Publix vs. Aldi: 8 Differences Floridians Should Know Before Choosing Where to Shop

If your local Aldi opened in the last few years, it may have been a Winn-Dixie first.

Inside, most of what’s on Aldi’s shelves is exclusive to Aldi, and that’s only one way it differs from Publix.

Here are the differences between Publix and Aldi that Floridians should know before choosing where to shop.

1. Deli Counters

Publix has a deli counter where the staff will custom slice your order exactly to your liking.

Aldi says its stores don’t have delis, but it does sell fresh meats and cheeses.

Publix’s deli page tells you to just ask if you want to sample a slice.

2. Pharmacies

Publix Pharmacy administers vaccines for shingles, pneumonia and more.

Ask your pharmacy about the vaccine you need before you go.

With a Publix Pharmacy account, you can manage and pay for your prescriptions online and get refill reminders.

The account unlocks features such as delivery and curbside pickup.

Aldi, by contrast, tells shoppers they won’t see add-on services like pharmacies in its stores.

3. Membership and Rewards

Club Publix is a free loyalty program.

You enter your phone number at checkout so any clipped digital coupons or perks apply to your purchase.

Members can see the weekly ad a day early.

Aldi says you don’t need a membership to shop there.

Aldi offers no rewards cards.

4. Weekly Deals

Each week, Aldi releases a new selection of Aldi Finds, limited premium items that aren’t always food.

Aldi says they go fast, so check its weekly ad or sign up for its e-newsletter to keep up.

Publix’s weekly deals include BOGOs, which are buy-one-get-one-free offers.

In Florida, you must buy two of the same qualified items to get the BOGO discount, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Say a box of Cheerios has a $6 tag (a made-up price): two boxes cost $6 in all, or $3 each.

Publix’s weekly ad runs Wednesday through Tuesday or Thursday through Wednesday, depending on your store.

5. Rain Checks

Publix issues rain checks only for items advertised outside the store at a reduced price.

A Publix rain check must be redeemed within 30 days and covers up to eight single items or four deals.

Publix customers request a rain check at the Customer Service counter.

Aldi says it can’t offer rain checks on Aldi Find items.

Aldi can’t place holds on them, either.

Visit a store as soon as possible after a product goes on sale.

Aldi Finds Price Adjustments

Aldi makes a price adjustment on Aldi Find items within 14 days of your purchase.

You take your receipt to the store where you bought the product.

The store manager makes the adjustment.

Seasonal items and items available on a regular basis don’t qualify.

6. Coupons

Publix limits you to two coupons per item, a manufacturer coupon plus either a Publix or a competitor coupon.

Digital coupons need a Club Publix account.

Aldi says it’s unable to accept manufacturer coupons.

Aldi doesn’t offer online coupons.

A coupon you find online or on social media isn’t a legitimate Aldi coupon.

7. Satisfaction Guarantees

The Publix Guarantee covers any purchase that doesn’t give you complete satisfaction.

Publix will refund the full purchase price on request.

Aldi’s Twice as Nice Guarantee covers its private-label products.

If you bring back a private-label product you don’t like, Aldi will return your money and replace it.

8. Ingredient Standards

Nearly 90% of the items on Aldi shelves are exclusive brands.

Aldi plans to remove 44 more ingredients from its private-label foods by the end of 2027.

That raises its restricted ingredient list from 13 to 57.

The additions include select artificial preservatives, colors, flavors and sweeteners.

At Publix, a Made Without shelf tag marks products made without certain preservatives, flavors and colors.

Those products may contain colors from natural sources.

You can spot the tag on the shelf.

Winn-Dixie Conversions

Grocery Dive reported in August 2025 that Aldi had announced nearly 50 Florida locations over the previous eight months.

All but one were former Winn-Dixie locations.

If your local Aldi opened in the last few years, it may have been a Winn-Dixie first.

Delivery and Curbside

Publix delivery and curbside orders run through Instacart.

Publix says the higher online prices cover Instacart’s cost of running the service.

Coupons you clipped to your Club Publix account aren’t redeemable through Instacart.

Aldi lists delivery partnerships with Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Aldi says trained team members handpick every curbside order.

Beer and Wine

Aldi tells you to check its store locator to see if your store carries beer and wine.

Alcohol sales at grocery stores aren’t permitted by law in certain states and municipalities.

Publix sells beer and wine in its grocery stores and runs separate Publix Liquors stores, with over 350 locations across the Southeast.

Cart Quarters

To unlock an Aldi cart, you insert a quarter.

You get it back when you return the cart to the corral.

Aldi says the 25-cent deposit saves it money because it doesn’t have to hire extra staff to collect carts.

Customer Satisfaction Scores

If you compare the two, Publix scored an 84 in the 2026 supermarket results from the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).

Aldi scored an 81.

Trader Joe's topped the supermarket list at 86.

ACSI based the 2026 results on data collected from January through December 2025.
