5 Things Floridians Can Buy at Publix That Are Grown or Caught in Florida
Fall is a busy time for Florida’s farms and fisheries.
Stone crab season reopens this month, and strawberry plants are going in the ground.
Here’s what Floridians can buy at Publix that’s actually grown or caught in the state.
1. Stone Crab Claws
Publix lists stone crab claws under Florida on its USA-Sourced Seafood page.
Harvesters keep only the claws.
However, claws can’t come off egg-bearing females.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says stone crabs can grow them back, though regrowth takes a lot of energy.
Stone crab season reopens each Oct. 15.
Traps must come out of the water within five days after the season closes.
Check your store’s seafood case before you plan a stone crab dinner, since Publix says its seafood varieties are subject to seasonality.
2. Pink Shrimp
You can pick up jumbo Florida Pink Shrimp at Publix, 16/20 shrimp per pound, frozen.
Publix’s listing calls that shrimp wild, and it also lists pink shrimp as frozen or previously frozen seafood from Florida.
Florida’s west coast supplies over 75 percent of the U.S. harvest, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Pink shrimp are often called an annual crop.
Pink shrimp usually live less than two years.
NOAA describes the taste as flavorful and sweet, with a tender texture.
Pink shrimp are available year-round, with peaks in the winter.
If you’re wondering about the wild catch, the pink shrimp stocks are not overfished and not subject to overfishing.
3. Pixie Sweet Strawberries
Publix said in March 2025 that in-season Florida-fresh strawberries are available in its produce department.
In a page last updated in January 2024, Wish Farms says it supplies Publix berries in select Florida and Tennessee locations and in four other states.
Its Florida-grown berries come out of Plant City and Duette from late November until April.
A University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences review says Florida’s berries are harvested from November through April or May.
Strawberry plants go in the ground in September and October, ahead of that November start.
If you’re shopping in October, that November harvest start is still ahead.
One bloom takes about 21 days to become a ripe berry.
Strawberries cover about 14,000 acres across Hillsborough, Polk and Manatee counties.
Publix is right down the road from the grower’s headquarters.
If you don’t see them at your store, ask your Publix produce manager.

Yellowtail snapper is one of more than 30 fresh varieties Publix lists under Florida, alongside amberjack, mutton snapper and pompano.
Publix says it sources fresh fish and seafood from locations in the United States such as Florida and Alaska.

To tell whether your fillet is sourced in the States, look for USA on the packaging or product sign.
NOAA says U.S. wild-caught yellowtail snapper is available fresh year-round.
Publix's seafood varieties may not be available year-round.
Both can be true.
The South Atlantic and Gulf stock of yellowtail snapper is not overfished.
NOAA calls yellowtail one of Florida's most popular sport and food fish, especially in the Florida Keys and southeastern Florida.
5. Bluehouse Salmon
You can buy Bluehouse salmon fillets at Publix under a name that includes both Fresh from Florida and Farmed.
The fish you're buying is farmed, not caught.
Atlantic Sapphire, the company behind Bluehouse, says it raises its salmon in a land-based Bluehouse in Homestead.
Its salmon are raised 100 percent on land.
In 2020, Publix began offering Bluehouse salmon in 269 of its 1,255 stores, mostly in the Miami area, SeafoodSource reported.
