What Documents Do You Need for a REAL ID in Virginia in 2026?

A Virginia REAL ID application takes five things: Proof of your identity, proof you’re legally allowed to be in the country, and proof of your Social Security number.

Add two documents proving your Virginia address, plus proof of any legal name change.

If you miss one, you’ll leave empty-handed.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) processes every one of those applications in person, at one of its 75 customer service centers across the state.

Note: This is general information, not legal advice. Licensing rules and fees are subject to change, so confirm the current requirements with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Proof of Identity You Can Use

Virginia DMV asks every REAL ID applicant for one identity document.

An unexpired U.S. passport covers it, and so does a certified U.S. birth certificate.

A U.S. passport card works too, not just the passport book.

One document does the job.

Anyone missing both of those can check the DMV’s online Document Guide, which lists every other accepted identity document by name before the DMV visit even happens.

Proof of Legal Presence

Virginia DMV treats legal presence documents as a separate step from proving your identity.

The state needs to see that you’re a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or otherwise authorized to be in the country, under Virginia’s legal presence law.

One passport can cover both.

An Employment Authorization Document doesn’t count as legal presence proof for a REAL ID, even though Virginia accepts it for a standard credential.

First-time REAL ID applicants always show it in person.

A later renewal doesn’t ask for it again.

Proof of Your Social Security Number

Virginia DMV can often verify your Social Security number electronically, right at the counter.

If you know the number, that’s usually all it takes.

A missing card rarely matters.

When the number won’t verify electronically, bring a Social Security card or a W-2 form showing the full nine digits instead.

Question 1 of 9

The federal government finally started fully enforcing REAL ID at airports on what date?

Two Proofs of Virginia Residency

The DMV asks for two residency documents, not one, and that trips people up more than any other category on the list.

A utility bill works, and so does a mortgage statement or a Virginia driver's license showing your current address.

A lease agreement or a bank statement works too.

Both documents need your name and current address.

P.O. boxes don't count.

What Can Be a Printout, and What Can't

Virginia DMV requires original documents for every REAL ID category except one.

Residency proof is the exception, so a printout of an online utility bill or bank statement counts, as long as it shows your name and current Virginia address.

Every other document, identity, legal presence, your Social Security number, and any name change, has to be an original.

Virginia DMV turns away temporary documents and photocopies of those at the counter.

Proof of a Legal Name Change

Virginia DMV needs proof of the change whenever your name looks different across your documents.

A marriage certificate filed with a government agency or court works.

A divorce decree or a court order granting a legal name change works too.

A license alone won't do.

Anyone with more than one name change, through marriage, divorce, or adoption, brings a certified document for every step in the chain.

A birth certificate showing a maiden name plus a marriage certificate showing the married name is a common pairing.

What Happens if You're Missing a Document

Virginia DMV can't complete a REAL ID application with a document missing.

Every one of the DMV's 75 centers can process the application, but only in person, and only with the full stack of paperwork.

Plan around your slowest document.

DMV recommends booking an appointment one to two months before a flight or a visit to a secure federal facility.

A missing document then doesn't turn into a missed trip.

Booking ahead through the DMV's appointment system also skips the walk-in line.

Anyone who can't track down a Virginia birth or marriage certificate can request a certified replacement copy at a DMV center.

That works as long as the record was filed in Virginia.

FAQ

Quick answers to what people ask most about REAL ID documents.

What documents do you need for a REAL ID in Virginia?

One proof of identity, one proof of legal presence, proof of your Social Security number, two proofs of Virginia residency, and proof of any legal name change. Bring all of it in person, along with the $10 REAL ID fee.

How much does a Virginia REAL ID cost?

The REAL ID surcharge is a flat $10 on top of the underlying license or ID fee. A standard license renewal runs $32, so a REAL ID renewal comes to $42. A standard replacement runs $20, so a REAL ID replacement comes to $30.

Do you have to get a REAL ID in Virginia?

No. A REAL ID is optional in Virginia, and a standard license or ID still works for driving, voting, and many everyday needs. Without one, you'll need another accepted form of ID, like a passport, to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities.

How can you tell if a Virginia card is already REAL ID compliant?

A compliant card carries a star inside a circle in the top right corner. A card that reads "Federal Limits Apply" instead is the standard, non-REAL ID version.

Can you use a REAL ID from another state instead of getting a Virginia one?

No. A REAL ID doesn't transfer between states. A new Virginia resident applies again and brings the full set of documents, even with a valid REAL ID already in hand.

Does a child need a REAL ID to fly?

No. Children under 18 traveling with a companion don't need to show ID within the United States, though the adult they're traveling with still does. Airlines can set separate rules for kids.

What if your Social Security card is lost?

Try the counter first. Virginia DMV can often verify a Social Security number electronically without a physical card, and a W-2 form works as a backup if it doesn't.

Applicants renewing an existing Virginia REAL ID can often do it online, since Virginia only requires an in-person visit every other renewal cycle.

New Virginia residents get 60 days from their move to get a Virginia driver's license, REAL ID or not, before the state requires one to drive legally.
