Did Dawn, Kirkland, Swiffer and Febreze Just Get Smaller? Here’s What Coloradans Need to Know
Reports of smaller packages on everyday household products are circulating, and Coloradans are likely finding some at their go-to grocery stores.
The reports come from shoppers, so they don’t always show which stores are affected.
Here’s what’s been reported so far, and what it could mean for your wallet.
1. Kirkland Fabric Softener
As of Oct. 6, 2026, Costco.com lists Kirkland Signature Ultra Soft Fabric Softener at 150 fluid ounces.
A second Costco.com page, for Kirkland Signature Ultra Fresh Premium Fabric Conditioner, lists 187 fluid ounces.
That 187-ounce page shows the jug as unavailable. The 150-ounce page reads unavailable at the warehouse level too.
Costco’s business site lists a Kirkland Signature liquid fabric conditioner at 187 fluid ounces too.
It converts that to 1.46 gallons.
But the pages carry different product names. So Costco’s listings alone don’t tie one jug to the other.
Mouse Print is a consumer-advocacy site run by Edgar Dworsky.
It made that connection in its June 2026 roundup, after a reader reported the jug dropping from 187 ounces to 150.
That’s 37 ounces less.
It’s about 20%, or 1.46 gallons shrinking to about 1.17.
Costco’s website names 16 Colorado locations, including Gypsum and Timnath.
The roundup gives sizes, not prices. So it can’t say what each ounce costs.
What Kirkland’s Smaller Jug Does to the Math
Costco’s Kirkland jug fits a formula the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the government’s price tracker, uses on shrinking packages.
The formula divides the price by the size. So a smaller size at the same price counts as a price increase.
Here is an example. A 64-ounce half-gallon of vanilla ice cream costs $5.99. Then it becomes a 60-ounce tub at $5.99. The cost of each ounce rises 6.7%.
Now run that formula on the Kirkland jug. If the price held steady, going from 187 ounces to 150 would make each ounce cost about 25% more.
Say the jug cost $20. That’s about 11 cents an ounce at 187 ounces and about 13 cents at 150.
To see whether the price held, divide what you paid by the ounces on the label. Then compare it with an older purchase.
2. Dawn Platinum
Mouse Print’s June 2026 roundup says the new Dawn Platinum bottle went from 32 ounces to 30, and that retailer listings show both sizes.
It doesn’t name a reader or a retailer for that one.
Walmart.com lists a 32.7-fluid-ounce bottle of the Fresh Rain scent as of Oct. 6, 2026.
Food Lion’s grocery listing shows the same scent at 30 ounces.
By Walmart’s figure, the gap is 2.7 ounces, about 8%. Counting from 32 ounces, it’s 2 ounces, about 6%.
Either way, the new bottle is a bit smaller and will clean fewer dishes.
At an unchanged price, 30 ounces in place of 32.7 would mean about 9% more for each ounce.
3. Febreze Air Mist
Mouse Print’s roundup credits a reader with a tip about Febreze spray cans going from 8.8 ounces to 8.1.
No scent or product line is named.
The drop is 0.7 ounces, about 8%. At an unchanged price, each ounce would cost about 9% more.
One scent, Gain Original in Febreze Air Mist, shows both sizes on retailer pages.
As of Oct. 6, 2026, Hannaford’s grocery site lists it at 8.8 ounces.
WebstaurantStore’s case listing shows 8.1 ounces a can.
A grocery site and a case seller are different stores.
So the pages show both sizes, but they don’t show a change over time.

4. Swiffer Dusters
Sam's Club lists two Swiffer duster kits, one with 28 refills and one with 24.
The 28-refill kit reads unavailable as of Oct. 6, 2026. The 24-refill kit is the one offered for shipping, pickup and delivery.
A Mouse Print reader reported a Swiffer Dusters box dropping from 28 dusters to 24.
That's four fewer dusters, about 14%. At an unchanged price, each duster would cost about 17% more.
Both kits include a handle, but the 24-refill kit lists a short one.
Sam's lists them as separate items, so the pages alone don't show one replacing the other.
What BLS Tracking Shows
BLS tracks downsizing and upsizing in its Consumer Price Index sample each month.
Its February 2023 analysis put the average yearly effect of downsizing on all commodities and services at 0.01%.
That overall effect is tiny.
But that 0.01% covers every commodity and service in the index. So it says little about any one shelf at your store.
If you buy the same softener or dish soap every month, a cut to your brand still shows up in your budget.
Downsizing does affect the indexes for item categories where size cuts are common.
Household paper products had more upsizing and downsizing than any other category in the BLS sample, with 716 reports from 2015 to 2021.
