8 Harris Teeter Systems Employees Wish North Carolinians Understood

More than 600 produce items move through a Harris Teeter’s Farmers Market section every day, by the chain’s count.

If you’re paying attention, any one of them can show up as higher than the listed price.

These are the Harris Teeter systems employees wish North Carolinians understood.

1. Cashing in on a Wrong Scan

Harris Teeter posts a scan guarantee that many shoppers never think to test.

An item that rings up higher than its shelf tag is supposed to lose that fight.

You’re supposed to win it.

Harris Teeter hands over that mispriced item free and prices any extra units correctly, per its posted coupon policy.

Alcohol and tobacco don’t qualify, no matter how many times the scanner misfires.

The Math Behind Harris Teeter’s Scan Guarantee

Harris Teeter’s scan guarantee caps out at five mismatches in one shopping trip, not five per item.

Ring up six items over their shelf tags in the same order, and the first five come off free while the sixth only gets its price difference refunded.

2. Watching the Fuel Points Clock

Harris Teeter’s Fuel Points don’t last as long as you might assume.

You earn one point for every dollar spent on eligible groceries.

Every 100 points knocks 10 cents off a gallon of gas, up to a full dollar off at Harris Teeter fuel stations or partner gas stations like BP and Amoco.

Points earned in a given month expire at the end of the following month.

They don’t roll over forever.

Let a balance sit two months, and you lose it.

3. Hitting the Digital Coupon Ceiling

Harris Teeter’s digital coupons load straight onto your VIC card, no clipping required.

That’s the same card that’s stood for “Very Important Customer” since Harris Teeter launched it in the mid-1990s, per North Carolina History.

Once loaded, a coupon redeems automatically at checkout.

The ceiling sits at 150, the most digital coupons a household can load onto one VIC card at a time.

Hit that count, and a new coupon won’t load onto the card.

Each coupon works once, on one item, and never combines with a paper coupon for that same item.

Present both anyway, and the register keeps whichever discount pays more, then hands the other one back unused.

Off-total-order digital coupons carry an exclusion list: Alcohol, tobacco, stamps, tickets, lottery tickets, and gift cards don’t qualify, no matter how large the credit.

A Manager’s Special markdown doesn’t qualify for a digital coupon at all.

Load one anyway, and it simply won’t apply at the register.

4. Working Around a Rain Check

Harris Teeter issues you a rain check when a sale item sells out, and the slip comes with its expiration date.

Your rain check is only good for 60 days from the day it’s written, per Harris Teeter’s coupon policy.

Rain checks are honored for three items or three deals, whichever the ad allows.

Pull yours out a year later, and the cashier can’t ring it up.

It’s already expired.

A paper coupon for that same item can’t ride along with your rain check either, per that same policy.

5. Produce’s Double Refund

Harris Teeter backs its Farmers Market produce with a guarantee many grocery shoppers never use.

Return an unsatisfying peach or a bag of wilted lettuce with your receipt, an ID, and a VIC card, and Harris Teeter refunds double the price.

That’s twice the money, no argument.

More than 600 produce items move through that section every day, per Harris Teeter’s Farmers Market page, and any one of them qualifies.

Harris Teeter’s refund policy names this the yourdouble guarantee.

It reaches past produce into Rancher beef, Reserve Angus, Fishermans Market seafood, and the Fresh Foods Market line, one guarantee covering four more departments.

6. Skipping the Receipt With a Registered VIC Card

Harris Teeter will refund a purchase without a receipt, but only through your VIC card.

That card has to be registered for more than 30 days before Harris Teeter will accept it as proof of purchase, per its refund policy.

The name on the card also has to match the driver’s license or other government ID you hand over at the counter.

Open a new VIC card the same week you need a refund, and the card can’t vouch for you yet.

Wait out the 30 days, and the card works exactly like a receipt would.

7. Trading a Refund for a Replacement

Harris Teeter treats its store-brand pantry items differently from the premium meat lines.

Didn’t like a box of H.T. Traders crackers or a jar of Harris Teeter pasta sauce?

You don’t just get a refund.

You also get a free replacement, a like item you choose yourself, inside a 60-day window from the purchase.

It’s two things, not one.

Harris Teeter names this its yourplus guarantee, and it covers the yourtot, yourbaby, yourpet, and yourhome lines alongside H.T. Traders and plain Harris Teeter-branded groceries.

8. Skipping the Price Match, Taking the Coupon

Harris Teeter doesn’t match a competitor’s shelf price, no matter how many flyers you bring to the register.

It won’t budge.

That isn’t a line its posted coupon policy spells out; shoppers who’ve tried it consistently report the same answer at the register.

What that same coupon policy will take is a local competitor’s paper manufacturer coupon for cents or money off a single item.

A shopper can bring as many of those as they like.

It will also take a circular or direct-mail coupon for money off your whole order, capped at one per customer per day.

Which competitors count is a call each Harris Teeter store’s management team makes, so a coupon that works across town might not work at your regular store.

Fuel Points Beyond the Register

Harris Teeter’s Fuel Points program pays out in more places than the checkout lane.

A prescription filled at the pharmacy earns 50 Fuel Points on its own, and a 90-day fill earns 150.

Gift card purchases count double toward that same monthly balance, though a Harris Teeter Gift Card itself doesn’t qualify.

It has no limit.
