9 Precautions Iowans Should Take When Shopping at Hy-Vee
Hy-Vee plans to phase out its Perks Plus membership in early 2027.
Until then, the fine print still applies.
These are the precautions Iowans should take when shopping at Hy-Vee.
1. Card Statements After the 2019 Notice
Hy-Vee’s October 2019 payment card notice said malware searched for card data at certain fuel pumps, drive-thru coffee shops and restaurants.
The notice said card transactions at front-end checkout lanes, inside convenience stores and at pharmacies weren’t involved.
At the affected fuel pumps, drive-thru coffee shops and restaurants, the malware didn’t copy data from every card used while it was active.
Even so, Hy-Vee advised cardholders to review their payment card statements and report any charge they didn’t make to their card issuer right away.
Your statements from any card you used at the affected fuel pumps, coffee shops or restaurants before the notice came out are worth a close read.
No chain is perfect.
2. Opting Out of Data Sharing
Hy-Vee’s privacy policy says the company collects information about the purchases you make with your loyalty membership account.
From time to time, Hy-Vee shares information with data brokers, aggregators and exchanges.
Opting out is possible.
For marketing emails, use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of each message or update your email preferences in your hy-vee.com account.
The website footer has a link for opting out of the sale or sharing of your personal information.
If you live in Iowa, Minnesota or Nebraska, you can opt out of targeted advertising and the sale of your personal information.
Residents of those states can ask Hy-Vee to delete their personal information, subject to exceptions.
3. Lost Perks Cards and Rewards
Hy-Vee isn’t responsible for a lost or stolen Perks card, according to the program’s terms and conditions.
Under those terms, Hy-Vee reserves the right to modify or terminate the program or any reward at any time and without notice.
With that in mind, we’d spend your rewards while they’re offered.
If your card goes missing, report it to Hy-Vee customer care by email or phone.
4. Recall Notices
In January 2023, Hy-Vee recalled two varieties of Mealtime Beef Pot Roast Dinners because the gravy mix contained a wheat allergen that wasn’t on the ingredients label.
Buyers with a wheat sensitivity were told to dispose of the dinner or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
Hy-Vee’s June 2020 recall of its 12-ounce bagged garden salad involved possible Cyclospora contamination.
Salad buyers got the same two options.
If a Hy-Vee-brand food you’ve bought makes the news, pull up the recall notice.
Then check your fridge.
5. Aisles Online Fees
Orders on Hy-Vee’s online ordering site, Aisles Online, come with a delivery or pickup fee unless the ordering process says otherwise, according to the Terms of Sale.
Hy-Vee reserves the right to amend those fees at any time.
Item prices in your cart continue to update until you place the order, the same terms say.
That makes the fee and the total worth a last look before you place it.
If no one’s home to accept your delivery, Hy-Vee can’t deliver the order and may contact you to arrange another time.
A rescheduled delivery may carry additional charges and delivery fees.
6. Orders Canceled for Pricing Errors
If a price in your Hy-Vee cart looks like a mistake, don’t plan a dinner party around it.
Hy-Vee may cancel any order containing a pricing error at any time, during or after the ordering process.
After that, Hy-Vee has no further obligations to you.
7. Scanning Your Perks Card at Checkout
Hy-Vee’s Perks terms say you must use your Perks card at checkout to receive rewards.
Rewards you earn can’t be transferred from one Perks card to another, so the card you use at checkout matters.
Perks rewards aren’t eligible to be earned on restricted products including tobacco, postage stamps, money orders and gift-card purchases.
Additional restrictions may apply, and the store has the details.
8. Weight-Based Item Estimates
For items sold by approximate weight, Hy-Vee gives you an estimated weight and price during the ordering process.
That’s only an estimate.
You’re charged for the actual weight when your order is assembled, according to the Terms of Sale.
So budget for a final charge that’s above or below the estimate.
When Hy-Vee Charges Your Card
When you shop Aisles Online, Hy-Vee charges your card once your order finishes processing on the day of delivery or pickup.
If you pay with a Hy-Vee gift card, you’ll need a valid credit card to cover any amount beyond the card’s limit.
9. Canceling Perks Plus Before Renewal
Hy-Vee’s Perks Plus membership, previously known as Hy-Vee Plus, is now offered only as a monthly membership, according to its membership terms.
That’s $8.25 a month, plus applicable taxes.
Monthly memberships renew automatically and are billed every 30 days.
You can cancel any time by editing your account preferences on hy-vee.com.
If you cancel before the next 30-day charge, you won’t be billed for another month.
As of October 29, 2026, Hy-Vee no longer offers new trial or promotional memberships.
If you started a trial earlier, the membership fee is charged automatically when it ends unless you cancel first.
Hy-Vee plans to phase out Perks Plus in early 2027.
It will email members at least 30 days before monthly memberships end, and it won’t charge for any period after that date.
If Hy-Vee’s end date for monthly memberships falls partway through a billing period you’ve already paid for, it will refund the unused portion of that monthly fee.

Taking a Complaint Further
If a Hy-Vee problem goes unresolved, you can file a complaint with the Iowa Attorney General's office.
The office asks for a clear summary of what happened, plus receipts, statements, screenshots or emails.
If you can't complete the online complaint form, you can print one or ask the office to mail you a copy.
Online submissions can include up to three attachments, so choose the Hy-Vee receipts and emails that show what happened.
According to the office, a complaint doesn't guarantee an investigation or enforcement action.
The attorney general can't act as your private lawyer, either.
