4 Things Floridians Take for Granted About Publix Until They Move Away
Some things only seem special once they’re gone.
Floridians who move out of state may find that a few everyday Publix touches don’t exist in their new town.
Here’s what they miss once the nearest Publix is a long drive away.
1. Free Cookies for Kids
That figure comes from a Publix corporate newsroom story dated July 30, 2026, titled A sweet tradition shared by generations.
The tradition dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Publix began offering free cookies to children.
For many young shoppers, a stop at the bakery is now an expected part of the trip.
Publix isn’t alone, though.
If you move near a Harris Teeter, you may find the same treat, since that chain brought back free sugar cookies for kids at all its stores in January 2024.
2. Carryout Without a Tip
Publix’s carryout policy says its customer service includes taking your groceries to your vehicle.
The policy adds a request not to tip.
3. Free Seafood Steaming
Publix’s seafood department offers a complimentary seasoning and steaming service.
The seasonings include Old Bay, Cajun, lemon pepper and lemon herb.
Your Publix store may offer additional seasoning options.
Publix’s fresh fish ordering page says, “Every fish in our fresh seafood case, including our fresh salmon, is never frozen.”

4. Double Hand-Breaded Tender Subs
Publix's deli page says a Publix Chicken Tender Sub is made with double hand-breaded chicken tenders.
You can order a Chicken Tender Sub or a Mojo Pork Sub on a freshly baked roll from the Bakery.
You can also order ahead to have it ready when you arrive.
Wing sauces include Caribbean Jerk, Garlic Parmesan, Korean Barbecue, Spicy Gold, Sweet Home Sriracha, and mild or hot Buffalo.
If you order ahead, in-store pickup is available to you without any additional fees or charges.
The catch is that if any item in your basket is ineligible for online payment, Publix says the entire order must be paid in the store.
Sample Slices at the Deli
The Publix deli page for sliced meats and cheeses invites you to ask for a taste: "Want to sample a slice? Just ask!"
The deli will custom slice your order exactly to your liking.
You can also order sliced meats and cheeses online for pickup.
Refunds Without a Receipt
Publix says it may be able to look up your receipt if you paid with a card or entered your phone number at checkout.
When you bring an item back with a receipt, you get a full refund in the form of your original payment.
If you have no receipt, you may need to identify yourself as a Club Publix member or show a government-issued photo ID.
In that case, Publix gives you credit in the form of a Publix gift card.
Refunds can also be limited based on misuse, or where prohibited by law.
Check Cashing and Coin Counting
Publix cashes personal and payroll checks at all stores, according to its customer service FAQ.
You need a driver license, a state-issued photo identification card or military identification.
Publix sells money orders at all stores, but it doesn't cash them.
Publix's financial services page says your coins can go through a coin sorting machine and come back as a receipt you redeem for cash at Customer Service.
Fees may apply.
Stock Only Associates Can Buy
Publix says its stock isn't publicly traded and is made available for sale only to current Publix associates and members of its board of directors.
The National Center for Employee Ownership ranks Publix first on its Employee Ownership 100, with 260,000 employees.
The list covers companies that are at least 50% employee-owned.
How BOGO Rules Split by State
Publix's FAQ says some states let you buy one promotional item at half price, while other states make you buy both items.
Florida is in the second group.
Buy two in Florida and the second item rings up at $0.00.
Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia let you buy one item at half price.
Say a BOGO item costs $4: under either rule, that works out to $2 for each item you take home.
Where Publix Doesn't Reach
Publix's store locator lists Cottonwood Corners in Dothan, Alabama, as the closest store to ZIP code 32446 in Marianna.
It's 26 miles away.
Marianna sits in Jackson County, Florida.
Would you cross a state line for your weekly shop?
The next two Dothan stores, Northside Mall and Westway, are each 30 miles away.
The closest Publix inside Florida is Panama City Centre, 48 miles from that ZIP code.
