8 Precautions You Should Take Before Your Next Dollar Tree Run in Florida
A quick Dollar Tree run can be easy on the budget, as long as you know what to watch for.
Floridians who shop on autopilot can end up with surprises at the register or back at home.
Here are the precautions worth taking at Dollar Tree, many of which are wise to follow at any store.
1. Checking Food Recalls
Dollar Tree drew an FDA warning letter in June 2024 over recalled WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches.
The recall was over elevated lead levels.
Dollar Tree failed to adequately remove the pouches from its shelves when the maker recalled them.
Public health officials in many states kept seeing the pouches on those shelves for weeks and months afterward.
So before food for your kids goes in your cart, search the product’s name plus the word recall.
Do it in the aisle.
2. Reading Every Price Tag
Dollar Tree converted or added about 710 stores to its multi-price format in the quarter that closed August 1, 2026.
The company’s annual report says the majority of its products cost $1.25, and 85% of products in the average store cost $2.00 or less.
Fortune reported in March 2024 that Dollar Tree raised its top price from $5 to $7.
If you’re budgeting by counting the cheap items, keep a running total on your phone instead.
Add as you go.
3. Doing the Unit Math
Florida no longer has a unit-pricing law (Senate Bill 700 repealed it in 2025), and the old one applied only to stores that chose to post unit prices.
That leaves roughly 15% of products in the average store above $2.
Run your numbers on those pricier packages first.
Divide each price by its ounces or count, then compare your two answers.
4. Comparing Package Sizes
Dollar Tree customizes packaging, product sizes and package quantities, according to its annual report.
That means the box in your hand may not match the one in your memory.
Federal packaging law requires a net quantity declaration on the label.
Find that line on both packages before you pick one.
5. Budgeting for Candy and Soft Drink Tax
Dollar Tree’s candy aisle sits on the taxable side of Florida’s food exemption.
Florida exempts many foods from sales tax, but the statute leaves out candy and soft drinks sold in cans or similar containers.
Cleaning supplies and party goods aren’t covered by the food exemption either.
So before you roll a cart in, add 6% to your running total for every taxable item.
Florida Sales Tax on Candy and Soft Drinks
Dollar Tree customers in Florida pay the state’s 6% sales tax on taxable items.
Many counties add a local surtax on top, and the Florida Department of Revenue lists county rates on a form it updates every November.
On $20 of candy and canned soft drinks, the 6% state tax alone adds $1.20 before any county surtax.
6. Checking Date Labels
Dollar Tree sells frozen and refrigerated food, according to its annual report, so the date on your package matters.
The USDA says product dating isn’t required by federal regulations, except for infant formula.
A “best if used by” date shows when a product has its best flavor or quality, and it isn’t a purchase or safety date.
Baby formula works differently: Federal regulations require a Use-By date on it, and you shouldn’t buy or use formula after that date.
7. Recalled Items at Home
On October 1, 2026, Dollar Tree recalled about 360,500 electric balloon pumps that can overheat and cause burns.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says the firm received three overheating reports, including one with flames and one explosion.
The pumps sold at Dollar Tree stores, on dollartree.com and on doordash.com between August 2025 and July 2026.
If you bought one in that stretch, check the model number on your pump before your next run.
The recalled model is 406198, and it’s printed on the silver rating label on the bottom of the pump.
Stop using the pump immediately and return it to any Dollar Tree store for a full refund.

8. Keeping Your Receipt
The Krazy Coupon Lady reports that Dollar Tree offers an exchange or a refund to your original form of payment with a receipt.
The page was last updated in March 2024.
Without a receipt, GOBankingRates reported in December 2025 that you may only be able to exchange an item at its current price.
