But that doesn’t mean the more than one in five South Carolinians who are 65 or older shouldn’t shop there.
These are the Food Lion perks South Carolinians over 60 don’t always get around to using.
1. MVP Shop & Earn Rewards
Food Lion built its MVP loyalty program for a South Carolina where more than one in five residents are 65 or older.
Shop & Earn is the free card’s main feature.
Food Lion posts a new batch of personalized offers on the first of every month, built around what a shopper already buys.
A shopper has until the end of that month to earn one.
Redeeming it is a second deadline: A reward not spent by the end of the following month expires for good.
Two deadlines, back to back.
Food Lion kept building on MVP into 2026, running a three-week MVP Savings Spectacular of rotating weekly deals for cardholders that June.
Social Security retirement benefits start at age 62 and arrive as a single deposit each month, not a weekly paycheck, according to the Social Security Administration.
A retiree whose grocery budget runs on that one monthly deposit tends to open the Shop & Earn tab only around deposit day.
By then, the previous month’s personalized offer has already expired unused.
2. Loading MVP Digital Coupons
Food Lion’s MVP card carries a digital coupon gallery on the app and the website, separate from Shop & Earn.
A shopper browses that gallery and taps to load whatever fits the week’s list.
Nothing applies at the register unless it was loaded onto the card ahead of time.
No load, no discount.
A paper coupon clipped from Sunday’s insert still works the old way, but a digital one sitting unloaded in the gallery does nothing at checkout.
That’s an extra step a shopper who grew up clipping paper never had to add before.
It’s easy to keep shopping the old way and skip the app step altogether.
3. Military Discount Days
Food Lion posts a 10% MVP discount every Veterans Day for active-duty, Guard, Reserve, and retired military shoppers and their families.
Food Lion has extended a matching discount around Memorial Day in some years.
Two days, full stop.
Its Veterans Day announcement is the retailer’s only current, on-the-record confirmation of the offer.
It’s worth asking a cashier ahead of Memorial Day weekend to confirm that year’s policy.
South Carolina is home to Fort Jackson, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, and Joint Base Charleston.
Nationally, more than one in four veterans is 75 or older, and fewer than one in ten is younger than 35, according to Census Bureau survey data.
The population eligible for this discount skews far older than the word “military” suggests.
A shopper needs an MVP card and a military ID at checkout, and the offer works in-store only, not through Food Lion To Go pickup or delivery.
Pharmacy, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, lottery, postage stamps, and services don’t count toward it.
A retired veteran who assumes this discount is only for someone still in uniform skips the register line entirely, unaware retired status counts too.
Delivery-only shoppers lose the discount by default on both of those two days, with no workaround built into Food Lion To Go.
Why There’s No Food Lion Senior Discount Day
Food Lion doesn’t run a dedicated senior discount day at any of its stores, South Carolina included.
A company spokesperson told AARP, the retiree advocacy group, that the chain skips a senior discount.
Food Lion keeps prices in check instead through weekly sales and the free MVP program.
That’s worth knowing. A search for “Food Lion senior discount” still turns up third-party sites naming a weekly percentage Food Lion has never confirmed.
4. Instacart’s Senior Support Line
Food Lion delivers groceries across more than 90% of its footprint through a partnership with Instacart, and that reach covers South Carolina.
Instacart staffs a support line for customers 60 and older.
A live person answers.
That person can walk a caller through setting up an account or placing an order over the phone instead of through an app.
The number is 1-844-981-3433, staffed daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern.
Food Lion doesn’t mention it on a checkout screen or a receipt.
That number works whether or not a shopper ever opens the delivery app at all.
5. Matching a Competitor’s Coupon
Food Lion’s printed coupon policy accepts a rival grocery store’s coupon at checkout.
The fine print caps it at two copies of the identical coupon, applied to two of that identical item, not two different coupons for two different items.
The policy draws one more line many shoppers never notice: Food Lion accepts a rival’s paper coupon but not one earned through a competitor’s loyalty app or digital coupon gallery.
Harris Teeter, Ingles, and any other South Carolina competitor’s printed flyer coupon qualifies as long as the item matches.
A shopper who has bought groceries at the same Food Lion for more than twenty years remembers when the closest thing to a coupon app was Sunday’s newspaper insert.
That shopper rarely thinks to bring in somebody else’s paper coupon at all.
That’s just habit.
The flyer sitting on the kitchen counter at home could have covered that same item for less, and it never leaves the house.
6. MVP Fall Haul Bonus
Food Lion has run a fall bonus for MVP cardholders in each of the past several years, though not always under the same name.
It was “Be the Season’s MVP” in 2023, “Season of Savings” in 2024, and “MVP Fall Haul” in 2025.
Its 2025 version required six separate trips of at least $50 apiece between October 15 and November 26, all rung up on the same MVP card.
Hit that sixth trip, and Food Lion prints a $20 coupon at the bottom of the receipt, good for two weeks.
Six trips, not five.
Food Lion had not announced a 2026 edition as of this writing, or confirmed the bonus will return under the “MVP Fall Haul” name again.
Widowhood, divorce, and grown children moving out mean many of South Carolina’s older shoppers, the more than one in five residents 65 and older, are running a one-person kitchen.
A single-person household often shops in smaller batches, once every ten days instead of once a week.
That pace can complete five of those six trips and still walk away with nothing.
The whole $20 depends on that sixth trip landing inside the window.
