12 Things Floridians Are Fiercely Loyal to That People in Other States Have Never Heard Of

Florida’s got its obvious stuff: Disney World, Key West, Publix, and Cuban sandwiches. That’s the surface.

The real Florida shows up in ways that most out-of-staters have never heard of.

Every Floridian has a few of these in their pantry, on their calendar, or in their weekly rotation without even thinking about it.

Meanwhile, their cousin in Illinois has no idea what any of this means.

Datil Peppers

Datil peppers grow almost exclusively in St. Augustine, Florida, and Floridians treat them like a statewide treasure.

The pepper has a sweet-hot flavor that doesn’t taste like any other hot pepper on the market.

Locals use it in sauces, relishes, and pickled versions that show up at every community barbecue in Northeast Florida.

People in other states have genuinely never heard of them. Florida loves them anyway.

Café Bustelo Coladas

A colada is a small cup of sweet, strong Cuban coffee meant to be shared.

Floridians, especially in South Florida, treat the 3 p.m. colada run like a sacred… let’s just say, as a beloved daily tradition.

Most of the country has no idea what a colada is, much less how to pour it into the tiny little cups that come stacked on top of the thermos.

Outside Miami, Tampa, and Orlando, good luck finding one.

The Miami Dolphins No Matter What

Miami Dolphins loyalty runs deep, even during losing seasons. Especially during losing seasons.

Floridians who grew up watching Dan Marino in the 80s and 90s still wear their Dolphins gear like it’s 1984.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their own fan bases, but the Dolphins have the oldest statewide following.

People in other states don’t get the emotional attachment. Floridians do.

Zephyrhills Water

Zephyrhills is a Florida-based bottled water brand (now owned by BlueTriton Brands) that’s been a staple in Florida households for decades.

The plant in Zephyrhills taps local spring water, and the brand is basically the default bottled water in the state.

Visitors from other states grab Aquafina or Dasani out of habit.

Floridians grab Zephyrhills without thinking about it.

Publix BOGOs on Specific Brands

Publix BOGO deals are a statewide tradition, and Floridians have favorite combos they wait for every year.

Wickles Pickles. Duke’s Mayo. Pub Sub Wednesdays (when they’re running).

There’s a whole Facebook ecosystem of Floridians who alert each other when certain BOGOs drop.

Other states don’t have this level of engagement with their grocery store deals.

Fresh Florida Orange Juice From a Roadside Stand

Store-bought OJ is fine. But fresh squeezed from a roadside stand in Indian River County or Lake Wales?

Different universe.

Floridians know which county roads have the best stands.

They buy gallons. They bring coolers. They show up the day the oranges come off the trees.

Out-of-staters assume all orange juice is basically the same. They find out fast that it isn’t.

Swamp Cabbage

Swamp cabbage is the heart of a cabbage palm, which happens to be Florida’s state tree.

It’s a traditional Florida dish, especially in rural Central and North Florida, and there’s even a Swamp Cabbage Festival in LaBelle every February.

Outside Florida, nobody’s eating this.

Inside Florida, generations of families have it on the table alongside fried catfish and hush puppies.

Gatorade at University of Florida Games

Gatorade was invented at the University of Florida in 1965 for the Gators football team, and Floridians (especially UF alumni) take that history seriously.

A Gator fan will remind you of this fact within the first five minutes of meeting them.

People in other states drink Gatorade without thinking about where it came from.

Florida knows exactly where it came from, and the pride is real.

The Florida State Fair

The Florida State Fair in Tampa runs every February, and Floridians treat it like a family tradition going back generations.

Strawberry shortcake from the Plant City vendors. Livestock competitions. The Midway rides that feel like childhood.

People in other states have heard of the Minnesota State Fair or the Texas State Fair.

The Florida State Fair flies mostly under the national radar while locals plan their whole February around it.

Yuengling (As a Florida Transplant)

Yuengling is technically Pennsylvania’s beer, but Yuengling built a major brewery in Tampa in 1999, and Floridians adopted it as their own.

Florida is now one of Yuengling’s biggest markets.

Locals order it at pretty much every bar in the state without thinking twice.

People in states west of the Mississippi often haven’t heard of Yuengling at all. Floridians treat it like a hometown beer.

Cuban Coffee Breaks at Work

In Miami, Tampa, and anywhere with a strong Cuban population, the mid-morning and mid-afternoon Cuban coffee break is a full-on workplace ritual.

Someone on the team walks down to the ventanita (the walk-up coffee window).

They come back with a stack of tiny cups and a thermos of colada for the whole office.

Try explaining this to someone at a tech company in Seattle. They’ll be confused about the entire concept.

The 4:30 Early Bird Dinner

Early bird dinner culture is alive and well across Florida, and it’s not just a retiree stereotype.

Locals across age groups have accepted that the best happy hour deals, the shortest wait times, and the emptiest restaurants come between 4 and 5 p.m.

Chains like Carrabba’s, Outback, and local seafood spots all have their loyal 4:30 crowd.

Try telling someone in Chicago you had dinner at 4:30, and they’ll assume you’re sick. Tell a Floridian, and they’ll ask which restaurant.
