15 Sheetz Etiquette Fails West Virginians Make All the Time

Sheetz has a loyal following for a reason. The food is fast, the stores are bright, and the touchscreen ordering makes things easy.

But even the best gas station hangout can go downhill when West Virginians forget basic manners.

Cutting Ahead at the Touchscreen Kiosks

Sheetz runs on a first-come, first-served system when it comes to ordering food. The touchscreen kiosks make it easy to customize your meal, but there’s often a line.

When someone walks in and jumps right to the screen the moment they see someone walk away, it rubs people the wrong way.

There’s no velvet rope or numbered tickets. But regulars know how it works.

It only takes a second to glance around and wait your turn like everyone else.

Hovering at the Pickup Counter

After placing an order at Sheetz, customers are supposed to wait near the pickup area. But some folks crowd the counter, constantly asking staff for updates or reaching toward food that isn’t theirs.

It stresses out the workers and creates a bottleneck for everyone else.

The system is simple: order, wait, and listen for your name or number. Hovering doesn’t make food come out faster.

It just slows things down and clogs up the space for the next customer.

Making a Mess at the Coffee Station

The self-serve coffee bar at Sheetz is a convenience… until someone turns it into a disaster zone.

Spilled sugar, used stirrers, torn creamer tops, and stray napkins are often left behind. It’s not the employees making the mess.

It only takes a moment to clean up your spot, but too many people walk away without a second thought.

That leaves the next customer to deal with a sticky counter or hunt down supplies that ran out. A little cleanup helps everyone.

Blasting Music or Taking Calls on Speaker

It’s not uncommon to hear someone walk into Sheetz with their phone on full volume, either playing music or chatting on speaker.

The store already has background noise from fryers, order screens, and general hustle. Adding loud phone chatter to the mix doesn’t help.

Not everyone wants to hear your playlist or conversation while they’re grabbing a snack or waiting for their order.

Earbuds or a quick text work just as well and don’t bother anyone else.

Taking Forever at the Kiosk With a Long Line Behind You

The touchscreen menu is part of the fun at Sheetz. You can build the perfect sandwich, burrito, or snack your way.

But when the store is busy, lingering at the screen while trying to decide between every possible sauce combo starts to wear on everyone’s patience.

There’s nothing wrong with customizing your order, but if you’re scrolling through every page like it’s a dinner menu, it might be time to step aside and let someone else go first.

Being mindful of the line keeps things moving and shows respect for the people waiting behind you.

Letting Kids Run Around Unsupervised

Sheetz is designed for convenience, not chaos. But some adults treat it like a playground, letting kids dart through aisles, crowd the kiosk area, or hover near the pickup counter.

It’s not just distracting; it can be unsafe, especially when hot food or drinks are involved.

Staff are focused on making orders and keeping things clean. They can’t be responsible for keeping an eye on someone’s children.

If you’re shopping with kids, helping them stay close and calm makes the visit smoother for everyone.

Ignoring the Clearly Marked Trash Cans

Every Sheetz location has trash cans right where they need to be. Near the doors. By the kiosks. Next to the coffee bar.

And yet, empty cups, wrappers, and crumpled receipts still end up on tables or left behind on counters.

It’s not a huge effort to toss something in the bin. But when customers skip that step, it creates more work for the staff and makes the store look messy fast.

Sheetz does its part to keep things clean, and it works best when the customers help out, too.

Parking Wherever You Feel Like It

Most Sheetz locations are busy throughout the day, especially during lunch hours and late nights. That’s why clearly marked parking spaces exist.

But some drivers still pull up to the front doors, idle in fire lanes, or block in other vehicles while they “run in real quick.”

It creates traffic jams in the lot and slows down everyone else trying to park or leave.

A few extra steps from a proper space won’t ruin your snack run, but parking like you own the place just might ruin someone else’s.

Leaving the Bathroom a Mess

Sheetz restrooms are known for being cleaner than the average gas station. But even the best setup can’t keep up if people don’t do their part.

Paper towels on the floor, sinks left running, and unflushed toilets are all problems staff shouldn’t have to deal with constantly.

Most locations have signs asking customers to help keep the space clean. It’s not about perfection; it’s about basic respect.

The restroom experience should be decent for the next person, not something they have to tiptoe through.

Camping Out at a Table With No Food

Some Sheetz locations have small dine-in areas with booths or high-top tables. They’re meant for people grabbing a quick bite, not a place to hang out for hours without ordering anything.

Still, some folks treat them like personal workspaces or social clubs.

When space is limited, it’s frustrating for paying customers to have nowhere to sit because someone is scrolling on their phone with no food in sight. It’s a convenience store, not a coffee shop.

Be fair with your seat and mindful of the flow.

Standing Right in Front of the Drink Coolers

Sheetz coolers are packed with options. But sometimes people stand in front of them forever, staring blankly at the bottles or holding the door open while they scroll on their phones.

Others block the entire area while chatting or waiting for their order. When the store is busy, that space gets crowded fast.

If you’re not ready to grab something, it helps to step back and let others through.

Holding up the flow over a sports drink doesn’t make a good impression.

Letting Food Orders Sit Too Long

The order’s ready. The name is called. The food is bagged and waiting. But now and then, customers disappear between placing their order and picking it up, leaving hot food to cool on the counter.

It might not seem like a big deal, but it slows things down and clutters the pickup area.

Staff may even need to remake orders if they sit too long.

If you’re not ready to wait, it’s better to order when you are.

Trying to Skip the Line for Lotto or Drinks

Sheetz checkout lines can get long, especially near the coffee station or beer cooler.

Some customers try to sneak up to the register just to buy a lottery ticket or a single drink, acting like their quick purchase makes them an exception.

It’s not a good look. Everyone’s time matters.

Cutting the line, no matter how small the purchase, frustrates the people who’ve been waiting politely.

Opening Items Before Paying

Grabbing a drink and cracking it open before you pay might feel harmless.

But at Sheetz, where things move fast, it can create confusion for the cashier and slow down the line.

It’s especially frustrating when someone eats half a snack or finishes a drink and then tosses the empty package on the counter like it’s normal.

Most customers are respectful, but this habit still pops up more often than it should.

Treating Staff Like They’re Invisible

Sheetz employees juggle a lot. They take orders, restock shelves, clean tables, and manage a steady stream of customers.

Most people are friendly, but some barely look up, skip basic greetings, or get snappy when things aren’t instant.

It doesn’t take much to show basic respect. A quick thank you or eye contact can go a long way.

The job isn’t always easy, and being rude only makes it harder for everyone working behind the counter.

  1. I’m sorry, but to say this is something only West Virginians do is wrong. We travel to other states and usually go to sheetz when possible. Everyone does it everywhere. And maybe you should check the license plates of the people who are doing this in WV. I will bet a few or more are out of state.
