5 Food Lion MVP Perks Virginians Over 60 Leave Unclaimed Every Week

Food Lion’s MVP loyalty program crossed a million monthly active shoppers in 2025, and the company only counts customers who show up and turn on their savings that same month.

Many Virginia MVP cardholders never make that list.

These are the Food Lion MVP perks many Virginians over 60 leave sitting untouched, week after week.

1. Shop & Earn’s Monthly Reset

Food Lion refreshes its Shop & Earn offers on the first of every month, and none of that money counts until a shopper turns it on.

A shopper has to switch it on.

In 2025, the program crossed a million monthly active shoppers, and Food Lion counts that milestone only among customers who activate their offers each month, per an interview its head of loyalty marketing gave the trade outlet Grocery Dive.

Many Virginia shoppers make that same Food Lion trip every week, whether or not this month’s offers are switched on.

A shopper who never opens Shop & Earn misses that reset on every one of those weekly trips, not just once a month.

Nationally, Social Security provides the majority of income for 65% of Americans 65 and older, according to the Social Security Administration, which leaves little room to shrug off a discount sitting unused.

Rewards a shopper does earn don’t sit forever, either.

Food Lion’s own program rules give shoppers until the end of the next month to redeem an earned reward before it disappears.

Then it’s gone.

2. MVP’s Weekly Digital Coupons

Every week, Food Lion adds a fresh batch of digital coupons to the MVP savings hub, according to the company’s head of loyalty marketing.

Nothing prints automatically.

A shopper has to open the app or foodlion.com, scroll the coupon gallery, and tap “load to card” before checkout for the discount to count.

Skip that step, and the same item rings up at full shelf price.

Every single time.

The savings hub works the same way on a laptop or a library computer as it does on a phone, so a Virginia shopper who’d rather type than swipe doesn’t need the app at all.

3. Food Lion’s Free MVP Card That Skips the App

Food Lion issues every MVP member a free physical card at the customer service counter, and it works at checkout without an app, a smartphone, or an online account tied to it.

It’s just a card.

Nationally, 78% of adults 65 and older own a smartphone, according to Pew Research Center, which means roughly one in five don’t have one to load a grocery app onto in the first place.

Food Lion’s weekly ad swaps in a new run of MVP-exclusive prices each week, and those lower prices only ring up once the register reads an MVP card or app barcode.

A shopper who leaves the card at home and never installed the app pays the same shelf price as someone who’s never signed up for MVP at all.

That weekly ad is also where Food Lion’s “X for $X” tags show up, the kind stacked under canned goods or cereal boxes.

The Math on Food Lion’s “X for $X” Tags

Food Lion often prices MVP sale items in bundles, like a tag reading “5 for $5” under a stack of canned soup.

That price is per item, not a bundle requirement.

One can rings up at $1, the same per-can price as a shopper who buys all five.

Only a tag that prints a “must buy” quantity or a stated limit next to the price makes that quantity a requirement.

4. Food Lion’s In-Store Savings Center Kiosk

Inside its stores, Food Lion runs a Savings Center kiosk near the entrance where a shopper types in the phone number tied to their MVP account and pulls up personalized coupons on the spot.

No app required.

Food Lion’s head of loyalty marketing told Grocery Dive that those in-store offers load directly onto a shopper’s MVP account and apply automatically at checkout, the same as coupons clipped through the app.

That matters for a Virginia shopper who never downloaded the Food Lion app or would rather not shop from a phone screen at all because the kiosk hands over the same personalized savings without one.

Just a phone number.

Those kiosk offers are built off a shopper’s own buying history, not a blanket coupon every customer in line sees.

5. MVP Pricing on Food Lion To Go

Food Lion applies MVP pricing and Shop & Earn rewards to a To Go pickup or delivery order only when a shopper’s MVP number is attached to that online account.

A shopper adds it manually.

A shopper who sets up a Food Lion To Go account without entering their MVP number pays the regular shelf price on every online order, the same as someone who never joined MVP at all.

Entering the MVP card number into that online account just once ties it to every pickup and delivery order after that.

Food Lion’s own announcement of its summer MVP Savings Spectacular said members could shop the deals in stores or through Food Lion To Go pickup and home delivery, with the discount applying once a shopper’s personal MVP number is on the order.

A Virginia shopper who orders online because of a bad hip or a long drive to the nearest store still earns every MVP discount and Shop & Earn reward a shopper pushing a cart through the aisles gets, as long as that MVP number made it onto the account first.

Skip that one step, and the online order misses every discount the in-store trip would have earned.

Food Lion Keeps Refining the MVP App

Food Lion has been remodeling stores and expanding its MVP program at the same time, and Grocery Dive credits both moves for a striking streak: 53 consecutive quarters of comparable-store sales growth for Food Lion itself, not just its parent company Ahold Delhaize, as of early 2026.

Not a coincidence.

Food Lion runs 277 stores across Virginia, more of them in Virginia Beach than in any other city in the state, according to the company’s own store locator.

Grocery Dive singled out the MVP loyalty program’s personalized offers as a driver behind that streak, not just the lower prices printed in the weekly ad.

Food Lion’s head of loyalty marketing says the company’s 2026 plan leans on making the MVP program more intuitive and connected, not on piling on new features.

He also says Food Lion tracks engagement and retention closely because those numbers show whether the program keeps delivering value or starts to fade.

Neil Norman, Food Lion’s head of loyalty marketing, told Grocery Dive the company reviews engagement data to catch which MVP numbers have stopped showing activity.

Food Lion’s loyalty team watches whether a shopper’s MVP number shows activity month after month, and that ongoing activity is what decides whether the personalized offers keep getting sharper.
