7 Kroger Checkout Traps That Catch Kentuckians Every Week

Kroger has rules that are easy to miss, and some can cost you a little every trip.

Kentuckians who shop there can avoid most of those surprises by knowing where to look.

Here’s what to check before you pay.

1. Estimated Pickup Totals

The total at Kroger’s pickup checkout is an estimate, the chain’s pickup FAQ says.

Coupons, substitutions, taxes, weighted items and price updates can all change it.

If you accept a substitution, you’re charged the price of the substituted item.

Your bank also uses the estimate as a hold on your account for 3 to 7 business days.

The hold isn’t the final charge, but it may reduce your available funds or credit, so leave some room on your card.

2. $4.95 Pickup Fee

Kroger’s pickup FAQ lists a $4.95 service fee for orders under $35 and free pickup at $35 or more.

That makes a $34 cart cost you more than a $35 cart.

Add a $1 item to the $34 cart, and the fee is gone.

Your total drops from $38.95 to $35.

3. Once-per-Household Coupons

Most Kroger digital coupons can be loaded one time per household, the chain’s coupons FAQ says.

That limit covers your whole household, not each person in it.

A paper coupon on a pickup order can only be applied in person at pickup.

That may increase your pickup time.

4. Delivery Fees

Kroger’s delivery FAQ says fees vary based on the day and time slot you pick, and on whether Kroger Delivery or a third-party service handles the order.

Kroger replaced a fixed service fee with a range of fees based on the time slot and day of the week.

The standard delivery fee is $9.95, with an Express Delivery surcharge of $4.95 in addition.

You see the fees when you choose your slot.

Kroger Delivery asks for no tips, but third-party partners such as Instacart can accept them.

Instacart also fulfills Express Delivery orders.

Question 1 of 9

Kroger’s Pickup service carried a different name on the chain’s help pages. What was it formerly called?

5. Candy and Soft Drink Tax

Kroger shoppers in Kentucky pay no sales tax on food and food ingredients under Section 139.485 of the Kentucky Revised Statutes.

The same statute leaves candy and soft drinks, as it defines them, out of that exemption, so Kentucky taxes both.

Its definitions leave out items that contain flour and beverages with milk products or more than half fruit or vegetable juice.

If you add candy or a soft drink to your cart of groceries, Kentucky taxes that item while the food stays exempt.

6. $10 Daily Grocery Limit

If you want to pay down a Kroger grocery bill with points, the points page caps you at 1,000 points, or $10, a day.

You redeem them within your digital account before checkout.

On a $60 grocery bill, points can take $10 off at most, so you'd pay the other $50 another way.

7. SNAP Backup Cards

Online Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) orders at Kroger come with a backup card, according to the chain's SNAP page.

The card will be charged if the final total at fulfillment is higher than the original total you saw at checkout.

An Instacart-delivered substitute can cost more than the original item.

Online prices for weighted items are averages, so a weighted item's final total can exceed its original total.

Items added at curbside and promotions that no longer apply can raise the total too.

Your benefits on an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card can't pay for tips, delivery fees, ordering fees or convenience fees.

Those go on another payment method, such as a credit or debit card.

Expiring Points at the Pump

Kroger points you earn in October expire when November ends, the chain's points page says.

When you fill up at a Kroger fuel center, your savings cap at up to $1 a gallon and up to $35 per fill-up.

Every 100 points take 10 cents off a gallon, so the full $1 discount costs you 1,000 points.

You can redeem at participating fuel centers and partner stations in your area.

The Kroger Co.'s annual report says 1,731 of its 2,697 supermarkets had fuel centers as of January 31, 2026.

Gift Cards That Skip Kroger's 2-Point Rate

Kroger Family of Companies gift cards are excluded from the 2-point rate, Kroger's points page says.

All prepaid reloadable debit cards are excluded too, along with certain Visa and MasterCard variable load cards.

Most gift cards earn 2 points for every $1 spent.

Pharmacy Points

Your prescription points depend on how the prescription is funded, Kroger says.

Non-federally funded prescriptions earn 25 points, while federally funded ones earn 1 point per $1 of out-of-pocket costs.

There are also 75 points for each 90-day script.

If your prescription is federally funded, your points follow your out-of-pocket cost.

Rain Checks

Kroger's coupons FAQ says rain checks or make-good offers are available at your manager's discretion.

That leaves the decision to your manager, so a store can say no.
