8 Precautions Marylanders Should Take When Shopping at Giant

You’re standing in the Giant parking lot, squinting at your receipt to see whether each digital coupon you clipped came off.

By the time you spot a missing discount, the cart’s already in your trunk.

It’s too late to ask.

Here are some smart precautions Marylanders should take to help protect their money and Giant rewards.

1. Flexible Rewards Expiration

Giant Flexible Rewards points can go toward gas, Grocery Savings or Special Rewards, but they expire on the last day of the month after you earn them.

Points earned on January 1 expire on February 28 in a non-leap year.

No store gets everything right, but we’d still put that date on your calendar, since unused points aren’t refundable.

You designate points toward any of those three in your online account, and you can split them between categories.

Giant’s page says these offers are available only if you have an account and opt into Flexible Rewards.

Once you designate points, they have to be redeemed in that category, so choose before you confirm.

At this time, you can’t redeem Grocery Savings or Special Rewards on Giant Pickup or Giant Delivers orders.

If you shop online, weigh that before you designate points toward either.

2. Gas Points Left Undesignated

At a Giant pump, every 100 points is worth 10 cents per gallon, with a maximum of $1.50 off per gallon for up to 20 gallons.

You must designate points to gas through your online account before you go to the pump.

You can redeem them at Giant gas stations and participating Shell stations.

Giant says to allow up to 24 hours for your points and savings to appear, so designate the day before you fill up.

If you’re switching from the older Gas Rewards program, Giant can’t round points that aren’t an even 100 up to the next 100.

That means 540 Gas Rewards points get you 50 cents off per gallon, and the other 40 points go unused.

3. Clipped Digital Coupons

Giant won’t let you combine a digital coupon with a paper manufacturer coupon for the same item, so you have to choose one.

If you return an item you got a digital coupon discount on, Giant won’t add that coupon back to your account for another use.

Once you load a coupon, you can’t remove it from your card manually.

Giant takes it off after you redeem it or it expires.

Each coupon shows its expiration date, and the dates differ from coupon to coupon.

What Counts Toward a Giant Coupon Minimum

Some Giant digital coupons carry a minimum purchase, and you have to meet it after your other coupon savings and any credits from promotions come off.

Excluded purchases include alcohol, tobacco, fuel and prescriptions or co-payments, so none of those count toward your minimum.

The list also takes in gift cards, postage stamps, lottery tickets and sales tax.

4. Rain Check Deadlines

Giant gives you 30 days from the issue date to use an online rain check price.

When a sale item in your online order is out of stock, Giant can issue an electronic rain check.

It does that by placing the item back in your cart at the sale price.

After day 30, the rain check price no longer applies.

Look through your cart for any item Giant placed back in, and buy it before the 30 days end.

5. Online Order Edit Deadlines

Giant lets you update an online order in many cases until the night before pickup or delivery.

After the store starts preparing your order, you can’t change it.

Adding new items then creates a new cart and a new order when you check out.

If you cancel an order and keep the items in your cart, Giant reprices them at current prices and sales.

Bad weather can change an order too, since stores may close and Giant may have to reschedule your Pickup or Delivery order.

Giant’s Customer Care department may deliver an automated call to the contact phone number it has on record for you, so check that number in My Account.

6. GiantPass Auto-Renewals

A GiantPass membership renews automatically, and you can cancel renewals at any time.

You change your plan or cancel your next renewal in the GiantPass area of My Account.

Plan changes and cancellations take effect after your current membership expires.

7. Bag Charges

Giant may charge bag fees based on local laws, depending on where you shop, pick up or have your order delivered.

Where no state or local ordinance requires a bag fee, Giant may add a 10-cent taxable charge per bag used to your Pickup or Delivery order.

Giant says the fee will be on your final receipt.

Separately, Montgomery County taxes carryout bags at retailers, a county charge that rose from 5 cents to 10 cents on January 1, 2026.

The county tax doesn’t apply when you bring a reusable bag or don’t use a carryout bag.

So at a Montgomery County Giant, bring a reusable bag.
