6 Big Differences Between Wegmans and ShopRite Every New Jerseyan Should Know
Two grocery stores can look alike from the parking lot and work very differently inside.
New Jerseyans who shop at both Wegmans and ShopRite run into rules that don’t match from one store to the next.
Here’s how the two compare on the details that affect your cart.
1. Online Prices
Wegmans says its online prices stay about 15% above its in-store prices, which includes the cost of shopping your order.
ShopRite goes the other way.
Its ordering page says it offers the same prices in-store and online, under both its pickup and delivery sections.
If you buy a $100 basket in the store, the same items would total about $115 from Wegmans online.
Wegmans also lists a delivery fee for shoppers without an Instacart+ membership, plus bag and heavy order fees.
ShopRite’s delivery fees vary by store, and you see the fee when you choose a time slot.
2. Price-Error Guarantees
ShopRite’s ScanRite policy says you get one of the item free, up to $10, if it scans higher than the shelf price.
If the shelf price is more than $10, ShopRite charges you the correct price and takes $10 off your purchase.
You have up to 7 days from the date of purchase to bring your receipt back to the store for the adjustment.
Wegmans’ price accuracy pledge says it won’t charge more than the shelf, sale or advertised price, with different terms listed for Massachusetts and the Greater Buffalo Area.
If you’re overcharged, you get the difference plus $1.
Keep your receipt.
What ShopRite’s ScanRite Doesn’t Cover
ShopRite’s ScanRite policy lists items prohibited by law as exclusions, such as milk (except in Maryland and Connecticut), tobacco and pharmacy products, alcoholic beverages and postage stamps.
It also leaves out pricing you see on shoprite.com, the mobile app and the online circular.
Items whose shelf prices the store manager judges to have been switched or altered aren’t covered either.
The same goes for items whose price information is key-entered incorrectly.
Pricing errors from power failures or events beyond the store’s control are excluded too.
3. Coupon Rules
ShopRite doesn’t accept coupons shown as a bar code on your phone or any other electronic device.
Its digital coupons have to be loaded onto your Price Plus Club card before you use them.
If you clip at Wegmans, the store doubles manufacturer coupons with a face value of 99 cents or less.
ShopRite’s coupon policy says only that some stores may double print coupons, so you should check your store.
Wegmans doesn’t accept internet coupons over $4.99.
4. Rain Checks
ShopRite rain checks are good for 60 days, at any ShopRite store where the item is regularly available.
Wegmans gives you a raincheck good for 30 days.
Each ShopRite raincheck may be limited to 4 of any sale item.
ShopRite limits rain checks to one per customer, per item, per promotional week.
Items advertised as limited quantities or while supplies last don’t qualify for one at ShopRite.

5. Store Footprint
Wegmans lists nine New Jersey stores: Bridgewater, Cherry Hill, Hanover, Manalapan, Montvale, Mt. Laurel, Ocean, Princeton and Woodbridge.
Wegmans has more than one hundred stores across nine states.
That puts nine of those stores in your state.
ShopRite says it has nearly 280 supermarkets across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland.
6. Store Ownership
Wakefern, the cooperative behind ShopRite, describes itself as the largest retailer-owned cooperative in the United States, with 45 member companies that independently own and operate its supermarkets.
The ShopRite that opened at Edgewater Commons on September 19, 2026, belongs to Inserra Supermarkets, a family-owned company that NJBIZ reports is a member of the Wakefern cooperative.
A Wakefern subsidiary, ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc., also operates a smaller group of ShopRite stores.
If you shop at more than one ShopRite, each store may be run by a different member company.
Wegmans calls itself a family company headquartered in Rochester, N.Y., and one of the largest private companies in the U.S.
Ordering Ahead
Wegmans lets you place a Meals 2GO order up to 40 days before pickup, with 24 hours' notice required for cakes and most catering.
Plan early.
Meals 2GO requires full payment in advance.
ShopRite's Order Express app FAQ says you pay for your deli order at the store during checkout.
You can cancel a Meals 2GO order up to 24 hours before pickup or delivery through the app or meals2GO.com.
If you cancel with less than 24 hours' notice and the order has already been prepared, you may be charged for some or all of it.
At ShopRite, call the store as soon as possible if you want to cancel a deli order.
Order Express services vary by location.
What Each Store Says About Returns
ShopRite's refund policy covers returns of non-perishable items within 30 days and perishable items within 7 days of purchase.
Perishable returns are also subject to manager's discretion.
If you don't have your receipt, ShopRite will use your Price Plus Club card to verify your purchase.
Wegmans' store policies page says all refunds are processed at the Service Desk, and store management can deny a refund.
Refund totals over $25 require your Shoppers Club account and a valid driver's license or equivalent.
Hold onto your receipt.
Where They Match
Wegmans lets you use Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards for SNAP benefits on wegmans.com and its app for grocery delivery and pickup orders.
ShopRite lets you use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for pickup and delivery orders, where available, in New Jersey and five other states.
