7 Ways Food Lion and Harris Teeter Are Nothing Alike for North Carolinians

Food Lion and Harris Teeter are both familiar names in the Tar Heel State, but they’re far from the same.

North Carolinians who shop at both may notice the differences most at checkout, from coupons to rewards.

Here’s how the chains compare when it’s time to pay.

1. Parent Companies

Food Lion and Harris Teeter answer to different owners.

Ahold Delhaize lists Food Lion as part of its family of brands.

Kroger completed its merger with Harris Teeter in 2014, then kept the Harris Teeter name on the stores.

Harris Teeter has operated as a Kroger subsidiary since.

If you’re comparing the two, you’re comparing an Ahold Delhaize chain with a Kroger chain.

2. Store Counts

Food Lion is the bigger chain by store count.

Food Lion has more than 1,100 stores across 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.

Harris Teeter says it has more than 250 stores across seven states and Washington, D.C.

That makes Food Lion’s store count more than four times as big.

The workforces follow the same pattern, with more than 82,000 associates at Food Lion and 36,000 at Harris Teeter.

That’s a gap of more than 46,000 associates.

Harris Teeter also has 85 fuel centers, where you can redeem the fuel points you earn on groceries.

3. Headquarters

Food Lion and Harris Teeter are based in different towns.

Food Lion describes itself in a release as founded and based in Salisbury, N.C., since 1957.

Harris Teeter’s headquarters is in Matthews, according to its Sept. 15 release.

Its roots in the Charlotte area date back to 1936, and the company was formed in 1960.

That makes Harris Teeter’s roots 21 years older than Food Lion’s.

4. Rewards Payout

Food Lion and Harris Teeter don’t pay you back the same way.

Food Lion’s Shop & Earn offers personalized monthly rewards, and any digital account is enrolled automatically.

You activate the offers each month on the Shop & Earn page, then load them to your MVP loyalty card.

The rewards redeem automatically on your next trip when you scan the card.

Harris Teeter’s VIC loyalty card pays in fuel points instead.

You earn one point for every $1 you spend.

Every 100 points takes 10 cents off a gallon, up to $1 a gallon.

The discount applies to a maximum of 35 gallons in one purchase.

Points earned this month expire at the end of next month.

5. Coupon Doubling

Your paper coupons don’t work the same at Food Lion and Harris Teeter.

Food Lion’s policy says the chain doesn’t double or triple coupons.

Harris Teeter’s posted policy doubles manufacturer coupons up to 99 cents.

Read as written, a 50-cent manufacturer coupon is worth $1 at Harris Teeter and 50 cents at Food Lion.

If you load coupons digitally instead, you get face value at both chains.

How Harris Teeter’s Doubling Caps Work

Harris Teeter limits coupon doubling in several ways.

A doubled coupon can’t pass $1.98 or the item’s full price, whichever is less.

Each VIC household gets 20 doubled coupons a day under the policy.

At 99 cents of added value apiece, that tops out at $19.80 a day.

A digital manufacturer coupon can’t be combined with a paper or internet one.

6. Store Brands

Food Lion and Harris Teeter stock store brands from different parent companies.

Food Lion’s return policy lists Nature’s Promise among its private brands.

Ahold Delhaize USA’s 2019 announcement named Food Lion among the U.S. brands launching its Nature’s Promise Kids line.

Harris Teeter’s brand page lists Simple Truth and Private Selection, both of which also appear on Kroger’s brands page.

Its brands also include the Harris Teeter brand, HT Traders and Harris Teeter Organics.

So Nature’s Promise is one of Food Lion’s private brands, while Simple Truth is one of Harris Teeter’s.

7. Refund Guarantees

Food Lion and Harris Teeter back their store brands with different money-back guarantees.

Food Lion’s Double Your Money Back Guarantee covers private brand and in-store produced items, according to its return policy.

Harris Teeter pays double only on named lines.

Those are Harris Teeter Rancher, USDA Choice Reserve Angus Beef, Farmers Market, Fishermans Market and Fresh Foods Market items.

Its other store brands, such as the Harris Teeter brand and HT Traders, get the yourplus guarantee.

Under yourplus, you get a full refund plus a free replacement item.

You need an original receipt or a verified VIC card, plus a driver’s license or government ID.

Harris Teeter also posts a deadline, with refunds on products bought within the last 60 days.

Its coupon policy says rain checks expire 60 days from the date of issue.

Food Lion’s posted return policy promises an exchange or refund on any product that doesn’t meet your expectations.

No time limit is listed.

Food Lion’s rain check answer promises a rain check at the Customer Service Desk and lists no expiration.
