7 Sam’s Club Charges Tennesseans Don’t Notice Until the Renewal

A second household member on a Sam’s Club account costs $55 a year nationwide, stacked right on top of whatever the primary card already runs.

That’s money many people don’t plan for on a card that shares the same warehouse.

Overall, Sam’s Club hands over solid value for the price. No membership program gets every line item right, though.

These are the Sam’s Club charges Tennesseans often don’t notice until the renewal.

Note: This is general information, not financial advice. Sam’s Club prices, fees, and membership terms are subject to change, so confirm current details with Sam’s Club.

1. Auto-Renewal’s Any-Card Charge

Every Sam’s Club membership renews automatically once a year, and the full fee, $60 for Club or $120 for Plus, charges itself without a warning call.

That charge can land on a card the member forgot was even saved to the account.

Sam’s Club’s own membership terms allow the company to bill any card already on file, including one added for an add-on member, if the original payment method has expired or failed.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date, and the charge never lands.

Miss that window by a single day, and it’s already charged.

Nobody gets a call first.

2. The Add-On Card Renewal

A Sam’s Club membership includes one free extra household cardholder, a spouse, a partner, or anyone living under the same roof.

Past that first card, Sam’s Club charges $55 a year for every additional add-on.

That fee renews right alongside the primary membership.

A household in Clarksville running three cards under one account, a couple plus a grown kid still home for the summer, can be carrying an extra $55 or more nobody remembers signing up for.

It shows up on the same renewal charge as everything else.

One bill covers three memberships.

3. Full Price at Renewal

A Club membership costs $60 a year at Sam’s Club, and a Plus membership costs $120, though almost nobody pays that price in year one.

Sam’s Club is currently running a new-member discount through September 30 that drops a Club card to $25 and a Plus card to $55.

That’s an honest discount, not a bait-and-switch, and Sam’s Club is upfront that it’s a first-year offer only.

The catch shows up at renewal.

Auto-renewal doesn’t charge the discounted price a second time.

It charges the full $60 or $120, the number that was in the fine print the whole time.

That’s twice the price.

A shopper in Knoxville who joined for $25 in September can open a renewal notice next September and find a bill more than double what they paid.

The Math Behind Sam’s Club’s Renewal Jump

Sam’s Club’s discounted Club membership runs $25 for a first year that normally costs $60, a $35 jump that lands on the very next bill.

The Plus tier’s gap is even wider, $55 for the first year against a regular $120 price, a $65 jump at renewal.

4. Sam’s Cash on a Clock

Plus members earn 2% Sam’s Cash back on every qualifying Sam’s Club purchase, up to $750 a year now that Sam’s Club has raised the cap.

Many members plan to use that balance to cover next year’s renewal charge.

Sam’s Club’s own Sam’s Cash rules put a clock on that plan.

Any balance sitting in the account dashboard expires after six months if the membership doesn’t renew.

Let the card lapse for six months or longer, and Sam’s Club forfeits the rest of it outright.

Gone.

That’s the whole trap: The renewal charge Tennesseans expected to shrink lands at full price instead, with none of that forfeited Sam’s Cash left to offset it.

5. Free Shipping, Plus Members Only

Sam’s Club reserves free shipping and free delivery on $50-plus orders for Plus members only.

A Club membership never unlocks that perk, no matter how big the online order gets.

Order paper towels, cat litter, and bottled water online from a Chattanooga address on a Club card, and a shipping or delivery charge lands on every one of them.

Plus members skip it completely.

It’s one more line Tennesseans rarely compare until the upgrade pitch shows up at renewal.

6. Express Delivery’s Two-Tier Fee

A rushed Sam’s Club order costs a Club member more than double what a Plus member pays.

Express Delivery, the rush option through the Sam’s Club app, charges Club members a flat $22 on every order, no matter the size.

Plus members pay just $10 per order under that same service, also with no minimum.

That’s not a rounding error.

That gap holds on every single rush order, not just the first one.

A Club member who orders Express delivery twice a month is paying an extra $24 a month that a Plus membership would cut by more than half.

It’s a charge that keeps repeating until the renewal notice arrives with the upgrade offer attached.

7. One Pharmacy List, Two Prices

A maintenance prescription costs more at Sam’s Club without the Plus discount list, refill after refill.

Plus membership unlocks more than 600 generic prescriptions priced under $10 each.

Club members can use the pharmacy too, just without that list.

Without it, the same generic often rings up at the pharmacy’s regular price instead.

Full price, every refill.

For a Tennessee household filling a maintenance prescription every month, the gap between the two prices compounds over a full year.

It’s a price difference that renews with the card every year the member stays on Club instead of upgrading.

Where Plus Pays for Itself

Sam’s Club’s Plus membership costs $60 more than Club every year, and that gap only closes with regular use.

Free shipping, free delivery, the deeper pharmacy list, and 2% Sam’s Cash on everyday purchases all stack up fast for a household that shops there often.

A family placing a few online orders a month, filling a regular prescription, and running $150 through the register on many trips can clear that $60 gap without much effort.

For someone who visits Sam’s Club twice a year, none of that math works.

Club stays the better deal.

The upgrade pitch that shows up at renewal isn’t automatically the right call, and it isn’t automatically the wrong one either.

A Discount That Never Renews

Sam’s Club’s Instant Savings program doesn’t care which tier a member holds or when the card renews.

Every discount in the current Instant Savings book applies automatically at checkout.

No clipping required.

No code, no separate signup.

Scan the item at the register, or scan it while shopping through the Scan & Go app, and the lower price rings up on the spot.

A new savings book drops several times a year, and Sam’s Club emails or mails it to members who opt in.

It’s the rare part of the membership that treats a Club card and a Plus card exactly the same.
