Hy-Vee holds a Senior Citizen Discount Day at stores across Nebraska.
It works like a coupon that never runs out.
Shoppers 55 and older get 5% off a qualifying order every week, with nothing more than a Hy-Vee PERKS card (the store’s free rewards card) at checkout.
There’s no sign-up sheet.
Any customer service counter can print a free PERKS card on the spot.
That card is what triggers the discount at the register.
At Omaha’s Hy-Vee on 156th and Maple, that discount lands every Thursday.
The discount skips pharmacy purchases, lottery tickets, tobacco, gift cards, and wine and spirits, so it’s built for the regular grocery run.
2. Skip the Appointment, Earn Fuel Credit
Hy-Vee pharmacies across Nebraska carry a high-dose flu vaccine, the version the CDC and its vaccine advisers now prefer for adults 65 and older.
Older immune systems respond weaker to the standard shot.
Medicare and many other insurance plans cover it at no charge.
Hy-Vee bills the claim directly.
No card, no bill.
Walk in during flu season and skip the appointment entirely.
That same visit earns Fuel Saver credit toward gas, stacked on top of whatever Medicare already covered.

Hy-Vee pharmacists sit down with any Part D member for a free medication review and drug-plan comparison at nearly 275 Hy-Vee pharmacies, Nebraska’s included.
The review costs nothing.
There’s no obligation to switch.

The card works down to the item.
A shopper swipes it on produce, groceries flagged as healthy, over-the-counter medicine, and even Hy-Vee’s dietitian counseling.
The system only lets the dollars land on what the plan covers.
There’s nothing extra to sign up for in the store, since the benefit rides on a card a shopper’s own plan already mailed them.
Insulin and Shingles Costs Are Set by Law, Not by Hy-Vee
Hy-Vee pharmacies in Nebraska can’t charge a Medicare Part D member more than $35 for a month’s supply of insulin.
That price is federal law at every pharmacy in the country, Hy-Vee included.
No deductible applies first.
The Shingrix shingles vaccine costs the same member nothing at the same pharmacy counter, no copay and no deductible, under that same Medicare Part D rule.
Same price, any counter.
Still, a shopper who fills prescriptions at Hy-Vee gets both savings automatically, without asking for a special code or a manager’s approval.
The $35 Cap Still Applies With Extra Help
Hy-Vee shoppers sometimes assume Extra Help, the federal program that lowers Medicare drug costs for people on a limited income, already covers insulin at a different price.
It doesn’t change the number.
Medicare.gov states plainly that the $35 cap applies to everyone who takes insulin, even someone enrolled in Extra Help.
The two programs stack instead of overlapping, so an Extra Help member still pays no more than $35 a month at the counter.
Nebraska’s Biggest Hy-Vee Store
Hy-Vee opened its first Nebraska store in Norfolk back in 1977.
The chain has been building bigger ever since.

That store spans nearly 135,000 square feet, carries roughly 120,000 items, and houses a food hall with several restaurants under one roof.

It opened just south of Omaha in 2023.

More Hy-Vee Perks Worth Stacking
Hy-Vee’s Fuel Saver + Perks program isn’t limited to the pumps at its own stores.
A Nebraska shopper can redeem the cents they’ve earned at Casey’s or Shell locations too, swiping the same PERKS card before paying at the pump.
Every gallon counts twice.
Getting a flu shot feeds the same account.
Hy-Vee credits a shopper’s Fuel Saver balance 20 cents a gallon for getting the vaccine, stacked on top of whatever Medicare already covered.
Delivery adds another layer.
Hy-Vee’s paid PERKS Plus membership costs $12.95 a month, or $99 a year.
It waives the usual per-order charges instead of billing them one at a time.
That covers unlimited free deliveries, plus free two-hour pickups that normally run $9.95 each.
Not Every Store Runs It the Same Day
Hy-Vee doesn’t run Senior Citizen Discount Day on one company-wide schedule.
Check before you assume.
Each store sets its own day and posts it separately, which is why the Omaha store on 156th and Maple lists Thursday while a store across town could easily post a different day.
