11 Precautions Michiganders Should Take When Shopping at Meijer

Your mPerks points can feel like free money.

That’s also why scammers go after them.

Gift cards, coupons and online orders come with their own dangers too.

Here are some smart precautions Michiganders should take at Meijer, many of which apply at all stores.

Note: This is general information, not legal or medical advice. Laws, recalls and pharmacy programs are subject to change.

1. Checking Your Receipt

If a scanner at Meijer charges you more than the shelf price, Michigan’s Scanner Law gives you 30 days to say so.

You can report it in person or in writing.

Within two days of your notice, the seller can pay you the difference plus a bonus of ten times that amount, from $1 to $5.

To qualify for the bonus, you need a receipt that shows the overcharge.

So don’t toss it yet.

What the Scanner Law Pays

Your bonus at Meijer comes with a few conditions.

If a clerk corrects the price before the transaction is completed, the bonus doesn’t apply.

If the seller doesn’t pay within two days of your notice, you can sue for actual damages or $250, whichever is greater, plus attorney fees of up to $300.

You can also file in small claims court without an attorney.

2. Checking Shelf Price Displays

When you shop at Meijer, look for each price at the shelf, since the Scanner Law requires a sign, an electronic reader or a price sticker for most items.

Items such as unpackaged foods and live plants are exempt from the display rule.

Complaints about scanner errors or missing price displays can be directed to the Weights & Measures Section of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).

You can call that office at 517-655-8202.

If two prices conflict, the lowest displayed price must be charged.

Point to the lower one.

3. Locking Down Your mPerks Account

If you use the same username and password on your Meijer mPerks account as on any other site, a breach elsewhere can put your points at risk.

So make yours unique.

A January 2024 release from the Michigan Attorney General’s office alleges that a man took logins from a separate data breach and tested them on Meijer’s mPerks accounts.

The buyers he sold them to allegedly spent the points at Meijer, in stores and online.

Meijer’s systems aren’t believed to have been directly breached.

Meijer learned of the thefts through customer complaints in April and May 2023.

Meijer reinstated the full previous balance for customers with verified thefts, at a loss calculated to exceed $1 million.

4. Watching the Pump at Meijer Express

Before you pump at Meijer Express, check that the price display is set to zero, which Michigan officials advised in December 2023 to guard against pump scams.

You can also confirm the roadside sign matches the price on the pump before you fuel.

Both checks take seconds.

Skimmers can be hard to spot because the devices are often placed inside the pump.

MDARD said in 2023 that skimmer checks are part of its routine pump inspections.

Meijer said in June 2025 that Meijer Express customers can link a credit card to mPerks through Quick ID and skip entering a phone number and PIN before pumping.

5. Keeping Your Fuel Receipt

Ask for a slip every time you fill up at Meijer Express.

Consumers should always ask for a receipt as a record of the purchase.

A fuel receipt must accurately reflect the completed transaction.

That includes the product name, the actual price per gallon charged, the total gallons dispensed and the total price charged.

Think of it as proof.

Meijer’s mPerks points can go toward up to $1 off each gallon of gas, the company said in June 2025.

If you use points at the pump, compare the price per gallon on the receipt with what the pump showed.

If you suspect substandard fuel or a short measure, file a complaint online.

The Motor Fuels Quality Hot Line, 800-632-3835, is for reporting suspected adulteration of motor fuels or pump calibrations.

That number is posted on the pumps at every gas station in the state.

6. Ordering WIC Items Online

If you order from Meijer online with Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits, place your pickup or delivery order within your benefit period.

Shop before your last benefit day, too.

So don’t wait.

Meijer was the first retailer in Michigan to accept WIC benefits for online grocery orders.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced the change on July 28, 2026.

WIC clients can choose curbside pickup or home delivery.

Search by WIC eligible, then confirm each item is on your WIC Shopping List.

Proxy cards can’t be used for online WIC orders at this time.

Returns aren’t allowed for WIC items, though exchanges may be allowed if an item is damaged, spoiled, wrong or recalled.

7. Subscribing to Recall Alerts

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists allergy alerts for products sold under Meijer’s name in August 2024, June 2025 and April 2026.

In April 2026, a Grand Rapids company recalled a single lot of Frederik’s by Meijer trail mix over possible undeclared wheat and soy.

The notice listed a lot number and an expiration date to match against the bag.

Small print matters.

That recall has been completed and terminated.

Not every recall gets a press release or a spot on its list.

You can sign up to receive recall and safety alerts.

If someone in your home has a food allergy, that sign-up may be worth a minute.

8. Inspecting Gift Cards

Michigan’s attorney general charged two men in March 2025 over an alleged scheme to slip altered gift cards back into stock at Meijer stores around metro Detroit.

The office alleges the cards were opened to copy their redemption numbers, then covered again so they looked untouched.

Computer programs then allegedly watched for activated cards, leaving a gift card empty by the time its recipient redeemed it.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says to inspect a gift card before you buy it.

Check that the protective stickers are in place and that the PIN on the back isn’t showing.

It takes a minute.

If a card looks tampered with, pick a different one and show the tampered card to a cashier or manager.

Take a photo of the card and your receipt with your phone, since the number helps you report a lost card or fraud.

9. Asking for a Rain Check

If you find an empty shelf at Meijer, ask what your options are.

Meijer told Cleveland’s News 5 in May 2026 that it offers rain checks for advertised merchandise, redeemable at any store location but not online.

A federal rule on retail food stores generally requires advertised products to be in stock during the ad period.

The rule has an exception when an ad clearly says supplies are limited or the products are sold only at some outlets.

It isn’t a violation if the store ordered enough in time to meet reasonably expected demand.

Nor is it a violation if the store offers a rain check, a similar product at the advertised price or a comparable discount, or other compensation of equal value.

Ask before you leave.

10. Checking Wegovy and Ozempic Savings

If you’re eyeing Wegovy or Ozempic at Meijer, confirm the details first.

Meijer announced in February 2026 that it would make Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) more affordable by accepting NovoCare savings programs.

People with government-funded insurance aren’t eligible for that discount.

Meijer pharmacists are available to answer any questions about eligibility and redemption.

Just ask.

FDA warns that unapproved versions of semaglutide skip its review for safety, effectiveness and quality.

Fill your prescription at a state-licensed pharmacy instead.

Meijer’s history timeline says Hendrik Meijer bought how much merchandise on credit before opening his Greenville grocery in 1934?

11. Reading the Delivery Fee

Meijer tripled its home delivery range in December 2024, stretching it from about a 20-minute radius around its stores to 60 minutes.

You can check whether your address is in a delivery area through the Meijer app or on Meijer.com.

Customers in the extended zone would see an extended range delivery fee once a promotion expired, but the December 2024 announcement didn't name an amount.

Check before you order.

If you live past the old 20-minute radius, read the fee on your order before you confirm it.

Customers using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits could keep getting free home delivery in the extended zone.
