7 Publix Bakery Orders Floridians Don’t Know They Can Place

A toddler in footie pajamas points at the bakery case at a Fort Myers Publix before their dad’s cart even clears the produce section.

A free cookie changes hands seconds later, part of a giveaway Publix says adds up to about 37.5 million cookies for kids every year.

That’s the obvious order.

Behind that same counter sits many more options. These are the Publix bakery orders Floridians don’t know they can place.

1. Designing a Custom Cake

A blank online form is all it takes to build a custom cake at Publix, choosing the flavor, filling, and icing before a decorator pipes a single line.

The flavor list runs past vanilla and chocolate into marble, carrot, red velvet, and a vanilla-chocolate combo.

Icing is a separate choice, with fudge, cream cheese, and whipped sitting beside the buttercream many shoppers pick out of habit.

That’s not a sheet cake.

Licensed designs turn up on the cake menu, too.

A cake can carry Bluey, Spider-Man, or Disney Princess artwork, with room left over for a personalized message up to 50 characters long.

Submit it, and Publix has it ready the next day.

2. Cookie Cakes Made to Order

Publix’s cookie cake sits in a corner of the bakery order list all by itself, not as a smaller version of anything on the cake menu.

The standard version is a 12-inch round chocolate chip cookie that Publix says serves 10.

It isn’t cake at all.

Decorated versions run by season and occasion, from birthday balloons to a Halloween cauldron to fall florals.

A separate row of message cookies carries a line piped across the middle and serves about eight.

Customizing stays limited on those designs so the artwork survives, and a fully custom request goes straight to the bakery counter at Publix.

3. Building a Dessert Platter

Publix builds its dessert platters in the bakery and takes orders for them online, instead of leaving a shopper to grab whatever sits in the case.

The lineup runs from a sugar and chocolate chip cookie platter to chocolate-covered strawberries, brownie bites, and a cannoli and strawberry tray.

Sizes run from a dozen pieces to a 90-count Decadent Sweets platter.

The medium cookie platter alone serves about 20.

You don’t scan the case.

Fruit, vegetable, sandwich, and meat platters sit on the same order list, so one pickup can cover a whole table.

4. Booking a Wedding Cake

A Publix wedding cake counts as a booking, not an upsized version of the 24-hour online tool.

A couple sets up a free consultation with a catering consultant at least six weeks before the wedding.

Six weeks isn’t long.

That meeting settles flavor, filling, and icing color, and Publix schedules a complimentary tasting to go with it.

A fabric swatch or a ribbon lets the bakery match the icing to the dress.

Publix delivers within 15 miles of a store for an added fee.

Publix’s Bakery Order Clock

Publix runs more than one clock for bakery orders, and mixing them up is how shoppers show up empty-handed.

Cookie cakes, dessert platters, bakery pies, and scratch-made loaves all list pickup as soon as the next day.

Dessert platters carry a caveat: An order placed before noon is ready any time the next day, and an afternoon order waits until after noon the day after.

Publix’s wedding cakes run on a different clock, with the company recommending the order go in four weeks before the date.

Payment on that cake is due at least seven days before pickup or delivery.

5. Reserving a Scratch-Made Loaf

Publix bakes more than a dozen scratch-made bread varieties in store, and its order-ahead list covers them the same way it covers cakes.

Sourdough Round, Italian Five Grain, White Mountain, Chicago Italian, rye, challah, and a braided brioche loaf all show up on it.

Hoping isn’t a strategy.

Reserving a loaf pays off before a holiday or a big dinner, when the bread case empties out fast.

6. Putting a Pie on Hold

Publix takes advance orders on bakery pies, so a pie can be waiting at the counter instead of gone by the time you get there.

It isn’t first-come, first-served.

The lineup goes well past apple.

Sweet potato, buttermilk, pecan, and pumpkin all sit on the order list.

Key lime comes as a full pie or as a mini that serves about three, and a small lemon meringue rounds out the shorter end.

None of it is a Thanksgiving-only menu.

7. Ordering an Ice Cream Cake

Publix files ice cream cakes under the same bakery order list as everything else, and that list is the last place a shopper thinks to check.

The Moose Tracks version is four layers of vanilla cake built around a pint of Publix Rich & Creamy Moose Tracks ice cream and peanut butter European-style cream.

Vanilla whipped icing, a chocolate ganache drip, peanut butter cookies, and maraschino cherries go on top.

That's not a freezer-case cake.

Publix ices every cake by hand in store, chocolate curls and piped rosettes included.

Cookie N' Cream, Chocolate Trinity, and Vanilla Crunch fill out the rest of the row.

All four list pickup as soon as the next day.

A Free Cookie That Doesn't Require an Order

Publix hands a child a free cookie at the bakery counter, no purchase required and no form to fill out first.

Kids can pick chocolate chip, sugar, or sprinkle.

That giveaway paused in March 2020 as the pandemic began, and Publix brought it back by May 2021.

It never left again.

A parent doesn't need a receipt, a purchase, or even a reason, just a kid and a spot at the counter.
