6 Documents Illinoisans Need to Renew a Driver’s License After 75
Your driver’s license is the card you carry everywhere and rarely think about.
That changes when renewal time comes once you’re 75.
These are the documents Illinoisans need in order to renew their driver’s license after their 75th birthday.
Note: This is general information, not legal advice. Licensing rules and fees are subject to change, so confirm the current requirements with the Illinois Secretary of State.
Illinois Driver’s License Renewal Documents
The documents you bring to renew a driver’s license over 75 depend on which card you want.
The Secretary of State says a standard license or ID doesn’t need the extra documents a REAL ID does.
A first REAL ID means a visit to a Driver Services facility, with documents that prove your identity, Social Security number, residency and signature.
A REAL ID shows a gold star in the upper right corner.
Already have a REAL ID?
Once you hold one, you may renew by mail or online if you qualify for the state’s Safe Driver Renewal program.
A Renewal Letter Instead of Documents
A renewal letter from the Secretary of State can let you skip the counter.
Illinois Legal Aid Online says the letter’s personal identification number (PIN) or Renewal Authorization Number lets you renew online, but without one, you usually renew in person.
Your age decides the rest.
You must renew in person starting at 79, a rule that replaced age 75 on July 1, 2026.
That’s a four-year reprieve.
1. Your Current License
Your current license is the document you hand over at the counter for an in-person renewal.
Illinois Legal Aid Online says you’ll likely need to make an appointment.
You also take a vision test and sit for a new photo there.
Renewing soon?
You can renew up to a year before your license expires.
2. REAL ID Proof of Identity
Proof of identity applies when you apply for the REAL ID star, not when you renew a standard card.
The Secretary of State accepts an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, or a U.S. passport or passport card.
Dates matter.
An expired passport won’t work, since every REAL ID document must be current and not expired.
A citizenship certificate makes Illinois Legal Aid Online’s list too.
3. REAL ID Proof of Social Security Number
If you collect Social Security benefits, you may already hold a document that proves your Social Security number for a REAL ID.
The Social Security Administration’s SSA-1099 form qualifies, according to Illinois Legal Aid Online.
Still working?
A W-2 form or a pay stub that shows your name and number counts, and so does an original Social Security card.
Its list covers your Illinois driver’s license record, but only if the state has already verified your number.
A Social Security award letter makes the list for the primary beneficiary only.

4. REAL ID Proof of Signature
Does your wallet already hold a document that proves your signature for a REAL ID?
A credit or debit card does, along with a cancelled check or your current Illinois license or ID, the Secretary of State's FAQ says.
You may be done here.
For a standard card, Illinois Legal Aid Online's general list goes further, with a Medicare card, mortgage or installment loan documents and a current license from another state.
5. REAL ID Proofs of Residency
A REAL ID application takes two documents that prove you live at your address, the Secretary of State's FAQ says.
Utility bills, bank statements and credit card statements qualify if their date falls within 90 days, according to Illinois Legal Aid Online.
Its list takes a lease agreement, a deed, a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy, a pension or retirement statement or official mail from a government agency.
Moved lately?
The Illinois Tollway mails violation notices to the registered owner, so an old address is one of these toll mistakes.
License Renewal After a Move
A driver's license renewal after a move takes a document such as your current license plus proof of your new address, according to Illinois Legal Aid Online.
The license covers the signature requirement, since a current Illinois driver's license is an accepted signature document.
If your address has changed, a standard renewal takes one residency document and a REAL ID renewal takes two.
6. Name-Change Papers
If your name has changed, you bring name-change documents to renew a standard license or get a REAL ID.
A marriage certificate, a court order or an amended birth certificate can link your current name to your identity documents, according to Illinois Legal Aid Online.
The Secretary of State's FAQ says the name-change document has to be certified.
Photocopies won't be accepted.
Hard Copies Only at the Counter
Your REAL ID documents can't be photocopies.
The Secretary of State requires hard-copy documents because it scans every one.
Cellphone images aren't accepted.
Printouts are fine.
You can print an image, such as a bank statement, and bring the printed copy, as long as the account numbers are visible.
The checklist itself says using it doesn't guarantee you'll get a REAL ID.
