What to Do After Moving to Tennessee: The Deadlines That Apply
Unpacking can take months, but some moving paperwork can’t wait that long.
If you’re new to Tennessee, a few tasks come with deadlines, and they’re easy to miss while you’re settling in.
Here are the dates to keep in mind so nothing slips through the cracks.
Note: This is general information, not legal advice. Licensing and registration rules and deadlines are subject to change, so confirm the current requirements with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security or your county clerk.
How Long Do You Have to Get a Tennessee Driver License?
The department’s new-resident page covers anyone who holds a license from another state, and the 30-day window runs from the day you establish residency.
Returning residents count too.
Don’t wait.
You’ll take a vision screening at a Driver Services Center as part of the transfer.
You must be able to see at least 20/40 with each eye.
You may wear contacts or glasses during the screening.
If you use corrective lenses, a restriction code is noted on your license.
When Tennessee Requires a Driving Test
You don’t retake the knowledge test or road skills test if your license is valid or hasn’t been expired for more than six months.
The vision screening still applies either way.
How Do You Book a Driver Services Center Appointment?
A Driver Services Center appointment books you a set day and time.
The department says appointments aren’t available at all Driver Services Centers.
Book ahead.
You should arrive 15 minutes early.
If you’re late, your appointment may be cancelled, and you’ll be treated as a walk-in customer.
Which Documents Does a New Resident Bring?
A new-resident transfer asks for one proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence, such as an official birth certificate or a valid, unexpired U.S. passport.
You also need two proofs of residency.
Two proofs, not one.
Acceptable examples include a current utility bill, a current bank statement, an unexpired Tennessee vehicle registration or title, and a lease with a landlord letter dated within 30 days.
If your name has changed, bring a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order that connects it to your identity documents.
You surrender your out-of-state license when you apply.
A standard license lets you give your Social Security number verbally, but a REAL ID requires documentation of it.
Do You Need a Driving Record From Your Old State?
A Tennessee license transfer from certain states comes with one more document, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) from your former state.
If you’re moving from California, Connecticut, Illinois, Nevada or West Virginia, the department’s new-resident page says you must obtain one.
Nine states are listed.
A department notice from November 2024 names the other four: Kentucky, Maine, Oklahoma and Vermont.
That requirement took effect Jan. 10, 2025.
A second 30-day clock applies: The record must have been issued within 30 days before you present it at a Driver Services Center.
The other 41 states, Tennessee included, take part in a national verification service that lets the department check driver histories electronically.
What Does a Tennessee License Cost?
You’ll pay $28 for a standard Class D license, according to the department’s fee table: $26 for the license and a $2 application fee.
That covers an eight-year license period.
Your next renewal comes eight years from the date of issuance.
County clerk partner offices add a $4 administrative fee on top of the state fees for the services they offer.
A first duplicate costs $8.
Every duplicate after that costs $12.
Is a REAL ID Required in Tennessee?
A REAL ID is optional in Tennessee, according to the department, and you carry the same documents to get one.
Since May 7, 2025, everyone needs a REAL ID or a passport to board a commercial flight within the United States.
The fee is the same.
Acceptable proof of your Social Security number includes a Social Security card, a W-2, a 1099 or a payroll check stub.
REAL ID isn’t required for driving, voting or buying alcohol.

What Is the Deadline to Register a Car in Tennessee?
The Tennessee Department of Revenue says you should register a vehicle within 30 days of moving to the state.
You file for title and registration through your local county clerk.
Bring your most current out-of-state registration and the name and address of the company you send car payments to.
If you don't have that information, bring your out-of-state title.
Your driver license comes from the Department of Safety and Homeland Security instead.
That makes two stops.
Limited exceptions to the 30-day rule include students from other states who attend school in Tennessee.
If you buy a car after you arrive, our guide to a title transfer covers that step.
When Does Tennessee Voter Registration Close?
Tennessee voter registration closes 30 days before an election, according to the Secretary of State's office.
The election calendar lists the registration deadline and early voting dates for each election.
Register early.
You show photo ID when you vote in person, and it has to come from Tennessee or the federal government.
A license from another state doesn't count.
A Tennessee driver license, a U.S. passport, a U.S. military photo ID or a Tennessee handgun carry permit with your photo all work, even if expired.

Does Tennessee Require Emissions Testing?
If you're moving from a state that tests tailpipes, you can leave that errand behind: Tennessee's vehicle emissions testing program ended in 2022.
Davidson County stopped testing on Feb. 5, 2022, and the county's website says residents titling and registering a vehicle no longer need an emissions test.
Those tests are gone.
Motorists in the other counties that ran the program, including Hamilton, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson, stopped requiring vehicle inspections in January 2022, according to local reporting.
What If Your Address Changes Again in Tennessee?
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security requires you to report any address change within 10 days of that change.
Telling the post office doesn't give the department your new address.
An address-only change through the department's e-Services costs nothing.
You'll pay a fee if you order a duplicate license with your new address.
Voting works differently.
The Secretary of State's office says your voter registration doesn't transfer from one Tennessee county to another.
If you move to a new county, you register there online or send an application to the county election commission in person or by mail.
The same 30-day cutoff before an election applies.
