10 Precautions Ohioans Should Take When Shopping at Kroger
Saving at Kroger takes more than a loyalty card these days.
Ohioans who shop there can avoid a few costly surprises by double-checking some small details.
Here’s what to keep an eye on, from the app to the checkout.
1. Checking Receipts Against Shelf Tags
Inspectors in nine Ohio jurisdictions recorded 644 incorrect prices across 389 inspections of Kroger stores from 2022 to mid-2026.
The Center for Responsible Food Business, a nonprofit advocacy group that has criticized Kroger, obtained those government records through public-records requests.
Its analysis found the errors favored Kroger nearly three times as often as they favored shoppers.
Those overcharges averaged more than 20% above shelf prices.
According to ConsumerAffairs, Kroger has pushed back against the group’s broader allegations and said store employees are empowered to address pricing concerns when shoppers bring them up.
Photograph the shelf tag on any advertised deal you’re buying, then read your receipt before you leave the store.
That photo is your proof.
Ohio’s Department of Agriculture runs a price verification program meant to make sure a posted price is accurate.
If a price still rings up wrong, you may file a complaint on any commercial Weights and Measures transaction that may be incorrect.
2. Canceling Boost Before the Trial Ends
Kroger’s Boost membership opens with a 30-day free trial, and it asks for your payment information before the trial starts.
The Boost page says that once the free trial expires, your credit or debit card will be charged for an annual membership unless you cancel before the trial period ends.
You can cancel any time before the 30-day trial ends at Membership Management.
Put the end date on your calendar the day you sign up.
What Kroger’s Boost Trial Includes
Kroger’s Boost free trial includes free delivery with a $35 order minimum, 2x Points and Boost Exclusive Coupons.
The Disney+, Hulu or ESPN+ perk comes with ads and is available only after the free trial.
Kroger’s Boost page says a household is eligible for one free trial only.
If you cancel, your current Boost benefits last until the end of your trial period.
3. Keeping a Backup Card for EBT Orders
Kroger takes Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card for pickup and delivery orders.
Its SNAP EBT page says non-SNAP eligible items, tips, delivery fees, ordering fees and convenience fees must be paid for using other payment methods, such as credit or debit cards.
Your EBT card can only be authorized by PIN entry at checkout, so Kroger can only charge the amount authorized then.
If the final total at fulfillment exceeds the original total shown at checkout, your backup card will be charged.
4. Approving Substitutions
On a Pickup or Delivery order, Kroger’s help page says you’ll be charged the price of a substituted item if you accept it.
For Pickup, your associate reviews any substitutions when they greet you.
You may refuse items you aren’t satisfied with before your order is completed and loaded into your car.
5. Checking Delivery Fees by Time Slot
Kroger’s delivery fees vary based on the day and time slot you select, and the help page lists a $9.95 standard delivery fee.
Express Delivery adds a $4.95 surcharge, in addition to the standard fee.

6. Tipping on Express Orders
Kroger's delivery help page asks you not to tip on Kroger Delivery, yet it says Instacart fulfills Express Delivery orders.
Third-party partners like Instacart can accept tips, and 100% of any tip you provide goes directly to the driver.
So before you add a tip, check which service is bringing your order.
Instacart will also refund the Express Delivery surcharge for any express order that is more than 15 minutes late.
7. Digital Coupons and Rain Checks
Kroger says many digital coupon offers can only be loaded one time per household.
Plan on one load per household, not one per person.
An expired coupon moves to the Expired Coupons section of the My Coupons page, so check dates before you build your list.
Rain checks work differently, since they're available at your manager's discretion.
8. Fuel Points With a Deadline
Kroger Fuel Points expire at the end of the month after you earn them.
Points you earn in October are gone at the end of November.
Redeeming them has limits too.
Kroger's points FAQ says you can save up to $1 per gallon on up to 35 gallons of fuel per transaction.
Maximum fuel discount and gallon limits may vary by location.
On groceries, the daily limit is 1,000 Points ($10).
9. Freshness Guarantee Exclusions
Kroger's Freshness Guarantee promises a replacement or refund if you don't love an item, but the page lists what it won't refund.
Alcohol, gift cards, taxes and fees are non-refundable, and online EBT refunds aren't available at this time.
The guarantee covers freshness problems, plus Kroger Brand, Simple Truth and Private Selection products that don't meet your expectations.
Once your refund is confirmed, it will take 5-7 business days to reach your payment method.
For an immediate replacement, bring the item back to your store.
10. Recall Checks
Kroger's deli pasta salads and Homestyle croutons both appeared in recall notices that listed Ohio, one in October 2025 and one in May 2026.
The 2025 notice covered Basil Pesto Bowtie Salad and Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad, over possible Listeria monocytogenes in the pasta ingredient.
Kroger told customers to return the salads for a full refund or replacement.
Check your fridge.
In May 2026, Sugar Foods LLC recalled Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons in 17 states, Ohio included, over possible salmonella in the seasoning's milk powder.
AARP reports the guidance is to discard the croutons or return them to the store where you bought them.
