6 Precautions Texans Should Take When Shopping at H-E-B
H-E-B is such a familiar stop for Texans that it’s easy to shop on autopilot.
But a few smart habits can protect your wallet and your family, and some of them start before you reach the store.
Here’s how Texans can shop H-E-B with fewer surprises.
Note: This is general information, not financial advice. Store policies, fees and recall lists are subject to change.
1. Facebook Gift Card Scams
H-E-B warned customers in December 2025 about a Facebook Messenger scam promising large gift cards or shopping sprees in exchange for personal information.
H-E-B said it had no giveaways running on Facebook at the time.
Any giveaway would be promoted on the company’s official social media channels, its website or the My H-E-B app.
If a message says you’ve won H-E-B money, open your My H-E-B app instead of tapping the link.
Double-check that a domain or social media account is official.
Links that look suspicious on Facebook should be reported within Facebook.
2. Recall Notices
H-E-B lists its recalls on a newsroom page, and the ground pork notice from April 13, 2026 shows what to look for.
H-E-B recalled fresh ground pork and mild Italian pork sausage at Texas stores over possible foreign material.
Ground pork carried a sell-by date of March 31, and mild Italian pork sausage carried April 3.
Anyone who bought either product was told not to eat it.
If you still have either product, dispose of it or return it to the store for a full refund.
Check the sell-by date on any fresh pork in your fridge against a notice like this before you cook it.
Reaching H-E-B About a Recall
H-E-B’s April 2026 pork recall notice gave you a toll-free number for questions: 855-432-4438.
The line runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central, Monday through Friday.
You can click Product Recalls at the bottom of heb.com.
The recall covered four banners: H-E-B, Central Market, Joe V’s Smart Shop and Mi Tienda.
3. Allergy Alerts
H-E-B’s recalls page carries allergy alerts as well as recalls.
A December 10, 2025 notice covers 16-ounce Meal Simple Red Lentil Dal Soup.
Containers labeled as that soup held a poultry and rice soup, and Meal Simple Turkey & Wild Rice Soup contains milk the label didn’t declare.
A December 19, 2025 notice covers 5.3-ounce cups of Higher Harvest by H-E-B Dairy-Free Coconut Yogurt, Strawberry flavor, that may contain undeclared almond.
If you shop for someone with a milk or almond allergy, return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.
4. Receipts and Refund Deadlines
H-E-B’s refund policy, a document posted on its website, says to save your receipt.
With a receipt, H-E-B will exchange or refund most items dated within 90 days of purchase.
If your receipt is gone, bring a valid government-issued ID, which is required for all non-receipted returns.
Even then, the refund will be extended in the form of an H-E-B gift card.
If you paid electronically, in most cases H-E-B can locate your purchase and process the return as a receipted refund.
For most items bought on heb.com or the My H-E-B app, refunds should be requested within 14 days of pickup or delivery.
That’s far shorter than the 90 days allowed for store returns with a receipt.
There’s a separate rule for alcohol bought on heb.com, which can’t be refunded online or over the phone.
Under that alcohol rule, the product must be returned to the store it was purchased from within 90 days of purchase.
The policy says prescription medications may not be returned for exchange or refund, and it lists gift cards, phone cards and clearance items as no-refund.
5. Missed Pickup and Delivery Windows
What happens if you aren’t home when your H-E-B delivery arrives?
H-E-B’s delivery help page says your items will be left at the front door.
H-E-B isn’t liable for items after they’ve been delivered.
For curbside pickup, H-E-B’s help page says the store isn’t able to hold orders overnight without notice.
If you’re running late, swing by your store as close to your pickup time as possible.
Psst! How ready are you for your next H-E-B online order? Run through this checklist and see where you stand.
6. SNAP Payments on Online Orders
H-E-B takes Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on curbside and delivery orders, paid by electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, according to its help page.
A separate help page says U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines require an additional 10% charge on the estimated price of weighed items such as vegetables and meat.
If the final price comes in lower, the difference is refunded to your SNAP EBT card at pickup or delivery.
Factor that extra 10% into your balance when you add weighed items to your cart.
SNAP EBT can’t cover curbside, delivery and personal shopper fees, so you need a second payment method for those.
August 2026 Jalapeño Notices
H-E-B’s recalls page lists two August 2026 notices about jalapeños and possible salmonella contamination.
The public health alert from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), dated August 8, covers various meat and poultry products containing the jalapeños.
The recall, dated August 14, came from Naturebest Precut & Produce.
If you open the page, you’ll find the alert and the recall listed as separate entries.
According to San Antonio station KSAT, the alert included H-E-B’s 11-ounce Meal Simple Pork Carnitas Bowl.
