Food City’s Answer Is No

Shoppers from Kingsport to Sevierville build their week around Food City, and the chain doesn’t give seniors a discount on any day of the week.

Food City puts the savings on the ValuCard, where you clip digital coupons to the card and earn Fuel Bucks toward gas at the pump.

A cashier in Bristol scans that card for a 68-year-old and charges exactly what a 28-year-old pays in Johnson City.

Food City’s pharmacy counter runs a Wellness Club and a $4 generic drug plan, and neither program asks your age.

So the cheapest Food City trip for a shopper over 60 looks like everybody else’s: A loaded ValuCard and a list written after the weekly ad starts.

The Chains That Give Nothing

Walmart doesn't run a senior discount in any state, and its half-price Walmart+ Assist membership goes by income, since it's built for shoppers on Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

An Aldi spokesperson told AARP the company typically doesn't offer discounts, and Food Lion and Trader Joe's carry no senior discount either.

Whole Foods gives nothing for age, and Amazon's cheaper Prime Access membership follows benefits rather than birthdays.

What Doesn't Count
