9 Publix Shopping Mistakes Many Florida Snowbirds Make

Coming back to Florida each winter can feel like slipping into an old routine.

But Publix has changed a few things since some snowbirds last shopped there, and the store you remember may not match the one you walk into.

Here are the slip-ups that can catch returning snowbirds off guard.

1. Paying With the Publix App

Publix Pay is gone.

The payment option inside the Publix app ended on March 19, 2026.

The tool let shoppers save cards and scan a code in the store.

At the register, you can still pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or gift cards stored in your wallet.

2. Counting on Free Prescriptions

Publix ended its free prescription program, which it launched in 2007, on June 1, 2022.

The program had covered common drugs, including amoxicillin, metformin, lisinopril and amlodipine.

Any free amoxicillin you remember from an earlier winter came before that June.

3. Buying a Single BOGO Item

Publix buy-one-get-one, or BOGO, deals in Florida require you to buy two items, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Folgers ground coffee was on the BOGO list in late September 2026, but buying just one wouldn’t have gotten you the offer.

Publix stores in other states let you take 50% off just one item.

If that’s the version you learned at a Publix back home, Florida stores still want the second item.

4. Skipping Club Publix

Club Publix is a free loyalty program, and Publix says digital coupons are available to anyone who has an account.

Members see the weekly ad a day early and get a birthday treat.

Club Publix Perk Limits

Club Publix perks can’t be redeemed on alcohol, tobacco, lottery items, money services or postage stamps.

Gift cards, prescriptions, taxes and fees are excluded, too.

To get the birthday treat, add your birth date to your account at least 10 days before your birthday.

5. Assuming One Weekly Ad Start Day

Publix runs two weekly ad cycles.

Publix posts Wednesday-through-Tuesday ads around midnight Eastern Time on Wednesday morning, and Thursday-through-Wednesday ads on Thursday morning.

Posting may take several hours, so you can’t count on the ad being up at midnight.

6. Ordering Delivery Without Checking Prices

Publix’s Instacart FAQ says the “increased price” covers the costs of Instacart providing the overall service, including shopping for your order.

Item prices appear on the website, so you can compare a few staples with the shelf tag before you order.

Printed and digital coupons you’ve clipped to your Club Publix account aren’t redeemable through Instacart.

7. Showing Coupons on Your Phone

Publix doesn’t accept coupons that you present on a phone or other device.

Copied and percent-off coupons are out, too.

Clip digital coupons to your Club Publix account instead, then enter your phone number at checkout.

8. Returning Without a Receipt

With your receipt, Publix says it will replace the item or give you a full refund in the form of your original payment.

Without a receipt, you may need to identify yourself as a Club Publix member or show a government-issued photo ID.

In that case, you’ll get credit in the form of a Publix gift card.

That card waits until you’re back.

If you paid with a card or entered your phone number at checkout, Publix may be able to look up your receipt.

9. Letting a Rain Check Expire

You have 30 days from the issue date to redeem a Publix rain check.

Publix says its management teams issue rain checks only for items advertised outside the store at a reduced retail price.

Any Publix location that offers the product can redeem it, not just the location that issued it.

A rain check you get before you head north expires while you’re away.

Free Seafood Steaming

At Publix, steaming and seasoning the seafood you buy is a complimentary service.

Seasonings include Lemon Pepper, Lemon Herb, Cajun and Old Bay.

Some Publix stores may offer additional seasoning options.

Coupon Limits

Publix allows up to two coupons per item, one manufacturer coupon plus one Publix or competitor coupon.

Households can redeem eight of the same coupon a day.

Publix says it’s happy to accept a coupon for a competitor’s private label product.

Publix posts a list of the competitors whose coupons it accepts in each store.

You can ask Customer Service at your Publix for that list.

Moving a Prescription

Publix’s pharmacy page says you can transfer prescriptions and refill quickly without an account.

To move a prescription, have the medication name and the Rx number from your other pharmacy’s label ready, or call your local Publix Pharmacy.

In-Store Pickup Orders

Publix asks you to place a platter or cake order 24 hours in advance.

You can order platters, cakes and subs this way.

You can cancel platters and cakes up to 24 hours before your scheduled pickup time, and subs more than 2 hours before.

Your cart stays saved for 30 days if you're logged in to your Club Publix account.

Without a login, it stays saved for 24 hours on the same device.

If an item you order is on sale, Publix's site shows the sale price automatically.

You can pay now online or pay in store.

If any item in your order is ineligible for online payment, you pay for the whole order in the store.
