6 Texas Small Towns That Empty Out on Friday Nights

Every Friday night of football season, Marfa’s Martin Field fills up the way NPR’s cameras caught it doing last September.

Fans have kept packing those bleachers generation after generation, no matter how much the town around them changes.

Other small Texas towns do the same.

These are the small Texas towns that empty out on Friday nights once the stadium lights come on.

1. Refugio

Refugio’s Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium holds close to 7,000 fans on Friday nights.

The 2020 Census counted just over 2,700 people in the whole town.

The stadium alone seats more than double that.

A 2017 Newsweek report found the stands close to full nearly every Friday, calling each Bobcats kickoff the town’s biggest gathering of the week.

That routine meant even more in September 2017, when Hurricane Harvey tore roofs off homes and knocked down the stadium scoreboard just weeks before the season opener.

Coach Jason Herring got his team back on the practice field anyway, telling them a Friday kickoff would give the town something normal to hold onto.

Kickoff came on schedule.

2. Mart

Mart’s small-town Panthers have won eight state football championships, tied for the fifth-most in Texas history, trailing only Aledo’s eleven and a three-way tie at nine.

Just under 1,750 people lived in Mart at the 2020 Census.

Panthers Booster Club member Jeff Pechacek told Waco TV station KXXV in 2020 that fans arrive early to Mart games, home or away.

The atmosphere is electric enough to pull everybody in, he said.

City council member John Garrett gave a similar account in that same 2020 interview.

He said football matters in Mart because Friday nights let neighbors watch kids they know, sometimes their sons and daughters, play in the purple and gold.

Fans’ devotion emptied downtown Mart on Dec. 14, 2023, when the Panthers played Albany for the Class 2A Division II title 117 miles north in Arlington.

A KXXV crew found the town’s streets and café tables empty that day, with Panther flags still flying over bare sidewalks.

Café co-owner John Ramirez told the crew everybody was at AT&T Stadium instead.

Trolley’s bartender Cierra Brown and Victorian’s Barbecue owner Joey Victorian stayed open anyway, in case anyone who couldn’t make the drive wanted lunch and a place to watch.

Not every table stayed empty.

3. Booker

The town of Booker sits so close to the Oklahoma state line that the football coach says he can see it from his kitchen window.

Just 1,437 people called Booker home at the 2020 Census.

Nine streets make up the heart of town, and a sign on the highway leading into Booker jokes that it’s the “Next 9 Exits.”

Booker’s Kiowas sometimes drive hours across the open Panhandle just to reach an away game.

A 2014 Texas Monthly report found many Booker residents made that same drive, with the closest game that season more than an hour away.

The devotion runs deeper than one season.

Quarterback Hunter Lile and his cousin, receiver Jared Reagan, were nearly inseparable growing up and combined to set the state records for career passing and receiving yards.

Texas Monthly reported the two families were about to become literal neighbors too, once a house under construction for the Liles was finished.

If the Kiowas ever reached the state final, AT&T Stadium in Arlington could seat Booker’s entire population fifty times over.

The Kiowas play big.

Which Texas school district built an 18,000-seat, roughly $60 million football stadium, more people than several of the towns in this article combined?

4. Marfa

Marfa switched from standard 11-man football to six-man football in 2012, once the town's high school enrollment dropped too low to keep fielding a full roster.

Marfa's population stood at 1,788 people at the 2020 Census.

NPR visited Martin Field this past season and found the stands filling up the way they do every Friday night of the fall.

Interim superintendent Arturo Alferez watches from the stands with his grandson, and says the tradition pulls the community back together no matter how much the town changes around it.

A senior named Garry Webb transferred in from a neighboring district with only 28 students in its entire pre-K through 12th grade enrollment.

For him, Friday night under the lights feels like the world is watching, though he's careful to note it's Marfa's world, not the whole planet's.

Locals keep showing up anyway.

Why Six-Man Football Exists

Texas lets any high school with fewer than 105 students opt into six-man football instead of the standard 11-man game.

Marfa and Gordon both play six-man under that option, not because Texas forces them to.

A small school can still field a standard team if it has enough players, the way Gordon did for two games in 2025.

A roster with only seven or eight players still takes the field most weeks for Texas's six-man teams, injuries and all.

Coaches call it a small miracle when a season ends with enough healthy players left to finish it.

5. Iraan

Iraan has almost no crowds at all, per the Houston Chronicle, except for Braves football on fall Friday nights and the barbecue special every Thursday at noon.

The 2020 Census counted 1,055 people living in Iraan.

The town got its start after an oil discovery on the Yates Ranch in 1926, and its name comes from ranch owners Ira and Ann Yates.

Oil money built the town fast, then a series of busts shrank it almost as fast.

What's left still turns out every Friday from August through November.

As of a 2018 Houston Chronicle report, Nancy Beck had run the town's barbecue spot for nineteen years.

She says Iraan is the kind of place where a traveler who breaks down on the highway ends up staying for good.

Football night is different.

6. Gordon

Gordon has just 470 residents, the smallest town on this list, according to the 2020 Census.

A tornado rated EF-1, with winds near 105 mph, tore through Gordon on May 18, 2025.

The storm destroyed the Longhorns' football field, track, weight room, and bleachers in a single evening.

Coach and athletic director Mike Reed had no home field left to rebuild in time for kickoff.

Gordon played nearly its entire 2025 season on the road because of it.

The Longhorns managed just one home game all season, at a newly built stadium in November, timed to homecoming and senior night.

That resilience carried into the playoffs.

Gordon beat Rankin 69-22 on Dec. 17, 2025, at AT&T Stadium for a third straight Class 1A Division I six-man state title.

The win stretched Gordon's winning streak to 44 games and made it the program's fifth state championship overall.

One home game was enough.

Away-Game Road Trips

Six-man football districts in far West Texas can span more ground than some entire small states.

Dell City's team, one of the smallest programs in Texas, once drove two and a half hours each way to play Fort Davis without a single substitute on the bench.

Distance doesn't win.

A trip like that empties Dell City's few streets for an entire evening.

Fans who can't make the drive gather at the town's one restaurant instead and wait for updates by phone.

One Texas Panhandle town spent six years and $350,000 restoring a 47-foot cowboy statue that many tourists have never even heard of.

Pulling in visitors had nothing to do with it.

Locals just refused to let the landmark go.
