8 Jewel-Osco Systems Employees Wish Illinoisans Understood
Illinois charges 49.6 cents in state tax on every gallon of gas pumped this year, according to the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Jewel-Osco’s loyalty points don’t lower it.
These are the Jewel-Osco systems employees wish Illinoisans understood.
1. One-Coupon Limit
Jewel-Osco’s coupon policy draws a hard line at the register.
One manufacturer coupon per item, every time, with no exceptions for a shopper holding two.
Hand over two coupons for the same box of cereal, and the register applies whichever discount is worth more.
The other coupon goes back in the envelope.
It isn’t a cashier’s call.
Jewel-Osco wrote the limit into policy, and a cashier has no authority to waive it.
The same policy lets a cashier reject a coupon that looks altered, blurry or photocopied, no explanation required.
2. No Doubling on Digital Coupons
Jewel-Osco lets some stores double a paper manufacturer coupon’s value, up to a posted limit, but digital coupons loaded to a forU account never get the same treatment.
Jewel-Osco’s coupon policy spells this out plainly: Any coupon clipped in the app and applied automatically at checkout sits outside every “double coupon” promotion the store runs.
A shopper who assumes an app deal doubles the way a paper one might walks up to a total that’s higher than expected.
The cashier didn’t shortchange anyone.
The app coupon never qualified.
Not every Jewel-Osco store even runs a double coupon promotion in the first place, and the stores that do can change the limit at any time.
3. 30-Day Raincheck Clock
Jewel-Osco issues rainchecks when a sale item runs out before a shopper gets to it.
The slip comes with a countdown few people notice until it’s too late.
A Jewel-Osco raincheck expires 30 days from the date it’s issued and is good for one use only.
It covers up to six items unless the ad says otherwise.
A shopper gets no extension past 30 days, no matter the reason.
Beer, wine, spirits, tobacco, fuel and the fluid items in the dairy case don’t get rainchecks at all under that same policy.
A raincheck can be redeemed at any Albertsons-owned store that has the item in stock, not only the Jewel-Osco where it was issued.
A shopper who tucks the slip in a junk drawer for two months comes back to a piece of paper that scans as nothing.
An expired raincheck gets no exception at the register.
4. Minimum-Purchase Math
Jewel-Osco runs many deals with a catch: Spend $10, get $3 off, that sort of threshold.
The math behind that number doesn’t work the way many shoppers assume.
Jewel-Osco’s coupon policy calculates a purchase threshold after in-store and forU discounts come off, but before subtracting any manufacturer coupon.
The credit still counts.
A shopper can clear a $10 minimum on paper while paying less than $10 in cash. The manufacturer coupon never counts against the threshold.
Several categories don’t count toward that minimum at all.
Beer, wine, spirits, fuel, prescriptions, lottery tickets and fluid dairy items sit outside the math no matter how much a shopper spends on them.
Jewel-Osco’s Threshold Math, Worked Out
Jewel-Osco’s coupon policy spells out an example close to this: A $12 order drops to $10.25 after a $1.75 forU discount.
That $10.25 figure is what counts toward a $10 minimum-purchase deal.
A $1 manufacturer coupon on top of that brings the cash total down to $9.25.
The shopper still qualifies for the deal, even though the receipt shows less than $10 changed hands.
5. Points That Don’t Count
Jewel-Osco’s forU program terms hand out one point for every dollar spent on groceries.
Eligible gift cards earn double that, two points per dollar, which surprises many shoppers stocking up before a holiday.
Not every gift card qualifies: Prepaid Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, Albertsons-banner gift cards and fuel gift cards earn zero points under that same program.
Other purchases earn nothing.
Alcohol, tobacco, fuel, automotive services and the fluid items in the dairy case never add a single point to a forU account.
Money orders, lottery tickets, phone cards and postage stamps miss out too.
Pharmacy purchases earn points as well, but only on the out-of-pocket cost, like a copay, never the part insurance covers.
A shopper who eyeballs a $60 total and expects 60 points can walk away with far fewer, and the receipt rarely explains why.
6. Two-Month Points Clock
Jewel-Osco points don’t sit in an account forever.
The forU program terms set an expiration on every point earned: Two calendar months, counting the month it landed in the account.
Earn 100 points in January, and those points vanish at the end of February if nobody uses them.
Gone.
A shopper who skips a couple of months between Jewel-Osco trips often finds a points balance lower than the receipts would suggest.
A member can check the damage in the “Rewards History” section of the app, which lists points earned, used and lost to expiration side by side.
FreshPass subscribers are the one exception, since their points don’t expire at all.
7. Rewards Toggle
Jewel-Osco lets shoppers turn their points into automatic cash off a purchase instead of redeeming them for individual grocery rewards, but never both at the same time.
Every 100 points converts to $1 off at checkout once a shopper opts in.
Here’s the trade-off nobody reads before flipping the switch: Turning on Auto Cash Off shuts down the Grocery Rewards Gallery.
Free items and tiered basket discounts disappear from the account the moment the toggle flips.
A shopper has to opt back out to see those rewards again.
Switching back means finding that same toggle in the app’s Rewards section and flipping it off.
Jewel-Osco built the two systems to run one at a time, never both together.
Psst! How well do you know Jewel-Osco’s forU program? Flip these cards and see how many you get right.
8. Gas Rewards Gap
Jewel-Osco advertises gas discounts as a forU perk.
Every dollar of that 49.6-cent-a-gallon state gas tax is walled off from the rest of the budget.
The Illinois Constitution has barred lawmakers from spending Motor Fuel Tax money on anything but road and bridge work since voters approved that amendment in 2016.
A driver watching the pump price rise might reach for the forU app expecting some of that money back at checkout.
The forU program terms state plainly that gas rewards aren’t available in the Jewel-Osco market area.
Other Albertsons banners let shoppers turn 100 points into 10 cents off a gallon.
That feature doesn’t apply to a Jewel-Osco shopper filling up in Cook County or anywhere else in Illinois.
A shopper whose forU app still shows points has grocery credit, not gas credit.
Those points still work at the register, just not at the pump.
