9 Precautions Virginians Should Take When Shopping at Aldi
Aldi can save you money, but it doesn’t work quite like other grocery stores.
Virginians who shop there can avoid a few small hassles by knowing the store’s quirks ahead of time.
Here are the precautions worth taking before your next Aldi trip.
1. Bringing the Right Payment
Aldi’s help center says the store doesn’t accept checks or Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits.
It also doesn’t take insurance health spending cards such as United, Aetna Health Food and Humana Spending.
Aldi does take cash, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards and contactless pay such as Apple Pay.
If you’re relying on a spending card, you’ll want another way to pay.
2. Keeping Your Receipt
Aldi’s Twice as Nice promises to replace a product and refund your money if you’re not 100% satisfied with its quality.
Aldi’s return policy says a receipt is required for a refund to your original form of payment.
Without one, Aldi issues a Merchandise Credit gift card equal to the item’s current retail price.
You also have to return the packaging and any unused product to the store manager.
Keep that receipt.
What the Guarantee Leaves Out
The guarantee doesn’t apply to non-food Aldi Finds items, replacement products from a prior claim, alcohol national brands or non-quality issues.
If you return several units of the same product for the same quality issue, refunds may cover all of them, but you’ll get only one replacement item.
Aldi also reserves the right to limit, refuse or deny refunds, replacements or merchandise credits in cases of suspected fraud, abuse or misuse.
3. Carrying a Quarter
A quarter unlocks an Aldi cart, according to its cart policy.
Keep one in your pocket so you aren’t hunting for change at the entrance.
You get the quarter back when you return the cart to the corral.
4. Bagging Your Groceries
You can bring your bags to Aldi or buy a reusable Aldi bag.
If you forget yours, Aldi’s online ordering page says customers are charged a small fee for bags used, similar to an in-store transaction.
Packing your groceries yourself, says Aldi 101, helps keep lines moving faster.
5. Reaching Aldi Finds Early
Aldi Finds are available for a limited time while supplies last.
Weekly Finds are limited premium items that aren’t always food, according to Aldi 101.
That’s why timing matters.
Because Aldi can’t place holds on Finds, you can’t reserve one.
Inventory varies by location, so you’ll need to visit your local store to see if a Find is in stock.
Go as soon as possible after the product goes on sale.
6. Leaving Manufacturer’s Coupons Home
Aldi is unable to accept manufacturer’s coupons for name-brand items.
If you’ve got a stack of coupons in your wallet, leave it home.
Aldi says it negotiates the best possible prices with its suppliers.
7. Planning Around Holiday Hours
On Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day in 2026, Aldi stores are closed, according to the hours page and the federal holiday schedule.
Stores are also closed on New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.
On Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, stores operate limited hours.
You can use the store locator to see the hours, services and payment options for your location.
8. Watching the 14-Day Window
Aldi makes price adjustments on Aldi Finds within 14 days of purchase.
Take your receipt back to the store where you bought the product.
The store manager will make the adjustment.
Seasonal products and products that are available on a regular basis don’t qualify.
9. Catching Scanning Errors
Your Aldi receipt is the starting point if an item was scanned incorrectly.
Bring it back and ask for the manager on duty.
Check it before you leave so you can catch an error while you’re still in the store.
Temporary pending charges can appear on your account after a digital transaction.
Depending on your bank, those charges should remove themselves within 10 business days.
That’s about two weeks.
Online Prices
Aldi says online prices may vary slightly from the in-store prices in your area.
Some in-store promotions may not apply to online orders.
Online items may also be priced higher to cover the cost of personal shopping or delivery.
You’ll want to compare an online total with the shelf prices at your store.
Pickup Minimums
Pickup and delivery orders must be at least $10.
Before you check out, make sure your cart clears that minimum.
