Kroger Closed 6 Fred Meyer and QFC Stores in Washington. Here’s the List

You can pick up a prescription and a week of groceries in one stop, until the store isn’t there anymore.

For some Washingtonians, that day has already come.

Here’s the list of Fred Meyer and QFC stores Kroger closed in Washington.

1. Mill Creek

QFC’s Mill Creek store, at 926 164th Street Southeast in the Mill Creek Square shopping center, had a closing date of September 3, 2025.

Kroger cited the lease.

If you worked there, you were one of 76 employees listed in a state filing, and Kroger said it would offer all of them a chance to transfer.

If you shopped there, you’ll find the store on Fast Company’s list of stores closed since Kroger’s 2025 announcement.

2. Tacoma Pacific Avenue

Tacoma’s first Fred Meyer closure was the Pacific Avenue store, at 7250 Pacific Avenue in the South End.

Fred Meyer tied the closure to a broader effort to improve efficiency.

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 367 said the closing would disproportionately affect low-income seniors and working families.

The News Tribune reported the union’s account that many of those shoppers walk or take the bus to shop or pick up prescriptions.

The closing affected 226 workers, with layoffs planned for late September 2025.

By October 14, 2025, the store had already closed.

If you walked or rode the bus there, you were among the shoppers the union said would feel it most.

Ideas for filling the gap included mobile food trucks or possibly Tacoma Farmer’s Market involvement in the interim.

If you live in the South End, those ideas came up at a city committee meeting.

3. Kent East Hill

Fred Meyer’s East Hill store, at 10201 Southeast 240th Street in Kent, closed in October 2025.

Kroger had set the closing for October 17.

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 3000 put the store’s staff at about 203 people.

At a Kent Chamber roundtable, residents worried the neighborhood would become a food desert, since the store sold groceries, clothing, home goods and prescriptions under one roof.

If you need a pharmacy now, the roundtable pointed to a CVS at 26301 104th Avenue Southeast.

A nearby Walgreens had also closed, in early September, which leaves fewer pharmacy choices on the hill.

If you shopped there for groceries, the Kent Chamber’s CEO pointed to Grocery Outlet at the roundtable for lower prices.

As of August 2025, Fred Meyer’s other Kent store was on the West Hill, at 25250 Pacific Highway South.

Question 1 of 10

Since 2012, a Washington grocery store generally needs at least how many square feet to sell spirits?

4. Everett Evergreen Way

Everett's Fred Meyer on Evergreen Way, at Casino Road, was due to close on October 18, 2025.

The city says many South Everett families relied on the store.

Everett's fare-free shuttle to Walmart was set to begin October 20.

The closest grocery store, a Safeway at Evergreen Way and 75th Street, was almost a mile north.

If you don't have a car, that distance matters.

In October 2025, Mayor Cassie Franklin made Route 12 free for six months following the closure of the Fred Meyer.

As of April 2026, Everett Transit said fares on Route 12 would return shortly after it donated a retired paratransit vehicle to a nonprofit in the Casino Road area.

The union says the zip codes of the Everett and Kent stores have household incomes below their counties' median.

5. Seattle Lake City

Fred Meyer's Lake City store, at 13000 Lake City Way Northeast in Seattle, closed in October 2025.

Kroger had set a mid-October closing date.

The closing affected 175 workers.

KNKX public radio reported it would leave the neighborhood without its only pharmacy.

A Safeway, the nearest full-service grocery store with a pharmacy, is more than a mile away.

If you filled prescriptions there, you now face a longer trip.

Seattle's adopted 2026 budget includes a $12 million increase in food access investments.

If you'd rather stay with Kroger, its list of nearby stores has options.

Those include Fred Meyer on Northwest 45th Street and Northwest 85th Street.

They also include QFC stores on Northeast 145th Street, Roosevelt Way Northeast and Holman Road Northwest.

6. Redmond

Fred Meyer's Redmond store, at 17667 Northeast 76th Street, closed in October 2025.

UFCW Local 3000 said Kroger described both Redmond and Lake City as some of the region's lowest performers in terms of sales.

If you shopped in Redmond, Kroger's list of alternatives includes QFC stores at 15800 Redmond Way and 8867 161st Avenue Northeast, plus Fred Meyer stores in Bellevue and Kirkland.

If you're wondering what became of the building, Life Time bought it, Hoodline reported in February 2026.

The price was $32 million.

Tacoma James Center, Closing Next

Fred Meyer's James Center store at 6901 South 19th Street in Tacoma will close in January 2027.

That's when its lease ends, on January 30.

The grocery workers union says Kroger declined to renew because of rising rent.

That is a different reason from the efficiency Fred Meyer cited at Pacific Avenue.

About 100 workers are affected.

Tacoma said its economic development staff was working with the landlord on what could come next.

If you fill prescriptions there, you share a worry Mayor Anders Ibsen has voiced: Residents fear a worsening food desert and trouble getting medications.

If you shop there, Fred Meyer points you to its nearby stores: Stevens on South 19th Street, University Place, and the QFC stores in Parkland and Northshore.

Stevens, also on South 19th Street, will be Fred Meyer's only remaining Tacoma store.

Theft Numbers

Kroger cited rising theft and a costly regulatory environment for closing its Kent, Everett, Lake City and Redmond stores.

Kent police case reports, obtained by the Kent Reporter, show 56 thefts at the East Hill store in 2020 and 22 through August 20, 2025.

Everett police figures reported by the Herald show shoplifting reports at the Evergreen Way store fell from 24 in 2023 to 12 in 2024.

Both counts fell.

Kent Mayor Dana Ralph said in an August 2025 statement that calls for service at the Fred Meyer had declined.

Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin said in an August statement that the store had a 36% decrease in offenses from 2023 to 2024.

If you're weighing Kroger's explanation, you can compare it with those police counts.

If you shopped either store, you can also weigh them against what you saw there.

Workers Affected

Kroger's four fall-2025 closings in Lake City, Redmond, Kent and Everett affected 703 workers, the union says.

If you worked at one of those stores, the union says its contracts require Kroger to offer you an equivalent position at a nearby store.

The contracts also tie that placement to union seniority.

Fred Meyer said affected associates would be offered positions at other stores.

If you're a UFCW 3000 grocery worker, President Faye Guenther said the union will raise these issues when it returns to the table with Kroger and Albertsons in 2027.

Kroger's 60-Store Plan

Kroger announced in June 2025 that it would close about 60 underperforming stores nationwide over 18 months.

If you're wondering how far along the plan is, Fast Company's March 2026 report said Kroger appeared to be more than halfway through it.

If you're asking about the cost, Kroger took a $100 million impairment charge in its first quarter, a charge MyNorthwest noted alongside the plan in its Mill Creek report.
