their total at checkout.

Shoppers can round up at checkout or through Food Lion To Go during campaigns like the fall Apple Bag Campaign.

Food Lion has committed to donating 3 billion meals by 2032.

Shop & Earn rewards can go to the same cause.

Since 2020, shoppers have been able to donate their rewards to the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation in $1 increments through the app or the Food Lion website.
