3 Sam’s Club App Mistakes That Cost Pennsylvanians at the Exit

Scan & Go makes a Sam’s Club trip feel almost too easy.

Scan your cart, pay on your phone, and head for the door.

Except there are a few things that can stop that smooth exit, and some of them are easy to miss until you’re standing in front of the greeter.

Here are three Sam’s Club app mistakes that can cost Pennsylvania members time, money, or an extra trip through the checkout line.

1. Scanning Weighed Produce

Sam’s Club’s Scan & Go app rings up almost everything in a warehouse cart, but weighed produce is the one exception.

Loose produce priced by the scale instead of a barcode has to go through a staffed register.

It’s never the app.

Scan a bag of loose apples along with everything else in the cart, and the charge for it never goes through.

That gap doesn’t surface until the exit check, when a greeter or the archway camera catches the mismatch.

Someone has to carry the bag back to a register for a manual ring-up while the line behind you waits.

Skip the produce scale on your phone and let a register handle it instead.

2. Trying to Scan Alcohol Alone

Sam’s Club lets its Scan & Go app ring up beer, wine, and liquor in clubs where local law allows it.

The sale doesn’t finish inside the app, though.

An employee still has to check a government ID at the exit and confirm the buyer’s age before the payment goes through.

That part never changes.

The check itself never lives on your phone.

Show up without a physical ID because your phone has everything else you need, and that bottle of wine sits unpaid in the cart while an associate sorts it out.

Bring a physical ID along, even for a member who’s shopped there for twenty years.

3. Walking Past the Exit Check

Sam’s Club’s Scan & Go app marks a purchase “paid” the instant checkout finishes inside the app.

Some members read that screen as a pass to walk straight past the exit check.

It isn’t one.

Sam’s Club still checks every shopper on the way out, app or no app.

At most clubs, a greeter scans the receipt and randomly rechecks a few items from the cart.

At a growing number of locations, cameras in an overhead archway scan the cart instead and wave many shoppers through.

Either way, the app’s “paid” badge doesn’t replace that check.

The greeter or the camera calls back the shopper who tries to skip it anyway, turning a two-second pass into a five-minute one.

Cost and Substitution Gaps in Pickup

Sam’s Club runs Pickup through that same app, and the first two gaps in it involve money, not time.

Assuming Pickup Costs Extra

Sam’s Club’s Pickup service, ordered through the same app as Scan & Go, doesn’t charge a fee.

There’s no delivery charge, no service charge, and no order minimum to hit first.

Nobody mentions that part.

Assume Pickup costs extra, the way many grocery chains charge for the same convenience, and a paid delivery slot starts to look like the safer bet.

It isn’t.

Check the Pickup tab in the app before reaching for a paid delivery window.

Skipping the Substitution Settings

Sam’s Club asks upfront, inside that same Pickup flow, whether a member wants substitutions if an item sells out.

Opt into substitutions, and a similar item fills the gap automatically.

Skip that setting, and the item disappears from the order instead, with the total adjusted to match.

Either choice is fine.

What happens if nobody chooses either one?

The order defaults to no substitutions, and unpacking bags at the car is usually the first time anyone notices the sold-out item is still missing.

No swap, no warning, just a line missing from the receipt total.

Timing Gaps in Pickup

Sam’s Club’s Pickup app also runs on a clock many members never check until it’s already worked against them.

The clock doesn’t wait.

Missing the Edit-Window Cutoff

Sam’s Club locks a Pickup order before the scheduled time arrives, not after.

Orders of 48 items or fewer can still be changed up to three hours before the pickup window opens.

Bigger orders, 49 items or more, lock sixteen hours out instead.

There are no exceptions to either cutoff.

Remembering a missing item an hour before pickup doesn’t help once that window has closed.

Whatever’s already in the cart is what shows up curbside, and that missing item becomes its own trip inside the store.

Letting a Ready Order Sit

A completed Pickup order at Sam’s Club holds for 24 hours after the scheduled time, not indefinitely.

After that window closes, the order is subject to cancellation.

It’s gone by then, back on the shelf or in the cooler.

What happens to a same-day slot pushed to tomorrow because the day got away from someone?

It can cancel outright, and that member comes back to an empty spot in the pickup line instead of a bagged order.

Set a reminder for the pickup window itself, not just the day.

Vanishing Checkout Lines Nationwide

Sam's Club plans to pull traditional and self-checkout lanes out of nearly all 600 of its U.S. clubs, betting the whole model on Scan & Go instead.

The company hasn't set a public deadline for finishing the switch.

Membership dues went up alongside that shift, to $60 a year for a standard Club card and $120 for Plus, the first increase since 2022.

That's the tradeoff.
